Ping:CoH players/former players (New Super Hero MMORPG in development)

http://www.champions-online.com

Just downloaded the initial trailer..

Apparently the folks at Cryptic (the folks who started City of Heroes) are behind this, and it looks really good (of course, it's an early stage of development, etcetera)

It's going to be really sweet to design my character's arch-nemesis, and then battle him with my hero.

Also: Certain missions will be opened up if your ID is secret or open.. for example, if it's an open ID, your family/friends could be at risk from villains seeking revenge, or if you have a secret ID, can you keep your identity a secret and live a dual life?

- The game's control scheme is closer to Marvel: Ultimate Alliance than it is to a traditional MMO.

- You can choose character animations to some extent. Some examples of movement animation given were "like a beast on all fours," "suitably mechanical motions" for a power suit hero, and "the all-knowing master of the mind can float inches above the ground with his arms crossed."

- You will design your character's secret identity, and decided whether to keep that identity hidden or go public with it.

- There will be a weaknesses and disadvantages system.

- You will design your own archenemy, giving him his powers, costume and name. It's possible to choose after a mission in which you confront your villain to somehow get rid of him for good, in which case you'll be provided a chance to create a new archenemy.

- There is a monster island, with dinosaurs.

- Also, a desert military base.

- Also, the moon!

- Loot and gear will be in the game, and can change your appearance. However, it's possible to turn off the visual effect of a piece of gear if it clashes with your costume and you'll still retain the bonus from having it equipped.

- There are factions you can join, which will offer new stores, costume items, insignias, and crafting stations.

- The game has cut scenes "like a traditional console game."

- The game has a level cap of 50.

- PVP will be included from day one.

- The game includes a class system. Jack Emmert says "The traditional roles are not so clear in Champions Online. For instance, anybody can tank - they just tank differently. ...All powers are open to all character classes - it's just that some powers are cheaper for a given class."

Yeah, been reading various takes on this at the CoH boards. I didn't play Champions, so that's not a draw for me.

Various thoughts:

* I don't like the cel-shading look
* Jack Emmert is a *tad* bitter about his CoX time, it appears.
* JE is also a little rigid with his "vision" (now where have we heard that term...) for the game, and it made a lot of CoX users not to happy with him, fwiw.
* Controls are going to be more console-like, and I think it is also going to be ported to the console? I'm not really in for something like that. I know in past examples, Emmert brought up things like struggles/challenges vs video games like Super Mario Bros. If there is more button mashing in this game...uh-uh.
* Mistakes were learned with CoH, and I'm sure more things will be taken into account (like power customization - CoH was written in a fashion where introducing this now would be a *major* undertaking). Some of the things that are promised here though apparently were also promised initially with CoH, so we'll see if they become a reality.
* The Moon - this makes me chuckle, as many CoX players have been wondering about a moon base (populated by the 5th Column, who are basically evolved from Nazis. Reminds me of the old Rocket Ranger game).
* Designing your own archenemy. I'd also love this, and also something that has been kicking around the CoX boards for ages.
* Cut scenes. These are nice at first, but the 5th, or 10th, or 100th time you've played a certain mission...well, those cut scenes can get a little stale.

I've been playing CoH for 33 months almost, and I doubt I'll be stopping any time soon. Heck, I didn't even to jump on the WoW bandwagon. So this really doesn't appeal to me, and I like the hero/comic book genre. But, that's not to say CoH is perfect, and I'm sure there will be plenty who will try this out. If it hangs on (other high profile MMOs like D&D Online or Tabula Rasa haven't set the world on fire), that will be interesting.

Well, I wouldn't play it so long if I didn't like it. I will say that it's the only one I've played though, and obviously many, MANY others prefer WoW. Morgado (MMO vet) says it's "carebear" compared to some, but that's not necessarily bad. He was going to drop WoW for CoH, coming back to CoH after a trial a couple years ago, but got sucked back into WoW raids. He did say that the game had progressed a lot in his absence though.

I like it for the variety. Many different power sets for varied play styles, excellent costume customization.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this, as it sounds like it could be a fun solo experience.

Today's post is a nice bit of speculation about the future of MMO superhero gaming.

i've been following this as well. The arcade action might be to help wiht the 360 port they are planning. Rumor is that 360 and PC players will run on the same server, so I'd be interested to see that.

Lots of promise, but I'm definately going to wait and see.

Wow, I'd given up on websnark posting on CoH.

(now that I look, he had one on Champions too)
