2008 Movies

So which movies are the must see movies for this year. I would imagine the next Batman, Indiana Jones, and Iron Man are must see. Any other movies to watch out for?

Batman, Iron Man and The next Harry Potter movie are the only ones I know I will see right now. I might go see Indiana Jones, but I don't know yet.

Curious, but why wouldn't you go see Indiana Jones? I mean, is there something about this one that scares you away?

Way I look at it, loved the first three, and the same people are doing the fourth one, age be damned, so heck yeah, I'll give that a shot. They have earned it. Not that I am a hard sell.

I've been trying to keep up with spoilers on Cloverfield, theories, marketing, etc... and it has the potential to be a huge bust. I'll wait for reviews first.

That's sort of the problem, I hated Temple of Doom but loved Raiders and Last Crusade. I haven't read much on the plot for the next one but it sounds more like Temple of Doom to me so I am not as excited to see it.

I'd say that the odds are about 75% that I will see it because I do like the two other Indy movies, but I may wait for reviews before I actually do.

Well, it's not being screened for critics, so I wouldn't expect to see the reviews till midday on Friday or later.

I am also looking forward to the Batman movie, Wanted, that Wil Smith superhero movie (whatever it's called), Indiana Jones.

Over those, I will probably only see Cloverfield, Batman, and Indy in the theater. I rarely go to the movies anymore. It's sad.

What's so great about Iron Man? It's a man made out of iron. Whoop tee doo.

And what exactly is his superpower? He's rustproof?

Now, Galvinized Steel Man I could maybe get excited for.

Craig is Bond. It's called Bond 22 right now, not sure what its final name will be. It's currently in filming and a lot of the details are being kept secret, including the plot. Not due till November.

I'll be checking out the premiere at Sundance in about a week and a half (Sunday the 20th); I'll try to remember to post my thoughts on it after. I'm intrigued for sure to see how this one turns out - Gondry has such a unique vision, one of the real auteurs working right now.

Yup, I agree about the support cast -- awful.

However, have no fear! This is the same director that brought us such classics as.... umm.... Fried Green Tomatoes?

3 De Niro to 1 Pacino?

Godfather = Pacino
Scent of a Woman = Pacino
Raging Bull = De Niro
Goodfellas = De Niro

That looks like 2 Pacinos and 2 De Niros, no?

As for "Heat"... Well, it certainly had one of the greatest action sequences of all time. I loved that bank robbery scene. The problem with that movie, however, was that it really should have wrapped up like 20 minutes after that climax instead of draging on and on and on...

Really? Do those guys still carry that kind of weight? Pacino hasn't been stellar in quite a while. Ever since "Scent of a Woman" his acting style basically boils down to SCRREAMING every OTHER word or SO. I feel like more often than not over the last decade or so he's just a caricature of himself of late.

As for Di Nero, does he still have the same commanding screen presence anymore? After his run in the "Meet The Parents" flick, "Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle", "Analyze That" and the like, does he still have "it"? I dunno...

I think each of their stars have faded a bit since "Heat" and the idea of both on screen together really just doesn't register too much excitement anymore.

I could be wrong...

Spot on. Couple that with a none-too-special director and a terrible supporting cast and you have yourself a mediocre movie (at best) IMO. Hope I'm wrong.

Hmm, I don't know what I was thinking, perhaps it was weird that they put Pacino's movies both first instead of one and then the other, you know, 1122 instead of 1212. Anyway... H_B, it's a great question if they have that type of pull anymore. I am not going to go see that movie expecting to see a clash of '72 Pacino and '75 Deniro, in fact, I'll know I'll be getting two senior citizens at the tail end of their careers, and will enjoy it for what it is.

Admittedly, I'm excited just in the fact that this time they will be partners, ehehehehe

I agree, Shorty, that the "partners" angle does make this screen combo a little more exciting. By the time Pacino and Di Nero were on screen together in "Heat", Pacino had annoyed me so much that I it was really hard to cherish the moment.

Iron Man -- Because I read the comic book for years as a kid and know the story-line. Might be a problem for today's youth... So while the trailer was awesome to me, I can see this turning into either a niche movie or a super production that we think is cool for two weeks and then we forget about it ("Transformers" anyone?)

Indiana Jones -- Raiders of the Lost Ark? Awesome. Temple of Doom? Action-crappy. Last Crusade? Part awesome, part aciton-crappy. Indiana Jones 4? 28 years after the first, with the same lead character? I'll wait for the reviews.

Rambo -- I think Stallone would've been better served to direct a "re-make" rather than make Rambo 8 or whatever this is. He's older than my dad...and I'm old!

Saw this Sunday. Overall, it's an entertaining movie, if a bit scattershot. I wouldn't call it Gondry's best, and it's much more toned-down from a visual standpoint than "Eternal Sunshine" and "Science of Sleep". Lots of good stuff in the movie - the versions of real movies that Mos Def and Jack Black make with their neighborhood compatriots are pretty clever and show off a lot of Gondry's creativity, and also reflect an obvious love for movie making that he has and the way many directors start off themselves (making home movies with their friends) and they feel like a real celebration of that process.

There's also a nice storyline about the value of culture in bringing together a community.

However, in whole the movie feels somewhat patchwork, like Gondry had too many ideas and not enough of a way to tie them all together in a coherent, logical way.

Good performances by everyone involved. Jack Black is especially funny early on when he has the magnetism affliction. Mos Def does a good job with his role. Danny Glover is strong.

Bottom line for me - worth seeing, but not a masterpiece by any stretch.

Cool dawgfan. I really want to see Be Kind Rewind. I'm interested to see Mos Def because I have always been impressed his roles. I was especially impressed with him in The Woodsman.

Sundance, huh? That has always been kind of a dream of mine. I would give anything to go to Sundance.

I'm not looking forward to all 55 of course, but this is a pretty good list so I thought I'd share...

55 Must See Movies of 2008

As a bonus this link has some movies to look forward to in 2009 & 2010 including "Terminator 4" and "Toy Story 3".

It's not all that difficult really. The big thing is booking a place to stay ahead of time. It can obviously be expensive if you want to stay right in town, but you can find places a little bit outside of town for cheaper (out near Kimball Junction for example), though most places that rent in the area during Sundance want a 5-night minimum stay. I usually rent a big house/condo and go with a group of family and friends to spread out the cost. I think you can even find online links to rental properties off the Park City official website.

That said, Park City is only ~45 minutes away from Salt Lake City, so you could just book a place in SLC and drive up to Park City for the day. Parking isn't impossible, and they have a free bus shuttle system to get people around all the different theater venues.

As for tickets, you can register online for advance ticket purchase - if you get selected, you then have an assigned 30 minute window when you can order tickets. After that, it's pretty hard to find advance tickets. However, you can do the wait list thing, which involves arriving at the venue about 2-3 hours ahead of time, getting a ticket representing your place in line and then you come back about 45 minutes before the film to see if you can get in. If you arrive enough in advance you can usually get an early enough spot to get a ticket for that film.

Anyway, it's a fun time. The town is crawling with Hollywood people (and of course paparazzi) so people watching is fun, and if you ski or board the resorts there (Park City & Deer Valley) are amazing. It is very crowded, but that's to be expected.

The best way to get there as a local...volunteer...LOL!

Anyways, I wish I would have known you were in town...Park City is like 45 minutes to an hour from where I live.

Anyways...hope you enjoyed it so far!
