I feel dirty - Swtiched from Cable to Satellite
I didn't want to do it, however in order to watch BYU football this year I have to because of the fabulous tv deal the MWC made with Comcast.
I had DirecTV back in 2000 and then they cut off all locals and ESPN due to negotiations in our area and wouldn't give me a time frame on anything. After two weeks I told them to f-off and swore I would never go back. But now, because Comcast made a deal to show the MTN on DirecTV, I have to, I am doing this kicking and screaming though. The win in all this is a happy wife. My wife is hating Time Warner and their interface. Comcast had a nice clean crisp interface compared to TW. Also, TW has dick for HD channels. I will be keeping TW for internet though.

If I could only convince my wife to switch. We spend $120 now for cable and internet after a full year of about $90 a month. The hike came just recently after our promotion period ran out. I thought it would be enough for her to allow me to switch over but nope....
One thing at a time I guess. I really want it mainly because of the BTN, which I'll have to price out anyways since it won't be included in the basic package anymore. |

Have had DirecTV for 10 years or so, if this is wrong I don't want to be right.

LOL! Well, They have the makings to run it this year, although I wear my blue tinted glasses a lot, I am not going to say it's going to be a cake walk like most of the homers are. BYU Blue is better than Ute Red!

Alright,
I am a convert....all the HD channels combined with the sports pack and Setanta Sports I am in sports heaven. I did nothing but watch Rugby all day yesterday and it felt good! I was pissed when Fox Sports World went to soccer only and I lost my Rugby, now I can watch it almost all the time!

I love Directv. You should tell them I referred you. We both would get a $50 credit on our Bills.

I am just about ready to pull the plug and switch from TWC to ATT's new cable service.

Of the options available in Western NY, Direct TV is by far the most reliable and most option filled way to go.

I would have switched to satellite years ago, if it wasn't for the high speed cable internet. I just can not downgrade myself to DSL. I have given serious thought to FIOS, but they are not in my neighborhood yet.

I took the hit without the package on my high speed. So I am running high speed cable internet and running satellite for t.v.

Did your cable company jack the price for only having internet? I am a little worried that Wide Open West will bend me over if I try to cancel the cable and keep the internet. |

I continue to wonder at this sentiment. How is having your own secure connection with (depending on location) upwards of 4-5 meg/s downloads a downgrade on a community access cable connection? For the security alone DSL is a better selection. Speeds are pretty much negligible if yer not miles from your phone transfer box. I can understand those that are a long distance away from a switch, but man, its hard to BE that far away these days. I am definitely interested in FIOS, though I'm not really sure I need it. I rarely every stress my DSL line and I've got upwards of 5 machines being used on my single line at any given time. |

We have Dish, and it sucks. It's storming right now, and I've been losing the signal on and off for about a half hour... and The Deer Hunter is about to come on, and I want to watch it happily.

I am a long way from the CO, about 2 miles, so no DSL out here. The whole neighborhood only has cable modem as a high speed option. I have a 10 meg circuit, and whenever I've done a speed test, it has never been below 9 meg, and often times it is around 12 or 13 meg. As for the security aspect, most cable modem providers have gone to the "virtual switch" solution. It is true that back in the beginning, a cable modem was basically like a hub, where everyone on the same segment could see everyone else's traffic. But, for the most part, the Tier 1 providers have solved that problem.

So you're blaming your sattelite service because there is a thunderstorm around? =) I get the same issues when a big storm comes through, but its never more than a few minutes as the real heart of the storm passes and most of the time I never see any outage at all. I'm happy to acept that in trade for not dealing with Time Warner and their worthless packages of shyte. |

*nods* I can certainly understand it if you're that far out. And I'm not sold on the "virtual switch" either, beenr eading about that at work (IT at a local college) its better than not having it in place but its also not very strong security either. Ahh well, enjoy =) |

I use my internet for work, I cannot afford any loss in speed. 4 to 5 down is a downgrade for me. Also, I do not have a phone line at home, so in order to get DSL, I would have to take on another bill with my phone company. |

Most of the geeks I work with have switched from cable tv/internet to satellite/dsl within the past couple of years. I'm a bit behind the times and I have a huge-ass tree blocking my satellite feed.
I would do it just for the cost and performance benefits alone. I pay $120 a month for crappy internet + decent TV. I could pay $90 for great internet and great TV (+ NFL Network) if it wasn't for nature.

My problem is Time Warner has MUCH better Internet than the BellSouth/AT&T fiasco that is DSL around here. If someone ever brings FiOS here, I'm on it...

I'm about to make my last payment on my 2 year agreement with DirecTV, and I'm considering testing the market. I see that Dish has an all HD package for $29.99 a month that'd give me pretty much what I have right now for half the price. Throw in the $5 a month for locals, and it's basically exactly half. (I may still have to add the $12 extra for HBO part of the year, but that'd be the same for both.)
Anyone have any experience with this DishHD Absolute plan? Am I missing something? It seems too good to be true. |

My cousin has the DishHD plan. He was more impressed with what I was getting from DirecTV, at least channel-wise.

I didn't really seem to notice any channels missing that I cared about, but your post made me think I could be overlooking something, so I decided to compare the lists. Here's what I'd be missing in the switch: Big Ten Network Country Music Television CSTV Fox Business Network FX MTV VH1 Nickelodeon Spike I didn't realize I'd be missing a couple of those, but none of them are very important to me. Of course, I'd also be missing any and all SD channels, which is why I guess it's only $29. Still, I think I will wind up going this route. 99% of what I watch is covered for half the price. |

Oh yea, also with Dish we don't get Fox Sports Network... which sucks. I went from watching the Reds every single day to having to log onto reds.com and following the gameday center... it's devastating,
