I don't really know what we can do. The problems seem to be with our tackles. Cunningham is inexperienced, so he should improve over the season. Pederson is really a backup we hoped could fill in until Wooldridge comes back next year. He's actually doing well run blocking, but he doesn't seem to get the concept of pass blocking.
![]() Gaines is doing fine. Kramer isn't a great run-blocker, but we saw that in preseason. Terry is young and inexperienced at guard, so he should improve with more game time as well. I'd say increase our running to the left side. We could give Johnston a chance at RT over the next 4 games and see what he can do. Those are the only 2 changes I can think of making. |

Thank goodness for the D.
![]() Edit: I know wade wants us to be a running team, but we might want to slightly increase our passing. That might take some pressure off the running game. Just a thought. Last edited by Bee : 03-13-2003 at 10:07 AM. |

Interesting season. Looks liek signing Barker at QB was a fortuitous thing to stumble into... he really came through when called upon, it seems.
I'd support tweaking up the passing percentages, as well. Hey, as much as we are grumbling and grousing, we are 7-1 and clearly have a very strong defense. I'd liek to see our running game be more efficient, too - but overall, we're doing well. The fans are generally happy, I'd think. |

I'm generally a pass-happy guy, but with the defense playing so well, is there a need to make the offense riskier by increasing the passing?

I wouldn't make a huge increase, just a slight increase in an attempt to jumpstart the running game. We are completing around 65% of our passes, so I don't think it would be a big risk.

Heres a look at the defensive line.
Code:
Our DE's have been pretty solid. Finley is giving us what we expected. He is on track to set career highs in sacks and hurries. Davison has clearly slipped from his 1991 form, but is still a good contributor. Our DT's aren't getting much of a pass rush. The jury is still out on Ramsey. He is putting up decent tackle numbers, but not getting to the QB. Hammond has cooled off since camp. The starting Dline as a whole has a 4.2 PrPCT and a 6.2 TkPCT. |

As a benchmakr for comparison here are the PrPCT and TkPCT numbers for the starting 4 on teh teams in our division.
Fort Wayne PrPCt: 2.6 TkPct: 5.4 Pensacola PrPCT: 3.6 TkPct: 6.7 Fort Knox PrPCT: 2.6 TkPCT: 6.8 Based on those numbers (albeit a very small sample) it looks like we are playing pretty well up front.

Here's my 'impact' numbers for the D-Lineman (add up all the stats they record and divide it by number of plays they were on the field).
I think it generally shows how active a player is, how often they are a factor on a play: Code:
Now Greer and Battle have put up those numbers in extremely limited duty, so the chances of being a good reflection of the player are very slim. Hammond is a step behind the rest of the starting D-Line.

My first inclination was to start Castillo in running situations and play Hammond just on pass rushing downs, but I am not sure that helps us much. In over 100 snaps Castillo has only made 1 solo tackle.
So with the fact that we are only giving up 10 points a game it's probably worth it to let Hammond keep learning on the job. His stats so far look to be about a step behind Wolfe's first year. So even if he doesn't become the star Wolfe did. If he progresses at about the same rate he could be a very good starter.

On the passing situation...
I was actually thinking the same thing as I read it.. "Boy, maybe we need to pick up the pass game some"... as someone said, we're completing 65% of our passes, so it's not like our turnovers will go way up... I wouldn't change the distance of our passing, merely the frequency -- atleast in normal situations.. not a big jump, but hell, on first and 10 we're running 75% of the time right now .. obviously our running game is a little bruised and battered, and our line just isn't hitting on the big blocks.. the D has come through HUGE for us helping out, making it so we only need a FG in 3 of our games (in otherwords, 3 shutouts -- one of which we DID only score a FG)..So, I'm going to up them some.. but nothing drastic, we're not going to suddenly be the Raiders here... Coghill I must say has struggled, but that's to be expected.. it's nice that he is getting some PT this year, while still winning... Although, if Pritchett keeps it up, he might be starting until his kids are playing football ...A few offensive notes.. Pritchett: He continues to laugh in the face of those who call him an old man... although he did suffer an injury, he has only missed 3 starts, on top of the fact that he has missed few games in the past.. He has the 3rd best Rating in the league, is completing 67.1% of his passes, and is at 2.5:1 TD:INT rate... we couldn't ask for more from him, especially at the salary he ended up asking for... I am really personally inclined to start him (besides with injuries) until he gives me a reason not to -- right now he gives me reason to think he should be making more money. I know that Cog is the QB of our future, but this guy still has it going for now.. RBs: Crawford continues to prove to me that he cannot be a feature back. He has only 3.5 ypc compared to The Ox's 4.4, of which he was hurt most of the time. I hate that we're going to have to keep him over the Ox, particuraly because their fan status doesn't seem to be budging.. I wish we could have somehow gotten one of the two guys in the draft this year.. if you do a recommend on RBs by CURRENT rating, those two are the top now, in their rookie year.. WRs: I guess to get more thrown at the WRs I'd have to increase the distance? I get frustrated sometimes at how few go to the wideouts.. but.. we win... so it makes me very torn.. Definately know 1,000 yard reciever this year.. OL: They have picked it up a bit and are all over 30% RB now.. We'll just suck it up until Wooldridge comes back and the young guys get some more experience.. Baker Watch: Code:
For some reason that amuses me.. Wouuld you all rather I try to sim tonight (probably can't.. but if i can) or tomorrow morning?

One thing I do like about Crawford is it seems he has a nose for the endzone. He seems like a big bruiser type running back (3 yards and a cloud of dust kinda guy) which is always nice to have on the team. But I agree with Wade, he doesn't seem to be a feature back.

I totally agree with your assessment Bee.. He's a GREAT asset as a complimentary back.. but...
On a side note.. we may be on a crash course with Baker's 8-0 Sacremento team.. that could be fun ![]()

Ummm....
We just outscored our opponents 141-54 in the last 4 games and 20 points is the most any team has scored on us all year... This team definately looks better than any team we've had, atleast during the regular season... #1 Rush Offense, #1 Pass Defense,#7 Rush Defense, #30 Pass Offense, #1 Turnover Margin (a BIG improvement from the past), #2 3rd down conversions, #2 Scoring Offense, #1 (by far) Scoring Defense, #2 Red Zone Offense, #9 Red Zone Defense.... Riddick Finley is second in the league in sacks... Armstrong is tied for third in INTs.. All of this with Our run blocking still much worse than it has been in the past.. Wow..
