The Official Bash The Detroit Lions Thread
How the hell can the Detroit Lions choke away a 6-2 record???? They beat the Bears 2x, hammer Denver, yet lose to Washington 34-3, blow a fourth quarter lead against the Cowboys, and get run out of the stadium by the Chargers and Eagles (50 + points against). What a friggin' joke of a franchise. Yeah, Marinelli REALLY has things going in the right direction in Detroit. WTF, did Matt Millen give the team a pep talk after their 6th win or something??
Stupid Ford family needs to sell the team and Millen needs to be fired and shot into outer space without an oxygen tank. How much more can we take from this completely inept franchise???? ![]()

Kitna only needs 1,293 yards passing in the last two games for 5,000 yards on the season.

It was kind of cute seeing the Lions fans all fired up earlier this year.
I just couldn't bring myself to tell them how things would turn out. |

I was not one of those dillusional fans. Even if they started the season at 10-0, I would know what the end result would be. It is so completely ridiculous what is going on with that team. I keep having some shred of hope that something positive will happen, but alas...... For crying out loud, the Vikings with Tarvaris Jackson will probably make the playoffs. Yes, they have Peterson and a good defense, but they didn't start 6-2 either. The Lions are pathetic.

So how would you fix the Lions?
Outside of gratuitous violence I mean. Realistically what would you do? Millen isn't going anywhere. Marinelli isn't either.

RomaGoth, not to pick on you, but exactly which team(s) are you a fan of? Didn't I see you posting about the Dolphins in another thread about how you like them? I guess you're a Detroit fan, too? Are we going to find out that your favorite teams in other sports are the Grizzlies, Blackhawks, Pirates, and Grand Rapids Rampage?

I grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Thus, I followed the Lions for many, many years and suffered through all of the misery. Yes, I am also a fan of the Miami Dolphins (have been since Marino was a rookie), although not as much since Marino retired. The other NFL team I like is the Steelers, I have liked them since I was a child. I am mostly a Lion fan because of where I grew up. I also like the Red Wings in hockey and the Pistons in basketball. I like the Tigers in baseball (grew up watching them as well), but my first team in baseball is the Yankees. I like Michigan and Miami in college football. I have stuck with all of the above teams throughout my life, some more than others depending upon where I live. I don't like the Grizzlies, hate the Blackhawks, indifferent to the Pirates, and never really got into the Arena league (Grand Rapids Rampage). It may seem that I like all these different teams, but ultimately there really aren't that many. There is nothing wrong with liking more than one team as long as you are true to them. I am not a bandwagon jumper like a lot of people seem to be these days. I don't take your question personally, it is a reasonable question to ask. ![]()

No gratuitous violence??? Nothing can be done as long as Millen is there. He is completely inept in what he does (or does not do). Marinelli doesn't seem too bad, but the jury is still out on that one. I always thought Mariucci was a good fit, but he completely failed there and was run out of town.

Wow, RomaGoth, I had no idea that you grew up in Grand Rapids. I just threw the Rampage into that question because they're about as terrible as the other teams I mentioned in there. Eerie.

The Rampage are 30-64 since they won their championship, and that includes an 8-6 and an 8-8 season. They're 14-50 over the past four years. Yep, they are absolutely horrible. Ah, well, this thread is supposed to be about a different football team in Michigan. I'll make a Bash the Rampage thread sometime in March.

Detroit is an okay team. They went 6-2 thanks to a fairly easy schedule and they've been 0-6 since thanks to a very difficult one. I don't see how this is hard to understand.
Last 6 losses: AT Arizona VS NY Giants VS Green Bay AT Minnesota VS Dallas AT San Diego Were the Lions favored to win any of these games? Should they have been? |

You. You go play with your rooms full of action figures and shut the fuck up. Ok, now that we've gotten the pleasantries out of the way.... This is the way I approached the Lions this year. Was I excited when they were 6-2? Yes, of course I was. I made a conscious decision to just sit back and enjoy it. It's been so very, very long since we've seen any sort of success from this team, that instead of wringing my hands about the inevitable, I decided to try and enjoy it as much as possible. I never had any delusions about this team. It was pretty clear that, despite their 6-2 record, good teams in the NFL don't get blown out as badly as the Lions did against Philadelphia and Washington. Still, they were 6-2 and it was kind of fun for a while. Then the wheels started coming off the wagon and what we suspected all along - this is not a very good team - started to come to fruition. Now, you non-Lions fans can get a hearty chuckle if you'd like, but, trust me, no one knew how this would end better than the pathetic group of people who have followed this team for years and years. The only thing that's a bit different this year, is that I am really becomming annoyed with the majority of the team. Marinelli has become irritating and other than a handful of players (Ernie Simms, Roy Williams, Calvin Johnson, Kevin Jones, TJ Duckett, Gerald Alexander, Dwayne White, and maybe one or two more), I could care less if they came back next year or not.

You're absolutely correct. It was just that the Lions were competitive in two of those games (New York and Dallas) and simply got blown out in embarassing fashion in the other four, in particular against Minnesota and San Diego. Even an "okay team" shouldn't smacked around as badly as the Lions did in those two games.

Being favored or not is irrelevant to this argument. When a team begins the season 6-2, they should more than likely make the playoffs. Regardless of whom they beat in the beginning of the season, or how easy the schedule was, the Lions should not have had a complete meltdown like this. They stopped scoring points like they were in the beginning, and the defense became a broken levy. San Diego is a pretty good team, but they should not have put up 51 on Detroit. Washington has a mediocre offense and put up 34, and the Eagles have a dreadful offense (except for Westbrook) and put up 56 on Detroit. Also, the Lions beat Tampa Bay earlier this year. I understand that most of this really doesn't matter because anything can happen in any given week, but my point is that the Lions have completely melted down in the last 6 weeks. With the "genius" Martz running the offense, they should be at least outscoring some of these teams.....

This is exactly my point. I just feel like bitching about the inept franchise called the Detroit Lions today. It is pent-up rage that has seethed inside me since I was a boy and watching guys like Eric Hipple and Rodney Peete run around and trip over the chalk lines. I am amazed at how poorly a franchise can be run yet people still go and see them. Even wearing a bag on their head (like last season) has not stopped the fans from paying good money for a joke of a team. When will it ever end? Maybe the Lions should be moved to Toronto and renamed the Argonauts.... ![]()

At least the Bills have BEEN to a super bowl (yeah, I know, 4 of them and they lost all 4). The only thing Lions fans have to cheer is some NFL championships in the 1950's. Who gives a shit about that????? I wasn't even born yet when those happened. Ugh. ![]()

The only meltdown was choking away what was almost a certain win against Dallas. The rest were just losses against equal or better teams. You're crazy if you think Detroit was going to put up any kind of fight travelling out west to face an in form San Diego team after that awful loss last week. I didn't think SD would put up 51, but it wasn't exactly surprising. |

Arizona = Detroit and it was on the road. There are almost no easy road games in the NFL. EDIT: I'll respond to the Giants comment here. The Giants were a horrible, horrible matchup for the Lions and this was before they had their own breakdown of sorts. Last edited by Fighter of Foo : 12-18-2007 at 01:20 PM. |

That the Lions lost the San Diego game was not surprising at all. It was how horribly out played the Lions were. I mean, they made Darren Sproles look like Ladanian Tomlinson. It was a joke. The bigger disappointment was against Minnesota. Granted, the Lions haven't won in Minnesota in some ridiculously long time, but it was a game against a divisional opponent with all sorts of playoff implications on the line. If you can't get up for that game and make it at least somewhat competitive, even on the road, you're just not a very good football team.
