Crazy career year

So I've been playing a 6.0e career for around 30 seasons now, and for the last 11, I've been chronicling it in a dynasty thread. I haven't touched my offensive game plan in five seasons or so, and my QB has been putting up good, not great, numbers. However, that all just changed on a shocking level this season.

Literally, I didn't *touch* the game plan on offense this year, and I don't think I've touched it since 2029 when Kirk's development and receivers were far along enough to stretch the field a bit more. We also didn't sign any new receivers. The only thing I can think of here is that my WRs and TE are all relatively young. My TE unmasked 8 points this year, but he didn't have that stellar of a season: 46 catches, 553 yards, 4 TDs. Team summary forthcoming in the next post...

Just wow. Has anyone seen a breakout year quite like this, with no ratings breakout and no game plan changes?

It's hard to tell without seeing your previous years, but it seems to me that it wasn't a stupendous breakout year across the board, just in touchdowns. (As an aside, the fact that you consider throwing for 3600-4200 yards a season with around 30 touchdowns a year only "good" is pretty funny.)

Essentially Kirk threw the ball less than the previous year, threw for only a few more yards than the previous year, his average/catch was lower this year, but he exploded in touchdowns. It looks like to me he's abeen a long thrower the past several years, but what's been holding him back was interceptions. His previous season could have been just as good as this one, but a lot of those long passes went for interceptions and this year he kept most of them on target. (21 last year, 11 this year) This is also borne out by his accuracy numbers, he had a career year in accuracy. Maybe his receivers had butterfingers (even this year they seem to have quite a few drops) but it looks to me like he was already poised to put up huge numbers but accuracy problems and interceptions stood in the way.

Well those 2032 numbers are interesting. I don't know what happened that year, but Kirk threw a ton less that year than any other year (maybe partially explained by injuries?) but other than that it has a lot of similarities to his current breakout. Newhart and Wright clearly show they can score a lot, and their TD totals in the current season are nearly identical to two years ago. Kris Dolinko was obviously involved a lot more this season.

It's an interesting situation. Did you get more rushing touchdowns the past few years (in other words was Kirk so accurate this year that he was throwing them in from the red zone rather than having your RB rush them in from the 2?) That seems like one possible reason. Either way, you can't complain about the excellent year!

Seems awful strange that your RB Dancy wasn't in the receiving statistics. In my careers (all SP and all computer gameplanned) my RB has usually been in the top 5 or 6 receivers. I'd imagine he'd have at least one of the receiving TDs. Did Kirk use a lot of multiple receiver sets that year? What's also impressive is that Kirk had 2 rushing TDs.

Just a thought - was the running game significantly better in this year than in previous years? When trying to run pass-first offences in previous versions of FOF, I often found that having a solid running game really helped to open up the passing game (although never to the extent of a 120+ QB rating...)

The game plan I'm using doesn't throw enough short passes to get the RB into the mix that much. Since 2029 when I opened it up, the most catches any back has had has been 30. In this season, all backs (FB included) got a total of 46 targets.

Gotcha. Pretty good gameplan then.

I don't read the dynasty forums much. Just checked it out though and I don't think I've ever had the MVP, Bowl MVP, OPoY, DPoY, and a rookie of the year. All you needed was to draft/sign an undrafted FA WR and I'm sure you would've had both rookies of the year! Most impressive.
