I'm just spit-balling here (another banned thing by MLB), but I have a much higher tolerance for a professional athlete that was using banned substances to rehab a surgery/injury, than I do for a guy using methodically to increase performance and nothing else.
Yes it is banned, yes he should be busted. Yes, I'll be much quicker to forgive/forget about it if it was only for the purpose of overcoming the surgery/injury. |

so...it's okay for me to get drunk and drive if I had a really shitty day? it's okay to steal a co-worker's wallet if the guy's a jerk? (this may have been ruben rivera's defense) etc, etc, etc. getting hurt is part of the game. illegally purchasing growth hormone and/or steroids in order to rehabilitate your injury is not. worse, it artificially raises the bar for any guy trying to come back from that injury WITHOUT buying and using illegal substances: "well, glaus made it back in 3 months, what are you, a pussy? maybe we should just cut the guy..." all the rationalizing about golden boy ankiel (and now glaus, apparently) is embarrassing. if it was bonds he'd continue to burn at the stake, but with the white guys, it's that he was hurt or he was a pitcher or some other nonsense. either they're all okay or they're all jerks, you can't pick and choose. |

This I find somewhat annoying. You apparently skipped the entire part of my statement that you thought had meaning enough to quote where I clearly said he should be punished. You went off on a wild assed tangent about Bonds and white people. Seriously, did you need to quote me or were you just working on something else entirely? |

Its really said when Bonds apologists play this card. Its been argued hundreds of times on this board, but did Ankiel lie to a grand jury? Did Ankiel cheat on his taxes? Has Ankiel been a well documented asshole to fans? Did Ankiel reportedly threaten to kill his mistress? Yeah, Bonds is hated because he's black.... |

Well, taking nothing else from this but one sliver of silver lining, I now have ammunition to take to all the cranky Angels fans who have been endlessly bitching about the Angels letting Glaus go three years ago.

While I completely disagree with the way dime expressed his opinion (especially the race card), I do agree with his basic point.
All baseball players who have been linked to PEDs have not been treated the same. Some have been tarred and feathered. Others have been treated with more sympathy. All committed the same crime. There is a certain amount of rationalization that goes on depending on who it is.

The difference is Bonds is still an active player, broke sports greatest record by cheating, and was a well publicised asshole before anyone even thought about steroids. The fact that he treats the media the way he does doesn't help his cause. Put anyone in the same shoes as bonds and they'd be just as hated by fans. |

Show me the tar and feathering of Gary Sheffield and I'll agree that black players implicated for steroids are treated differently than whites. |

Forget Bonds. I know he is the "perfect storm" Let's eliminate the race issue also since that ALWAYS clouds the issue. Let's choose Jason Grimsley for example. He was an active reliever who got caught getting a shipment of PEDs. He used it to recover from injury. He used it to get back to the majors. He got run out of the league. No questions asked. Guillermo Mota tests positive for PEDs. Not only does he not get run out of the game, he gets signed a multi million dollar contract, then got mostly applause his first day back from his suspension. It seems to me that both players were treated differently for doing the same thing. Logan brought up Gary Sheffield. Same thing. Both he and Giambi has gotten a pass for their PED use when compared to Bonds and Palmeiro. If PED users are public enemy #1, then they should all be treated the same way when they are revealed. This used to be a very clear cut issue. Any baseball player who used PEDs at any point in his career was considered a life long user who cheated the game. There were no excuses. There were no justifiable reasons to use them. That seems to be changing now and I would like to know why.
