So I'm sitting here..the guy has been doing "stuff" for over 2 hours..looks like another hour at least for him to finish. 2 box install.
Do you tip a guy doing free installation? |

No, not unless you think he's had to go over the top to accomodate you. You'll probably notice the difference. If so, maybe slip him a 20 and tell him to get himself dinner or something.

I say no as well. My guy was a fuckup so he definitely didn't deserve one.
Even if he did, I wouldn't have given him one. |

I wouldn't tip him. If you do that, next thing you know you'll be at Medieval Times

Nope. I did installs when I was 18-19, and as stevew said...if you know he really had to do something special or extra for you...you can tip him. Otherwise...thats his job and he should be paid well enough to do it.

If he is good he is making DECENT (60-70k) money.
He'll be fine. but you'd be surpised how far a $5 will go if you ever need him back. |

There is no reason to tip a cable/sat installer. Our guys aren't really supposed to take tips even. Just offer him a soda (he probably will only accept a sealed drink (like in a can or bottle).

I wouldn't but I did tip the guy at Auto Zone the other day when he worked his butt of replacing the battery in my truck - I helped, but the bolts were heavily corroded and he had to go back into the store several times to get different tools and what not.

Our Directv service was down on 3 of the 4 boxes two weeks ago during march madness.
The guy came out, took down and adjusted the dish for 'optimizational apex', did some checking of the various receivers, and ultimately ended up changing out the main switch which was the problem. We were the first to change over to a 5 pronger dish in the area and the switch wasnt accomodating the upgrade. He was there for about 2 hours but certainly wasnt in a hurry. I ended up asking if he took tips and threw him ten bucks. These guys dont live off tips but I think there are times when its appropriate. The fact that I called the 800 number and had someone out the next day to solve the problem *during March Madness* was the big deal.
