Player File Limit

The Player File Generator says that the sim can handle up to 2500 players. Since I know from creating various leagues that you end up with well over 3000 players, my question is this: is that 2500 a hard cap? Meaning that there's absolutely no way to get around having a bunch of fictional rookie free agents in your player pool?

I pulled all the names of "active" players from NFL.com and the list is 2930 names long. So if I went and created a file from those names, I see three possible outcomes:

1) the sim rejects it because its more than 2500 names long
2) the sim takes it and it cuts the number of fake rookie scrubs to 300 or so
3) the sim takes it and still creates 800 to 1000 fake rookie scrubs.

Those probably aren't the only possible outcomes, but I'm wondering if anyone's ever tried a player file with more than 2500 players in it, and if so, what happened.

Hmm, I guess you should ask Nilodor as I think he's the one with the most experience in creating player files.

Hmm, I don't think I've ever created a file that large. I vaguely remembering running into a 2500 player hard cap at one time, but can't say for sure. For the second part of the question it seems to me that you'll still wind up with quite a few fictional free agents, unfortunately not all scrubs. I do remember by creating a couple hundred roster filler free agents (5+ year vets so they were fully developed with minimal scout error) that there seemed to be less starter quality free agents that were initially signed to AI teams. The best thing to do is give it a quick test in excel and see what happens, shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to find out if it's possible.

Thanks for the advice. I did run a test as you suggested and it turns out that 2500 is in fact a hard cap. I created a 3100 player csv and though the Player File Creator took it without error, it truncated it and created a 2500 player .fdt file.

So 2500 is the limit, meaning there's no way around having fictional free agents in your universe. I suspect it may have been done that way to ensure a proper balance of positions and so on to make sure the rosters could be legit. The .fdt file is only 481k, so I don't think it's a memory issue.
