Medical Question Regarding 3 yr old (possibly NSFW)

My 3 year old has recently started using the toilet standing up. Yesterday while he was in the bathroom he let loose a bloodcurling shriek. It turns out that he was standing up and the toilet seat fell on his penis. He cried like for about 5 minutes and then calmed down. I checked it out and it didn't look like there were any problems. He hasn't complained about it since.

A couple of minutes ago he asked me to help with the toilet seat, and I noticed that he has a black and blue line across the tip. I asked him if it hurt and he said that it didn't. Is this something I should take him to the pediatrician for, or is this just a run of the mill bruise?

It's probably just a bruise, but if that was my kid, I'd be taking him to the pediatrician just to get everything checked out and to be sure it was ok.

Probably just tissue bruising I'd expect - but I'd probably take him to the doctors just to be on the safe safe ...

Sounds like not a big deal if he's not complaining of anything. My three year old would have complained of the slightest discomfort. I would keep an eye on it but not run him in yet.

And my 1 year old constantly reminds me of just how "elastic" a young child's penis is. If all the stretching he does on the diaper table doesn't hurt, a toilet lid's nothing.

My wife informed me that our doctor's office has a triage nurse line, so I will call her and go that route.

Glad I am taller then a 3 year old. I have a toilet seat that likes to flop back down at bad times like that. I never even considered it could be life altering toilet seat to someone shorter.

Something similar happened to my son in 1st grade, he was going down a slide at work, and ended up going kind of sideways...the "edge" of the slide ended up pushing his underwear to the side and the zipper of his pants caused a burn/scratch up the underside of his penis. After called the nurse line of the Children's Hospital here in Atlanta, they advised me to bring him to the ER (by the time he showed me what had happened it was about 8 at night). I took him in and they rushed him through as a priority, said those injuries take precedence over other injuries because it's such a sensitive area, there can be damage "internal" that you can't see and it can cause problems when he's older.

I'm sure it's nothing, but better safe than sorry.

I would have it looked at. It is unlikely to be anything of significance but injuries to the penis/scrotum/testicles can be devastating if not diagnosed in time.

My son is 16 months and seems to find every possible way to injure himself though luckily not seriously to this point. I am sure that I will be soon dealing with a similar set of circumstances that you are right now.

Seriously, take him in.

I know he's only 3 years old but that's his junk, man. You don't mess around with a man's package. And he might be a little boy right now, but you have to understand that you're dealing with a man's unit. Because that's what it's going to be someday. And being 3 years old he's not even old enough to be embarrassed by a doctor looking at his equipment.

If there's nothing really wrong then at least you know. But if there is something wrong, do you really want to feel responsible for his insecurities later in life just to save 2 hours of your time and a $10-$50 (?) copay?

If you were watching a movie of your life and you saw that a toilet seat fell on your manhood when you were three and caused a discoloration would you be happy to see your dad just talk to a nurse on the phone and not have a doctor actually look at it to make double-sure?

i totally agree with olie and huckleberry...there can be damage that doesnt actually show up externally, just as with any other organ that exists internally.

I talked to the nurse and she walked me through what they would do there. She said it was a bruise and to keep an eye on it. If it causes any discomfort what so ever to bring him in.

The reason why I debated bringing him in was in December he fell off a barber's chair and had a HUGE knot on his forehead. The doctor looked at him for five minutes and sent him home.

Has he had any issues controlling himself to get to the bathroom, or any issues or pain when actually going? I realize he's only 3 and probably has accidents at this age, but I mean moreso than usual?

None at all. Aside from having me hold up the toilet seat for him when he goes now. I've asked several times how it feels and he says it feels good.

You'll likely have to do that until he's 18 after dealing with an event that traumatic.

Dude...take him in and have them look at it. That's his pride-and-joy you're talking about. The creator of your future grandchildren - do you really want there to be anything wrong with it that he can spend the rest of his life blaming you for??

Two things, first I wish I had a slide at work. All I have is a swing. Second, you might want to be careful about the child labor laws. A 1st grading having to work a job might not be cool with some people, even with that slide.
