Death crash band member charged

Police have charged the bass player of a band in relation to a crash that killed two of his mates last year.

Geelong heavy metal band Red Shore were on tour when their van veered off the Pacific Highway, went down an embankment and smashed into a tree near Coffs Harbour just after 7am on December 19.

They were on their way to a gig in Sydney after performing at a Brisbane club the previous night.

Lead singer Damien Morris died at the crash site and roadie Andy Milner died later in hospital. Three other men also suffered serious injuries.

NSW police this week interviewed bass player Jamie Hope, who was driving the van, and other band members. They also met the dead men's families.

A NSW police spokesman confirmed that Hope had been charged on summons with negligent driving causing death and three counts of negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm. He will face court on August 4.

The charges come as the band prepares for its first tour since the tragedy.

The band will play 24 shows across the country - including Coffs Harbour - from May 22, with Hope filling Morris' place as lead singer.
