noob on here and in the game...anyways, just curious as to what positions you guys think are the most important

if i were to start a league with a team and a random file draft, which positions do i need to focus on early on?

i ask because i got a stud rb with a pretty good oline and couldnt run the ball for jack, so is the passing game the key here?

or am i better off just simming the games and not calling the plays?

Personally I build from the OL & DL to the LB's & Secondary and a QB, then fill in skilled positions WR/RB/TE.

My top five picks are usually 2 OT, DE, DT, MLB
Picks 5-10 are usually 2 OG, CB, SLB, DE, DT

Not in my opinion.

I start with the QB and then alternate defense and offense.

I didn't say there weren't important, building a complete team is very important to winning in this game that goes w/o saying, you can have the best RB in the game but if you have no OL you may rack up yards but you're prolly not going to win consistently.

I took your question as "where should I start" to build a team, hence my reply.

Put in this perspective, I think it depends on what you want to do. If you want to win right away, take the stud QB first.

If you can wait a few years, go for a good RB, secondary, and defensive line first. Then go for a QB, offensive line, LBs, and WRs who have plenty of potential, while still getting an older player who has good leadership and intelligence at each of those positions (so he can become a mentor). Usually you can find some good rookies to 2nd/3rd year players who have great potential later in your draft.

i'd say qb no 1 for definite. u have a good qb and a good passing attack you can make teams pass against you. this lets you to go one dimensional on d line and get guys who go after the qb.

cb is my next most important as pass d is all important and then o line for pass protection.

next is des and wrs. after that dts and olbs.

i tend to fill in the rest of the positions. a good idea is to go one dimensional on one unit and try to get a strength for cheap.for example o lineen who can only pass block.

Before starting my SP league I read everything posted on this board about drafting. OT and DE were a high priority in this game.

I tried a different drafting strategy where I did not select a lineman until all of the other 22 positions were filled. I felt that with the snake draft, I would always have weaknesses somewhere to deal with. Instead of joining the feeding frenzy in the first 2/3 rounds with linemen, I wanted to be recruiting slightly ahead of the crowd in the other positions.

With the first pick in the draft I would always select a QB. My next two picks which will now always be consecutive, would be CB and RB. My next two: WR and CB...then MLB/TE...the highest available SS/FS/OLB...next FB and thereafter the highest rate of the unfilled skill positions.

Then K/P...then OL/DL.

I also would not select any player with 10 years or over experience even if he was the highest rated player at the position. I wanted no aging vets on my team that would allow me to focus my first couple of years draft picks on OL an DL players exclusively.

I also read a post that seemed to indicate I could find decent C's and G's thru FA.

I tried this drafting strategy about 6-7 times and compared my power ratings in total and by position.

Yes, it takes a lot of effort to get in position of the first draft pick, but I wanted to test my strategy for my first SP league.

I went 13-2-1 my first season, but lost in the second round of the playoffs. I drafted 2 OT, 1 OG, 2 DE and 2 DT in my first draft. I am currently 5-1 in my 2nd season. During FA I picked up a 72/72 LG/RG at a very affordable contract versus other guys of this talent and position.

One noob strategy...I sort of feel like a Steve Spurrier type of guy as a neophyte NFL GM.
