Should I re enlist?
I am now at the cross roads of my career.
Should I continue with the air force or should I go my own way? |

How close are you to your pension?
What kind of post-military career do you have in mind? |

What is the title to your ASFC?
Do you like the job you are doing? If no, cross training is a possible option. Be sure that your ASVAB scores are high enough for the position you are applying for. If you don't care much for the military lifestyle, this is the good time to separate because you have not invested a lot of time. If you were 8-10 years into your enlistment, you should stay in and get your pension. Overall, you have to do what you think is best for you right now. There is no easy answers that any of us can give you. I know I anguished over reenlisting after my first 4 year commitment, but I think I made the right decision because of my health issues are now taken care of. Good luck with your decision.

Prior air force here and have gone through this as well. As others have asked what are your current prospects for longterm employment outside of the military ? Also, another factor is what is your eduational situation as far as college degrees. I had completed my master's degree before getting out and that made all the difference.

Cross train into my job, Air Traffic Control...
Great career on the outside, close to 6 figures. Or if you reenlist again, you can max out your bonus easily. |

I was a 3COX2 in the Air Force as well and got out after doing my 4 years. Definitely make sure you have your job situation squared aware before you head out, I didn't and I paid for it. 3C0X2 is a computer programmer for those curious, and they at least when I was getting out where really being phased out by the Air Force and contracted out. It is depressing to be doing the same job with civilians working right next to you, but they're making roughly 4-5x what you do.
The one thing I wish I'd have done was stayed in to finish school, as the military experience is great on your resume but a degree is really necessary most places. The 100% tuition if it's still around is pretty nice also, so you can save your GI Bill for Masters or above. I also wish I'd doubled up my GI Bill when given the chance, kids are dumb. That'd sure help about now. |

Got out after almost 10 years (of the Navy). With the way things are going, I wish I had got out 4 years earlier. The pension could never replace the vast amount of joy and happiness I have had in the past 5 months.
Best thing I ever did was leave the service.

Get out. I have less than 8 years left in the Army, so I'm staying in.

Grey, are you stationed at Gunter?
What skills have you learned while you were in? |

Not necessarily. I think it depends on the skills he's gained while in. Grey, I was a 3C0X2 in the AF from 1995-1999, stationed at Gunter. While I was in, I was an Oracle Forms and Reports programmer. Learning Oracle was huge and it has been the #1 reason why I do what I do today. When you can increase your income by 450%, staying in is not an option, IMO. |

If you really like being in the service, do you post a thread like this?

This was my exact thought when I saw this title. I thought about getting out at 4 and at 8 years. I have stayed and have absolutely no regrets. Out of curiosity, you mentioned cross trainning as an option. Why do you want to cross train out of your current AFSC and what AFSC are you looking to cross train into?

I loved being in the AF. To this day I wish I could've stayed in. When you can go from making $18,000 a year to $55,000 a year, you don't stay in regardless of how much you like it. That's crazy. |
