The teams have been seeded from 1-32 based on the number of regular season wins they accumulated.
Each team will go with 4 starters in the playoffs. The starters are listed in the order that will be used. The order was determined primarily on the ERA of each pitcher during that particular season. Some changes were made. The rotation will not be changed once the playoffs begin. If you have a favorite team that you would like the rotation changed, let me know. The first round of the playoffs will be a 5 game set with the higher seed having home field advantage. The home field will rotate 2-2-1. I will use the defense and lineup that What-If recommends. I will also hold a pick-em challenge much like I did with the college basketball dynasty I recently completed. Send you entries to me ASAP via PM. Just pick the 16 teams that will advance to round 2 of the playoffs. Each correct pick is worth 1 point.

Is that the right Atlanta team ( 1995 )? It looks like they played 163 games. Wasn't that a strike-shortened season? I think there were only 144 games per team?

I think the strike shortened dodgers should be the 22nd seed if you prorate their winning percentage to 162 games or is it too late?

Too late henry. Good idea, but this was jsut much easier to do than calculating the win percentages.

I think this is a testament to how much people hate baseball now.. or is it just me?
I saw the 92/93 BlueJays teams, so I signed up. However, I hate baseball now. Football and Basketball have grown on to me. |

I'm in, too, how could I not be with the Big Red Machine on there?
Of course, having the '76 Reds face the '90 Reds in the first round is rough...

#16 1993 Toronto Blue Jays vs. #17 1991 Minnesota Twins
Game 1: Minnesota (Kevin Tapani) at Toronto (Pat Hentgen) In the second inning, Shane Mack gives the Twins a 1-0 lead with an RBI double that sends Chili Davis home. The score remains at 1-0 until Kent Hrbek smacks a solo shot for the Twins to increase their lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the 7th innings, the Blue Jays start to come back. Pinch hitter, Darnell Coles drives in Paul Molitor and the score is 2-1. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Paul Molitor strokes a single to center field that sends Roberto Alomar home and the game is tied at 2 going into the ninth inning. In the ninth, the visiting Twins steal game 1 of the series with a Chili Davis Home run and a Randy Bush sacrifice. Rick Aguilera comes on and records the save. Minnesota takes game 1, 4-2, and lead the series 1-0. Kevin Tapani gets the win. Game 2: Minnesota (Scott Erickson) at Toronto (Juan Guzman) Early in the game, the Twins score a couple of runs. Scott Lieus drives in Chili Davis in the 2nd inning and Kirby Puckett drives in Greg Gagne in the third inning. Suddenly, it looks like the Twins are going to take both games in Toronto. It is not until the bottom of the sixth inning that Toronto gets on the board. Paul Molitor singles to left to plate Roberto Alomar and the score is 2-1. The bottom of the 7th is a big one for the Blue Jays. A barrage of singles from the top to the middle of the lineup score 4 runs for the Toronto and they take a 4-2 lead, with just 2 innings to play. Duane Ward and Danny Cox each pitch a hitless inning for Toronto and they take this game 4-2. Juan Guzman gets the win and Danny Cox the save. The series is all tied up at 1 game each. Game 3: Toronto (Dave Stewart) at Minnesota (Jack Morris) Ed Sprague hits into a 2nd inning double play, but Molitor is able to score and give Toronto a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Pat Borders strokes a double and and Fernandez comes home to give Toronto a 2-0 lead. A couple more runs in the top of the 5th inning give Toronto a pretty comfortable 4-0 lead. We head to the bottom of the 7th where Chili Davis starts the inning with a solo homerun. Scott Lieus follows that up with a single, and Randy Bush walks. After a couple of outs, Gagne, Puckett and Hrbek each single in order to drive in 3 more runs and we have a tie game. In the top of the 8th inning, Toronto answers right back. Molitor leads off with a solo shot. A single and a walk put two runners aboard and then Stewart and White each get an RBI. By the time the inning is over, Toronto has regained the lead at 7-4. The Twins come up in the bottom of the 8th and keep make things interesting. Harper singles to lead it off, but Shane Mack strikes out for the first out of the inning. Lieus steps in and hit’s a double to left to score Harper. Gene Larkin then single to center to drive Lieus in and the score is now 7-6. Knoblauch singles and there are runners on the corners. Gagne strikes out and now there are two outs. Puckett steps in a drills a ball into the left field corner. He digs out a triple and 2 runs score. The Twins have taken a 8-7 lead. Hrbek singles to drive in an insurance run, but Aguilera doesn’t need it as he shuts down the Blue Jays in the ninth inning to give Minnesota the 9-7 victory and a 2-1 series lead! Game 4: Toronto (Todd Stottlemyer) at Minnesota (Allan Anderson) The Twins come out looking to take care of business and win the series at home. They score a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Kirby Puckett double. Kent Hrbek drives in 2 more runs with a double in the bottom of the third innings and the Twins go up 3-0. Meanwhile, Anderson pitched an absolute gem of a game. All told, he gave up 4 hits and went the distance in complete game shutout. The Twins take this game 4-0 and advance to the next round of the playoffs with a 3-1 series win. Here are the basic series stats for the Twins: Name-hits-at bats-ave-rbi Chuck Knoblauch 4/17 .235 1 Greg Gagne 5/16 .313 1 Kirby Puckett 7/17 .412 5 Kent Hrbek 4/16 .250 4 Chili Davis 1/14 .071 1 Brian Harper 3/15 .200 1 Shane Mack 5/15 .333 1 Scott Lieus 4/12 .250 1 Randy Bush 1/3 .333 0 Name--ERA-W/L/S Kevin Tapani 2.25 1W Rick Aguilera 0.00 2S Scott Erickson 5.63 1L Jack Morris 5.13 Terry Leach 27.00 1W Allan Anderson 0.00 1W And for the Blue Jays Devon White 4/17 .235 1 Roberto Alomar 4/14 .286 0 John Olerud 3/12 .250 2 Joe Carter 2/17 .118 0 Paul Molitor 6/14 .429 5 Tony Fernandez 4/12 .333 2 Ed Sprague 4/17 .235 0 Pat Borders 3/16 .188 2 Darnell Coles 0/3 .000 0 Pat Hentgen 2.57 Michael Eichorn 9.00 1L Juan Guzman 2.57 1W Duane Ward 10.78 1L Danny Cox 0.00 1S Dave Steward 8.63 Todd Stottlemyer 4.50 1L

