Cap Management Question

Alright. Here's the deal. I'm trying to resign a high profile player in one of my MP leagues before the sharks get to him. He's in his 5th year, last year of his current contract.

Current contract:

2.67Mil with 970K in bonus

desires a contract that looks like such:

9.3Mil bonus over 4 years(including the restructuring of this year)

YR1-1.17Mil(current yr)
YR2-4.95Mil
YR3-6.10Mil
YR4-6.97Mil

Not bad for a player of his caliber at his position of MLB. However, I'm a bit strapped for cash with 1.63 Mil under the cap left.

He's got a 99 Loyalty rating so he should accept a more cap friendly deal(in the GM's eyes). My question is how do I make it work for the current year to fit under the cap? I don't understand what's happening with his current payrate vs. new negotiated rate.

It looks like you can't at all without dumping some other salary. Assuming it's still the offseason, that contract he wants would cost you the following in this year's cap.

EXISTING BONUS: $.97M (You can't do anything to erase this hit. That money is already paid.)
NEW CONTRACT BONUS: $2.33M (9.3M / 4)
NEW CONTRACT SALARY: $1.17M

That's a total of $4.47M.

Further, I don't know what the minimum salary is, but $.97M + minsal (that's with no bonus whatsoever) is going to be close to or over your remaining cap room. So there's a chance that even if he would take no bonus contract (which he won't), you couldn't even offer him that and stay under the camp.

And this situation is even worse if the season has already started, since some of the current year salary portion would be paid out as well.

Look at reneging other players to open up cap space. It works really well, even at the end of a season.

Yes, Yoda. Fair point. I was operating under the assumption that he'd already done everything else to free up room. If there are renegotations still available, then that's definitely an option here.

Not that it changes the answer, but where in the season matters a good bit, too:

If in the offseason:
2.67m (current hit) + 1.63m (current free space) = 4.3m to play with (need to clear .17m)

If after the regular season:
.97m (current bonus hit) + 1.63m (current free space) = 2.6m to play with

Since the .97m is already counted, and then counted again in the new cap hit.

If you need to clear up cap room to sign one of your best defenders, i recommend clearing cap anyway you can.
1. clear up significant cap room - make a trade to clear up some space.
2. clear up minimal cap room - Find a reserve player making too much money and cut him for a rookie or someone that will sign for the league minimum. ie... backup mlb making 700k, cut him and sign someone for the league minimum. Then just have your starting mlb play 100%. you can do this with any position your strong at to clear up half a million usually. then resign your stud.

Just recently I was able to take a team that had 2.9mil cap space just before the bowl game and create over 10mil in cap space to resign 2 guys before they hit FA.

I got into it quite abit in one of my leagues with guys there that say that it wasn't possible, and yet I've done it time and time again.

You can create a good amount of capspace after the season, if you are smart on your renegs.

If you do it right (without any house rule), early renegotiations can keep the stars on a team together for just about ever. $10 million freed up? That's nothing. I've been able to free up $20 million or more on just renegs more than once, that's for sure.

We're in Week 15, so most of the salaries have already been distributed. Am I out of luck? Also does the Loyalty attribute get used in Free Agency or just renegs?

You aren't out of luck. You can reneg and get the salaries lower even on the last export of the season (the SB export), I've cleared up over 10mil in cap room on that export.

If you can frontload his deal you will save a significant amount on the future salaries. Also a year 4 voidable year can make a deal go through sometimes.
