What do you do?
It's 1975.
You've won 3 Super Bowls since the day the NFL dawned in 1960 and have a proud tradition of a strong aerial assault. Ken Stabler has been your QB for the past 8 seasons and has won 2 straight MVP awards, but you don't like him. You hate his inability to avoid a sack and your overall feeling is that he just doesn't have the killer instinct that Johnny Unitas, your former QB had, nor can he carry a game by himself. Previous games against good defenses have shown this. Your WR corps is the kind that even a monkey could throw to and have a decent chance of catching it. An aging, but still deadly Paul Warfield in his 12th season and an emerging, 2nd year Lynn Swann are your best targets. You've never had a LT worth anything, nor a RB that was more than average. Sitting atop this year's draft: A RB they call Sweetness. A RB that would end 15 years of franchise RB drought. You have the #29 pick. The Saints hold the #1 pick. They want Stabler, your #29 pick and your first round picks in the next two drafts for #1 and the right to pick Sweetness. Washington holds the #2 pick, but won't trade because of cap concerns. New Orleans has a pretty good RB in a third year player, Chuck Foreman, but Sweetness isn't likely to get past the Redskins unless they go with Steve Bartkowski or Steve Grogan, two QBs highly raved about. And that still leaves the question of just who the Saints would take. Your archrival holds the # pick and aren't likely to do you do any favors by making a trade. You have no QBs on the roster besides Stabler, having relied on scrubs and mentors as your backups for the last 8 years. Do you make the deal and get Sweetness, figuring you can always find a replacement QB later who, if not as talented overall, won't drive you nearly as batty? Or do you pass on the deal and try to keep your historic winning tradition and passing genius going with a QB you grow to hate more and more each day?

Start marshalling draft picks so you can trade to get 1(1) in 1983.

I can tell you if I was the Saints, I would trade my current RB and draft Payton.
If I was you, I would look at your team and ask myself, if I had no round 1 picks for 3 years, what would my team look like in year 4. From what you have described, I would make the trade, and hope that I get a decent QB through the draft. |

That's an excellent question. Overall, my team would start to look pretty old at some places where they're currently quite strong, but by the same token, with my current team, we're destined to have the next 3 years of playoffs with no Super Bowls, which would net us late 1st rounders anyway. Granted, I've had a lot of success with late 1st rounders, but there's some positions that you just can't find a franchise player for that late in the draft. I've seen a lot of teams win Super Bowls in this universe without having a top-tier QB, so yeah I think I'll make the deal. ![]()

I made the trade, but seeing that Payton thread really made me feel better about it.

Walter Payton just retired in my dynasty, in case you haven't seen it, so you can see how the trade turned out for us.