As a side note. This is obviously going to be a fairly slow going dynasty. I have set up spreadsheet for each team's 8 or 9 batters and any pitchers used. Complete playoff stats will be kept for your (and my) enjoyment.

Series: #1 1998 New York Yankees vs. #32 1981 Los Angeles Dodgers
Game 1: Dodgers (Jerry Ruess) at Yankees (Orlando ‘El Duke’ Hernandez) The Yankees strike first in the bottom of the second inning when Jorge Posada drives in Scott Brosius with an RBI single. A Bernie Williams triple in the third inning push the Yankees out to a 2-0 lead. The Dodgers answer back with a run in the top of the 4th inning when Mike Scioscia hit’s a double and Dusty Baker scores from first. Hernandez gave up a total of 8 hits in 8 innings of work, but he did not allow another Dodger to cross the plate. Mariano Rivera comes in to pitch a perfect ninth innings and give the Yankees a 2-1 victory, and a 1-0 series lead. Game 2: Dodgers (Burt Hooten) at Yankees (David Wells) The Dodgers took a 2-0 lead by scoring a run in the top of the first inning and in the top of the 2nd inning. A Chuck Knoblauch double ties the game up in the bottom of the second inning, but the Dodgers tack on 2 more in the top of the third when Pedro Guerrero belts a 2 run homerun. The Dodgers lead 4-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Strawberry hit’s a solo shot and pulls the Yankees to within 1 run at 4-3. We go to the bottom of the 7th inning, where Bernie Williams bloop singles to center to score Paul O’Neill from third, and now the game is all tied up at 4. The Dodgers respond right away in the top of the 8th inning when Scioscia drives in a run with 2 outs. The Dodgers go up 5-4. Posada steps it up for the Yanks in the bottom of the 8th with an RBI single to tie the game back up at 5. At this point the game becomes a real marathon. The clock in centerfield strikes 2:30 AM as we head to the top of the 16th inning! With 2 outs, Bill Russell hit’s a line drive single to score Scioscia and the Dodgers have finally taken a lead at 6-5! Steve Howe is brought in to close the game for the Dodgers, but he never even records an out. The Yankees score two runs, and Daryl Strawberry gets the game winning RBI. The Yankees win 7-6 in 16 innings, and more importantly take a 2-0 Series Lead. Game 3: Yankees (David Wells) at Dodgers (Fernando Valenzuela) Game 3 turned into a David Cone showcase. He pitched a 3 hit shutout, striking out 9 and only walking 1 batter. Scott Brosius drove in the only Yankee run, but it was enough to give the Yankees a 1-0 victory, and a Series Sweep of the Dodgers, 3-0. #11 1995 Atlanta Braves vs. #22 1997 Florida Marlins
Game 1: Marlins (Kevin Brown) at Braves (Greg Maddux) The first three innings go by without any runs scored. In the bottom of the 5th, the hometown Braves draw first blood. Javy Lopez rips a double into left field which scores 2 runs, and the Braves go up 2-0. In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Braves double their lead with a 2 run shot by Ryan Klesko. The Braves go up 4-0. Maddux us still on the mound in the 8th inning, when the Marlins manage to score an unearned run on an error by Klesko. The Braves still lead 4-1 though. We head to the top of the ninth, and the Braves bring in Mark Wohlers to close the deal. Counsell flies out for the first out, but Renteria strokes a single. Moises Alou follows it up with a walk. Sheffield beats the throw to first for an infield hit and now the bases are loaded with 1 out for Bobby Bonilla. Bonilla rips a bases clearing double, and just like that, the game is tied at 4. Mark Wohlers is pulled and Brad Clontz is brought in. Conine, Abbott, and Renteria all stroke hits and drive in more runs. When the onslaught is finally over, the Marlins