Thank God We Fired Dusty

I still love reading what this man says if for nothing else for its humor:

Not down with OBP: Baker has repeatedly talked about the desire to have a do-it-all leadoff hitter with speed. What kinds of hitters is he looking for further down the lineup? Does he want guys with lofty on-base percentages? The answer will likely not sit well with fans of the book "Moneyball," because Baker said he believes the OBP statistic is overvalued.

"I'm big on driving in runs and scoring runs," Baker said. "Guys in the middle should score about close to equal to what they drive in. On-base percentage, that's fine and dandy. But a lot of times guys get so much into on-base percentage that they cease to swing. It's becoming a little bit out of control.

"What you do is run the pitcher's count up, that helps," Baker said. "You put him in the stretch, that helps. But your job in the middle is to either score them or drive them in. The name of the game is scoring runs. Sometimes, you get so caught up in on-base percentage that you're clogging up the bases."

Hey, you gotta give the guy props for being consistent, right?

8/24/06:

"On-base percentage is great if you can score runs and do something with that on-base percentage," Baker said. "Clogging up the bases isn't that great to me. The problem we have to address more than anything is the home run problem."

3/10/04:

"No. 1, I've let most guys hit 3-0 (in the count). That's one reason," Baker said. "I think walks are overrated unless you can run. If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps, but the guy who walks and can't run, most of the time he's clogging up the bases for somebody who can run."

..............

"Who have been the champions the last seven, eight years? Have you ever heard the Yankees talk about on-base percentage and walks?" Baker said. "Walks help. They do help. But you aren't going to walk across the plate, you're going to hit across the plate. That's the school I come from."

I think this might make a great signature:

"The name of the game is scoring runs. Sometimes, you get so caught up in on-base percentage that you're clogging up the bases."

That's got a Yogi Berra quality to it. Like a SABR Yogi, or something.

I have this great image of 7 guys all standing on the various bases. You've got, like, three guys on third base, and they just won't move out of the way, so all of your other runners have to stay on first and second.

It could lead to a whole new type of statistic:

PLAY BY PLAY GUY: "Here's Jones, batting .425 with 5 or more runners in scoring position."

COLOR GUY: "Yeah, he's really been unclogging the bases all season. You need guys like that in the middle of your lineup."
