nice post.
How do you know he isn't a great QB? The guy has played in about 5 games in his whole career. |

It looks like Brent Rawls is starting to pull away from the pack in spring practice. He's been sensational, demonstrating good mobility, arm strength, and a nice touch on fade routes. Look for him to be the starter in September.
Of course, nothing is written in stone at this point, but Rawls is clearly ahead of Jason White, Paul Thompson and Noah Allen. |

i'm not an OU fan but some of my best friends are. One went to the Spring Game on Saturday.
Some of you might be interested in his report... Here is the review of the game. Jason white goes 7-13 with two chris simms (a.k.a., passes returned for touchdowns by the wrong team). He threw zero touchdown passes. He runs like an elephant on codeine. His knees have more tape than a Scott Bentley video collection and his throwing motion has more hitches than all the pickup trucks in east texas. Beyond that, he has three starts and big parts in two other games accounting for an experience lovefest from the local SFOTI and SFOTR (Super Fans of the Radio--aka all the nimrods that call into sports radio). He is, at best, an average to average minus quarterback. Two surgeries ago he was good to average plus. In trots brent rawls, he of the cannon arm and non-surgically repaired knees. He promptly leads the first team offense on a 70 yard scoring drive against the first team defense utilizing the tight ends, wide receivers and throws his touchdown pass on an improvised scramble while hitting the fullback in the flat five yards past the line of scrimmage. in short, he uses the whole field. also, mofo is quick. he is 6'5 and can see the whole field. shortcomings: hybl disease, meaning, he effing loves the tight end. locks onto them in all third and shorts. makes a bonehead decision now and then (this is the only area in which i give white a leg up, no pun intended). rawls finishes 11-17 with for close to two hondo with one td and one pick. I am now a Rawls cultist. Backs and offensive line: O-line is good, could be great. Depends on a couple of the younger guys. Will be a strength for a change. Running backs are solid, but unspectacular. Jones drops some out of the backfield. That will be noticeable as the midget never did. but its not a disaster area either, just Q had slightly better hands. fullback clears the way (Hanta Yo!) very nicely and has soft hands. We finally have athletes at tight end that can block, run and catch. will be a nice surprise this year. I was surprised at the speed at that position. was used to tall white guys who run their mouth. Wide Receivers. Jujuan Rankings, Travis Wilson and Mark Clayton are studs. Best WR we have had during Stoops time. Brandon Jones = MIA. Don't understand why he doesn't break thru. Defense: stout. did i say STOUT? STOUT! if not the best front seven in the country then one of the top two or three for sure. donte nicholson helps so much at safety. the Roy position is steady again with an enforcer instead of that speedster we put out there last year. He cranks it up in run support and knows how to get to the backfield on blitzes. instant starter. huge huge improvement over bassey (by the way, bassey went from starter to second string and doesn't even play the dime package, thats how good the secondary is this year). defense has a chance to be one of the all-time greats at OU. Larry Birdine is a name you will hear. kid can move from the Defensive End position. They are calling him the next Cedric "Silent Assassin" Jones. Good to have another defensive end. DTs are good, but not so good its scary. still waiting for that. Bad news of the day was when Rufus Alexander went down with an ACL. He was being groomed as Lance Mitchell's replacement. That hurts. With the addition of Chijoke and the return from bongland of Everage our nickel D will be sick. Punting: Sucks. I am not understating. Every other one was shanked. Thank god all USA-Today punter Cody Freeby is due on campus soon. He is an immediate starter. Kicking: Fine. Dicarlo is money from 35-in and has difficulty beyond 45. Good not great college kicker. Kickoffs: better than last year. actually getting them consistently two to three yards deep into the endzone unlike last year. kick / punt returns: will be perkins plus unknown. will be good to great depending on who is unknown. |

thanks for the breakdown. I heard stoops after the game saying that rawls still has alot of growing up too do. But how can you play white?
Yes I know he hasnt played many games, but I saw every game he played in, and he just wasnt that spectacular imho. If I was white I would go back to golf. Its obvious he just wasnt made to play football.

just nitpicking, but Hybl was the golfer, not White.
It's obvious that Rawls is the best QB athlete, but don't underestimate Jason White. He will spend significant time on the field this year if healthy. The QB doesn't have to be spectacular in this offense to win games...that's what the defense is for. Also, Brandon Jones was arguably the star this spring at WR. He spends alot of time playing OF for our crappy baseball team, but he's definitely not MIA. |

I just don't get it...the Jason White love-fest. I mean, sure, this team and offense doesn't *need* a spectacular QB to win games. Hybl won many last year without being mobile, without making the best of decisions, but with a pretty good arm. However, think about what this team and offense could be with a spectacular athlete who can make the pinpoint throws and maybe get first downs on key third down situations. I'm not saying White is a bad QB, but he has two bum knees, has started three games in his career, and his team won two of them. He subbed and contributed to two more wins, but one of his wins as a starter was finished by Nate (and more importatnly Renaldo Works).
Why start a senior with not a whole lot of experience, when you could start a more mobile, bigger, taller, stronger-armed quarterback, who has shown in spring practice that he has cut back significantly on mistakes? It just does not make sense. |

I agree with D winning games, and I did get the two mixed up. But Look at the games we lost last year, the D just couldnt support the team all year long. I think If we could have been able to move the ball better last year we would have done better.

Yes! The beloved Rawls from my hometown of Shreveport!! Did I forget to Mention he led his team to the State Title his first year as a starter in his Senior season at ECA. He had to wait for National Player of the Year Brock Berlin.
Man can I boast about ECA. They have produced some very highy touted prospects at the QB spot. Josh Booty (LSU, Cleveland Browns) Brock Berlin (Florida now at Miami) John David Booty (First Junior in HS to skip his SR yr in HS to attend USC) Brent Rawls (OU) Phillip Deas There were many More |