lead 8-4. Antonio Alfonseca comes in for the bottom of the ninth and shuts the door on game one. Marlins win on the road, 8-4 and lead the series 1-0. Clontz takes the loss, while Felix Heredia is the pitcher of record for the Marlins, and he gets the win. Kevin Brown pitched only 5 innings and let up 2 runs. Game 2: Marlins (Livan Hernandez) at Braves (Tom Glavine) Mark Lemke gives the Braves an early 1-0 lead on a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning. Jeff Conine ties the game up with an RBI single in the top of the second inning. In the top of the third, the Marlins get a sacrifice from Sheffield and they take the 2-1 lead. The Braves take the 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth with a 2 run shot by Klesko. The Marlins come right back in the top of the fifth with back to back RBI singles by Charles Johnson and Jeff Conine. The Marlins now have a 5-3 lead. The Marlins keep the Braves down until the bottom of the eigth, when they pull one run closer with another Mark Lemke solo shot. Rob Nenn takes the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning to save this game for Florida. Javy Lopez leads the inning off with a single. Blauser follows up with a single of his own. Jose Oliva pinch hits for the pitcher and he gets one by the right fielder for a game winning, 2 RBI double! Nenn did not record an out, and the Braves rally to win the game 5-4 and tie the series at 1. Alejendro Pena gets the win, while Nenn suffers the loss. Game 3: Braves (John Smoltz) at Marlins (Alex Fernandez) The Braves take control of Game 3 early on. Javy Lopez leads off with a triple in the 2nd inning and Blauser singles to get him home. Then Grissom slams a 2 run homerun to put the Braves up 3-0. Javy Lopez hit’s a 2 run homer in the 3rd inning and now the Braves lead 5-0. Just that quick the game was all but over. Smoltz gave out 3 runs to the Marlins the rest of the way, but they were spread out and never even threatened to get the tying run to the plate in the end. The Braves win 5-3, and Smoltz gets the win. Game 4: Braves (Kent Mercker) at Marlins (Al Leiter) Game 4 turned into a real pitchers duel. David Justice hit an early homerun to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. Mercker kept the Marlins shutout until the 8th inning, when Eisenrich hit a double, then was moved over to third on a sacrifice. Counsel then grounded out to first, but got the tying run home. Mercker stayed in and pitched the ninth inning, and kept the Marlins scoreless, so we get some free baseball. Dennis Cook is in for Florida in the top of the 10th inning. Jose Oliva is the pinch hitter and he grounds the ball to third, but Bobby Bonilla muffs it, and a runner is aboard. Grissom draws a no out walk. Lemke flies out and McGriff strikes out, so the situation is 1st and 2nd with 2 out for Atlanta. David Justice takes a big swing and his drive goes off the wall and 2 runs score. Mark Wohlers picks up his 2nd save of the series after blowing game 1 by striking out the side. Braves win 3-1 in 10 innings and take the series 3 games to 1. Braves Stats: Name-Ave-RBI Marquis Grissom .313 2 Mark Lemke .294 2 Fred McGriff .176 0 Chipper Jones .235 0 David Justice .438 3 Ryan Klesko .250 4 Javy Lopez .563 4 Jeff Blauser .231 1 Greg Maddux 0.00 Mark Wohlers 15.45 2S Brad Clontz 40.30 1L Tom Glavine 6.43 Alejandro Pena 0.00 1W John Smoltz 3.36 1W Kent Mercker 1.00 1W Marlins Stats: Craig Counsel .222 1 Edgar Renteria .250 2 Moises Alou .250 0 Gary Sheffield .231 2 Bobby Bonilla .500 4 Charles Johnson .231 2 Jeff Conine .235 4 Jim Eisenrich .133 Kevin Brown 3.60 Dennis Cook 3.00 1L Felix Heredia 0.00 1W Antonio Alfonsesca 0.00 1S Livan Hernandez 4.50 Robb Nenn 999.99 1L Alex Fernandez 6.43 1L Al Leiter 1.13

