PSP or Playstation 3

I have a Wii, 360 and DS along with my gaming computer.

Well the Wii and DS are really my daughters. Anyway, I was at my friends house the other day and played MLB 07, road to the show. It was a great game. Well it is a Sony exclusive and I can't get it for any of my systems.

Has anyone ever played it on PSP and PS3? Is it the same game?

Is the PSP a decent gaming system?

I was thinking about getting a PS3 just for the Blue Ray player. It looks like Blue Ray is going to win the war, so I may as well get a gaming system also.

I thought about getting a PSP so I would have a hand held gaming system. What other good sports games are out for it?

PS3 for the Blu Ray player. The stand alone players are still 400 bucks. If you're the type of guy that primarily buys movies, I see no reason not to just start buying Blu Ray's right now, in leiu of DVD's.

I have MLB 07: The Show for both the PSP and PS3. I'd go with the PS3 without a doubt. The graphics are a pretty substantial upgrade. The only reason I'd every go with the PSP if I had to choose between the two is if you're a regular business or personal traveller.

If you have the means to get both copies, you can start a career on your PS3 and can transfer it over to the PSP to play it on the go. Nice little feature for those that have both.

Somewhat off-topic, but with a question regarding the quality of the Blu-Ray drive of the PS3.

If Blu-ray is going to win the "next-gen" DVD war, as some are speculating, is there any drop off of quality in the Blu-Ray player that Sony has in it's PS3, as compared to a normal stand alone Blu-Ray player? The reason why I ask is when XBOX first came out, some people bought one mainly for movies, but also to play games, and were disappointed when the original XBOX didn't have progressive scan. In general, the movies didn't look that great on the player.

I haven't done my homework, but does anyone have an opinion on the subject?

I think it doesn't output in a certain sound format, which is probably not going to matter to you. It may also not have 24f playback, which is a bigger deal. But for the most part, it's the easiest BD player simply cause it already has a wifi connection...it'll be a lot easier to upgrade the firmware to play discs.

Interestingly enough, most of the home theater sites recommend the PS3 as being one of the better Blu-ray players on the market, especially for the price. The only players that they recommend before the PS3 are some of the $1,000+ machines, which are obviously out of the price range of most consumers. The other major advantage of the PS3 is that Sony has been much better about updating the firmware on the PS3 than they have on the stand-alone players. They've been sending out the firmware updates with the PS3 system updates, which usually come out every 4-6 weeks. They've been adding some nice functionality to the system.

Here's a couple of reviews. This reviewer believes that the PS3 may be the best BR player available.

This reviewer doesn't go quite that far, though he does mention that the PS3 is a great option for anyone with even a slight interest in gaming who wants a great all-in-one package.

Thanks for the update. I haven't jumped into the next-gen gaming market, as my interest has been dwindling in video games over the past few years, but I am interested in HD movies, so it may be a good time to buy.

As much shit as I give Mizzou I have to say I do appriciate all the information you provide. I was reading on Sony's site and it appears they upgrade both the PSP and PS3 pretty often.

What are there in terms of "party" games for the PS3? As for myself, I see myself as more of a wii gamer these days (girlfriend and other friends sitting around playing group type games)

Singstar is a pretty popular game for the 'non-gamer' crowd. You can play up to 8 players in a glorified version of karaoke with various game modes where you can compete or cooperate. My friend has 2 girls (8 and 10 years old) and they love the PS2 version that I have. The new PS3 version is coming out this week in Europe and should be in the U.S. by January. The nice thing about the new Singstar is that there should be a lot of songs available for download in addition to the 150 or so songs on the game itself. It's getting good reviews thus far. Should see more reviews as the week progresses.

Rock Band is obviously available for both the 360 and PS3. Good party game.

Outside of that, there's not a whole lot available right now. I do know that Sony has a few 'party' games in development, but they likely won't be available until the holiday season in 2008. The Wii is still the better option for party games.

EA has said that the PS3 will be the primary development console for next year's sports games. That should help clear up the problems with the PS3 versions of the games (shouldn't cause any problems with the 360 versions). This year's games were developed for the 360 and then ported to the PS3, which caused some real headaches for developers as the PS3 architecture doesn't take kindly to 360-developed games.

All of this sounds really good to me, thanks Mizzou. I know you get a bad rap around here, and I'm truely unbiased, but to me it seems like going forward the PS3 is the way to go.

I own both systems and are completely different.

If you want top gaming experience, go with PS3.

If you want to play anywhere, like during trips, while waiting somewhere, or even in the WC, then buy the PSP. Some games like MLB the show and Madden08 are awesome in the PSP.

I love both systems, of course you can't compare PSP and PS3 graphics, but if you travel a lot or don't have time to sit and play for hours, pick the PSP. If you can play games for hours, enjoying the graphics and deeper gameplay, pick the PS3.

Just curious: Do you have a link where they said that the PS3 will be the primary development platform? I haven't seen that anywhere and with the 360 having the much larger install base in America, it would seem that would remain the primary development platform.

I'm just impressed that you already have a gaming PC, Wii, Xbox 360, DS, are a father of at least 2 kids, have time to play at your friend's house, and still appear to have the disposable time and income for another gaming system. With 2 daughters of my own, I can't fathom how you can pull it off.

I have most of the same systems as you do, astrosfan, without the kids (or significant other at the moment). I don't have the Wii nor the gaming PC, but I do also have the PSP and PS3.

At first blush, especially since you said you were interested in the blu-ray player, the PS3 seems like the obvious choice in my book. However, I wonder, with all the other gaming stuff you have, how often do you think you'll USE the PS3? What I like best about my portables (DS and PSP) is that I can sit on the couch and play something mindless while I'm watching TV. Or if I'm up at my parents' house, I can play it there while they're watching Emeril (shudder). Or I can play it while I'm laying in bed, waiting to be tired enough to really fall asleep.

The games on the PSP aren't bad. There are a lot of RPG/strategy-esque games that were released recently, and the sports games are pretty good. And MLB: The Show rocks.

So I guess I'd say that if you think you're more likely to have "time" to play the PSP (given travel, other TV viewing, other game playing), the PSP might seem like the better choice, though I'm going to go with my initial instinct and recommend the PS3. I love mine, though there aren't *too many* good games out for it yet.

My wife is a gamer. That helps out greatly. Family time in our house is all of us sitting around playing games together. Our living room is actually a network for everyone's computer.

Thanks for the info. The PS3 would really only be for the blue-ray and the occasional title that i would like on that system.

I think I might go with the PSP. I would probably use it at work for downtime. The type of job I have, I work alot from home. I usually just go to meeting after meeting at work, write up documents and procedures and field phone calls.

I think my wife bought me a PSP for Christmas. My daughter is on a dance team. So we have to travel ALOT for the competitions. I usually get guilted into going and sitting there for 10 to 12 hours on Saturdays and Sundays during the season.

So I guess this is their plan to make sure I go with little complaining.
