why the raiders suck
espn says the raiders just signed some de with 13 career sacks to a 50m dollar deal, with the idea of moving him to dt.
but its the biggest dt deal ever. guy never played the position before. oh yeah, he blew out his knee last year, too. good luck with all that, guys. |

+1 on the "Who?"
The Oakland Raiders stepped forward Thursday on the eve of free agency and signed Tommy Kelly to the largest contract ever given to a defensive tackle. Kelly, a defensive end scheduled to move to defensive tackle this season, signed a seven-year, $50.5 million contract Thursday that has $18.125 million in guarantees. In the first three years of the deal, he will make $25.125 million. The Raiders' plan is for the 300-pound Kelly to replace the retiring Warren Sapp as the three-technique defensive tackle in the Raiders' 4-3 defense. The move is similar to the one made last year by the Detroit Lions' Cory Redding, a franchise player who signed a seven-year, $47.5 million deal last summer, the highest among defensive tackles at the time.

They should have signed his brother, Johnny Kelley.

For that much money they should also get his sister, Kelly Kelley.

I like how the article says he was "scheduled to move to DT," as if it was a league decision or something.

You mean hiring a 31 year old college co-OC (and one who wasn't a very good one at that) as your head coach and then giving him less than a year with one of the worst teams in the NFL before trying and failing to fire him didn't tip you off to the fact that the Raiders sucked?
![]() If you ever wondered what would happen if a crazy guy ran an NFL team, now you know. Can't the Raiders get Al Davis committed or declared unfit to own a business or something? |

How do they determine position for franchise salaries? Is it by games started, total plays or whatever the team lists you as?

I believe it's a percentage of total plays (in fact I just looked it up, and in the Terrell Suggs case, the NFL and the NFLPA set it at 50%, which makes sense) . If it was what the team lists you as, I think you would see a number of 300lb+ men being listed as the starting punter all of a sudden...

Actually, he's played a lot of DT before. He would rotate in and out of playing DE/DT. He is better at the tackle position, but he was too similar to Sapp to play alongside him. He's a good player who they overpaid to retain.

Unfortunately, due to the absolute dysfunctional climate in Oakland they will have to overpay any free agents they get. The Raiders' biggest problem is Al Davis and until he dies, the situation there will never get better. I respect and love what he did with the team, but at this point he's an anachronistic remnant of the glory days.

Wilson was the one guy they got who they didn't overpay in this market. You can't evaluate a signing based on "3rd", "4th" or even "1st" highest on the position. The cap increases each year and free agent payouts go up. In a couple years, his 3rd will turn into 9th or 10th. As I said in the other thread and like Raiders Army said they have to overpay to bring in talent. I still think its better than doing nothing.

Is it really as simple as Al Davis is the problem? Maybe I am not giving Al enough credt but I don't see Al Davis at this point in his life looking for a Gibril Wilson or a Tommy Kelly much less signing them to huge deals. Jerry Jones? Yeah but not Al. I have no idea what the player evaluation structure is for the Raiders, so I could be completely wrong. Maybe Al is still breaking down tape and such.

I think Al isn't breaking down tape but is making personnel decision. Hence, he is a huge part of the reason the Raiders suck. |

If it's a defensive player signing, you can be sure that Al Davis at least okayed it.

I guess that's what you get when the FA Market is so thin and teams have lots of cap room. I suggest the NFL should addopt a ruling that only allows teams to negotiate contracts with players in their last year of contract.

AL is the problem- look at J.Russell the big reason his holdout lasted so long is the Raiders were waiting for the revenue sharing money to arrive, they couldnt pay him the huge bonus otherwise. This year they are looking to trade out of #4 for the same reason. Those are owner issues.

A little late for this as I didnt see the thread when it originally came out, but....
Al: OK....now that we got that Tommie Kelly guy signed we should be set on defense. With him and Gibril Wilson, I expect us to put some QB's down haad! Lane: Yeah...well, I think you have the wrong guys Al. Dont you mean Tommie Harris and Adrian Wilson? Like we talked about last week? Remember? Al: Umm...yeah, thats the guys. Lane: Are you shitting me old man? Exactly WHO IN THE FUCK did you sign? Al: Look Lane...those guys werent interested in playing for you...as I recall. So we got the next best thing. PTI had Warren Sapp on today and he was asked if the team was as dysfunctional as it appears to outsiders and in a round about way he said that that it is. He mentioned that the Raiders players have no clue who makes personnel decisions and they would joke during practice guessing what the job of certain guys that would show up to watch is. |
