saving game
why is saving the game such a pain?
you have to use 8 characters? you can't seem to overwrite an old save? am i doing something wrong here? I just bought the game so maybe I am doing something wrong but it seems unnecessarily clumsy ![]() |

Sounds like you're using the "Save game under new league ID" button
To the left of that is the normal Save game button, which overwrites the old save |

Yes, I know you can overwrite the last save you created but you cannot overwrite a previous save.......I like to have 3-5 saves at a time in case of disaster. And after time goes by, I like to overwrite the oldest save I created. The game will not allow it for some silly reason.....and the delete saved game button also doesnt work
And, why 8 characters? I know I know, just play the damn game and shut up ![]() |

I just go into the universe directory and winrar game files for the particular game to a backup directory. Winzip would do the same thing. For example, if the game id is xxxxyyyy, highlight all the files that begin with that id plus the frfoot.fgr file (not sure if that file is even needed in a backup, but I include it anyway) and add them to an archive. They compress down to almost nothing. You can name the rar/zip files anyway you like and keep them, delete them, whatever.

How do you know which files you can remove from the universe folder?

if you delete a saved game from within the game, it will delete all the associated files. Otherwise, as far as I know, you can remove files as described above (i.e., all starting with xxxxyyyy or whatever of a game you don't want anymore). Before deleting anything, however, I would copy the entire universe file to a temp directory so you can restore it in case anything goes wrong. You can also delete any .fop and .fdp files (gameplans).
