Is CM really that good? I've never played any of them but they seem to have a HUGE following.

Whoa....Havok. Soon after it hits the US market, all these Hattrick posts will turn into CM posts times 2!

Mostly because of people's love for soccer here, but also because Hattrick isnt that great of a game

So..lemme get this straight...you did'nt like Hattrick so it is not a good game?

If that's the case...TCY is a horrid game.

However good Hattrick is, it isn't in the same league as CM. CM is the defining game in the genre. It's the biggest, the most refined, the most complex, and generally the best.

CM has online play but it is nothing like OOTP in that regard.

Agreed....but does that make Hattrick "not a great game"?

You can order it from the UK. There are several threads that discuss different places to order it from and prices.

Cool beans, when I get it in I will be gone for a week.

Hattrick and CM are two different games. Hattrick is much more simplistic and serves its purpose. At least with CM3, online or network play was quite trying, hopefully CM 4 will be better in this regard but I will not shed a tear if it is not.

I disagree with your reasoning. Many, if not most, of the CM fans on this site did not come to CM because we love soccer... we came to it because we love text sports sims, and CM is the best there is. Many, if not most, of us love CM not because it's a soccer sim, but despite that fact. Big difference.

As far as I know, CM is not a multi-player game. It supports "hot seat" multiplaying and LAN. But not liek OOTP where you host online leagues

Can't argue with that logic...thats why I got Hollywood mogul all those years ago, and have tried various text sims on subjects I know very little about (wresting/Hockey/F1) - I'm one of the fortunate ones who love Football and American Football (ok - as I'm currently living in your country, Soccer and Football) so it adds to my enjoyment of playing CM and FOF.

Havok, unless they've greatly increased online play capabilities, I would continue to look to Hattrick. But they're really not comparable games (other than they both are focused on soccer).

Hattrick is a simple, yet enjoyable online game that is geared completely towards online, casual (for most people) enjoyment.

CM4 is a very detailed, highly immersive text (and dot) based sim that is geared toward single person play and realism. But, at least up until now, I've never had much luck w/ online leagues - there's almost too much detail for that.

(Edit - Sorry Horns, didn't see your response when I posted).

I am guilty of that. After I played the first CM3, I found myself watching Fox Sports World and paying attention to soccer here and abroad. In this case, the sim got me interested in the sport itself, if for anything just to place a face on the name.

I even went to a Dallas Burn game last year and had a good time.

I can't wait. I'll be picking mine up with the next couple of weeks. This is great news.

I agree with Quik. I liked soccer before, but playing the game has definitely heightened my awareness of it. For others, I would agree that they didn't know, or didn't like, soccer beforehand but the quality of the game has made them enjoy it more, and perhaps even follow it.

The Cm Series is what addicted My friends and me to European Soccer(err football)

I don't think there will be another game like that in my lifetime that will make me want to follow another sport quite like The Cm series did. And for that reason i would like to thank Mark Vaughn and his staff..

I'd have to say CM had the opposite effect on me that it had on quicksand.

I found out about FOF through the CM boards. I had tried a couple of American sport sims before and found them lacking. W/o CM, I never would have found FOF and this board.

ditto for me. I still don't like soccer, but CM is by far the best text sports sim available. That's the reason I pre-ordered it a month ago.

I've always loved soccer. CM is, like people have said, the standard for text sports sims

Hattrick does nothing to satisfy my attention. I don't like it. I didnt say for anyone not to play it but its no where near CM. Its about the same level as Simcountry.

QS nailed it. Before last year, I may have watched 10 soccer games in my entire life.

Now it isn't shocking for me to watch 10-15 games a month if I have the time.

CM made me a fan of soccer. I agree with the person who said that there will never be another game which will have that sort of impact on me.

So were you trying to say that it "isnt that great of a game" or were you trying to say that it isn't as deep a game?

I'm still also not quite following what the reasoning was that made Hattrick not that great of a game.

If a European team is willing to offer him 750K as a 13 year old, I doubt the MLS can afford to pay him what he'll be worth as an 17/18 year old. My guess is we'll be able to do the loan thing ala Donovan at SJ.

As for Hattrick, the game is rather shallow and bumpy. Also, not being able to go at the pace I like, which is rather quick, is a huge negative. The ratings system is rather uninviting. Just a rather unpleasant game to me.

Of course, I dont like this board as much, outside of the fact it loads quicker

I would have to say that I have always enjoyed soccer. I have tried to watch as many world cup games as possible in the past. I do find US soccer rather unappealing, maybe because it isnt a great league. If I had digital cable, I could see myself watching the english premier division on a regular basis though.

One thing that CM did for me was open my eyes to how much strategy is involved. I had never really payed much attention to game strategy before, and playing CM took my enjoyment of watching soccer to a whole new level.

If that's the case, the MLS teams will simply be outbid in the long run. They won't be able to compete with a top flight European team that really wants him.

Question to Marc (or anyone else). I've picked up the guide (Primus?) with the game in the past. I wonder if it will it be worth it this year? In the past, I've bought 2...one very useful, one totally worthless.

I think the reason i love Hattrick so much is because its geared toward playing against "Human" opponents. As much as i love Sports sims playing against the computer just isnt the same. There's always a way to beat the computer over and over again. But you won't beat a human over and over again with the same tactic (unless he's a moron).

Its like Unreal 2003..... sure playing the AI is fun, but nothing compares to playing online.

Ah, but you see, CM studies your tactic and adjusts, to beat you the next time if you are foolish enough to try the same thing twice.
