Anybody have AIM for Macintosh?

A couple people back home (relatives) want to all talk at the same time to each other and me in the same chat space while I'm in Spain, but this university firewall is so restrictive AIM is the only main messenger I can get on.

They have Macs and went to download AIM for Macintosh only they couldn't get it to work (one of them said it came up as a movie).

Any ideas?

Oh and one accidentally downloaded AOL trying to get Messenger and inadvertendly signed up for an account, so now they're having the fun of trying to cancel it.

I think your relatives are completely technologically incompetent. AIM is widely available for Macs.

They downloaded the AIM for Mac program off the AIM website and said it wouldn't work... said something about it being a movie?

I'm assuming there's something screwy with an extension association?

I don't know Macs so I'm just guessing.

I believe the iChat program links up to AIM. It should be a default piece of software on the mac. Unless it's changed in the newer version. They simply would need to register an account.

if you go to meebo.com, they can access aim, yahoo instant messanger among others... I'm not 100% positive it works on macs but it's worth a shot.

I just use ichat (as mentioned, it comes with the mac). However, I don't know if it allows the multiple-people-in-a-room feature that AIM has (I've never tried). But if you're just looking to chat via AIM, iChat will get the job done.
