2007-08 NCAA Division I football playoffs start next weekend!
Looks like we've got a good slate of games for the opening round of next week's playoff. If Hawaii wins tonight, it's looking like the seedings will be:
#1 Ohio State (Big Ten winner) vs #8 Hawaii (At Large) #2 Georgia (At Large) vs #7 West Virginia (Big East Champ) #3 LSU (SEC champ) vs #6 USC (Pac 10 champ) #4 Virginia Tech (ACC champ) vs #5 Oklahoma (Big XII champ) What game are you looking forward to most? Will Hawaii be able to keep up their magical season versus a rested OSU team? I think Pat White's injury could knock WVa out early to a hot Georgia team. LSU vs USC in the first round? Most people thought that those two would be playing for the title back in September. Va Tech and Oklahoma are both playing well, but I'll take Oklahoma in that game. As long as their starting QB is out there OU will be a tough team to beat. My first round prediction: Ohio State over Hawaii Georgia over West Virginia LSU over USC Oklahoma over Virginia Tech --- My second round prediction: #1 Ohio State over #5 Oklahoma #3 LSU over #2 Georgia I think Ohio State can beat a team like OU. They don't play the style that crushes OSU (spread offense a la Illinois). LSU vs Georgia will be an amazing game to watch. But I think that LSU will prove that they are (still) the best team in the SEC. Championship game prediction: LSU over Ohio State 27-17 I'd love for Ohio State to pull the upset, but they'll be 7-point underdogs to a very talented LSU team and I think LSU will be able to wear down OSU and pull out an undisputed national championship. Looking forward to next weekend's games! They kickoff at noon with #4 Virginia Tech vs #5 Oklahoma and end with a primetime matchup of #1 Ohio State versus #8 Hawaii. Lots of exciting matchups and I can't wait until they crown a true national champion in January. |

You know, looking at all that...I really don't want to see a playoff system in college football.

Don't these kids have finals to study for, and term papers to finish up?

Funny, playoffs seem to work for high school football in EVERY SINGLE STATE and for EVERY SINGLE LEVEL of college football.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_system It's basically a seeded tournament where every team plays every round and the teams that win are bubbled to the top over the course of the tournament. It, of course, would never happen, but it is by far the fairest way to have a competition for this many teams when you can't play a zillion games. In fact, that is what the swiss tournament system is designed to do. You would start off with a seeding of all 120 D1 teams according to last seasons finish. The #1 seed would play the #61 team in the first week, #2 vs #62, etc. After week one, the teams are divided into tiers, based on number of wins. The process for week one is repeated for each of these tiers. The following week, the teams are divided into tiers based on number of wins again and so on.