#4 1975 Cincinnati Reds vs. #29 1974 Oakland A’s
Game 1: A’s (Catfish Hunter) at Reds (Don Gullet) In the bottom of the first, the Reds make this one look easy. Joe Morgan gets an RBI single to start things off. George Foster gets a 2 out double to drive in 2 more runs and already it is 3-0 Reds. Don Gullet has trouble in the 2nd inning though, as he walks the first 3 batter to load the bases. He then strikes out the next two batters but gives up a costly ground ball to the A’s pitcher, Catfish Hunter. 2 runs score. The A’s close the gap to 3-2. In the bottom of the 4rd, the Reds get another run off of a Tony Perez single and go up by 2 runs, at 4-2. The A’s answer back with a run of their own in the 5th inning to make the game 4-3. The Reds come right back in the bottom of the fifth and put up a 3 spot to give them a 6-3 lead. The top of the 7th inning got very ugly for Gullet and the Reds. They gave up 5 runs, capped off by a 3 run shot by Mr. October, Reggie Jackson. That would be all she wrote for the Reds, as the Oakland A’s pull off a huge upset in Cincinnati and take game 1 8-6. Game 2: A’s (Ken Holtzman) at Reds (Gary Nolan) Game 1 pissed the Cincinnati Reds off, and Gary Nolan came out and took it out on the A’s. He pitched a beautiful 3 hit shutout, throwing only 88 pitches on the day for the win. The Reds offense really picked it up as well, scoring 8 runs. Johnny Bench was the man, going 3 for 4 with 4 RBI. That included a big 2 run shot to start things off in the first inning. Holtzman took the loss going 6 innings. The Reds and A’s are tied up at 1 game each now. Game 3: Reds (Pat Darcy) at A’s (Vida Blue) The A’s strike first in the bottom of the third inning when Reggie Jackson hit’s a ground rule double to drive in the game’s first run. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Reggie hit’s a solo bomb to give the A’s a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, errors by Joe Morgan and Pete Rose cost the Reds another run and now they trail 3-0. The Reds manage to get a solo homerun from Johnny Bench in the 9th inning, but Vida Blue goes the distance and the A’s beat the Reds, 3-1, and are just 1 game away from pulling off a very, very big upset! Game 4: Reds (Fred Norman) at A’s (Glenn Abbott) Once again, the Reds respond in a big way after losing a game. This one was a total laugher as the Reds just dismantled the A’s, 19-0. Yes, 19-0. Joe Morgan was 3 for 4 with 6 RBI and George Foster had 5 RBI. Tony Perez blasted 2 homeruns and and had 3 RBI of his own. Fred Norman went 6 innings for the win and Pedro Bourbon went 3 for the save. Glenn Abbott took the loss for Oakland. We now head back to Cincinnati for a decisive game 5, where the Game 1 pitchers will stage a rematch! Game 5: A’s (Catfish Hunter) at Reds (Don Gullet) The A’s draw first blood with an RBI double by Joe Rudi, followed by a 2 run homerun by Gene Tenace. A’s lead 3-0 early on. Joe Rudi sacrifices another run home in the fourth and the A’s are feeling good, up 4-0. Joe Morgan gets the Reds back into the game in the bottom of the third with a 2 run shot to cut the lead in half at 4-2. The pitchers take over for a few innings and it is not until the top of the 7th, when the A’s score again. Sal Bando gets an RBI single and the A’s go up 5-2. The Reds fight back in the bottom half of the seventh as Morgan and Griffey each get an RBI hit and not the Reds just trail by 1 run at 5-4. Ray Fosse hit’s a solo shot to give the A’s a bit more room in the top of the 8th. Oakland leads 6-4. In the bottom of the 8th, Pete Rose hit’s a double and that drives in 2 runs. Rose has tied the game at 6! But the A’s never give up and they score 2 runs in the top of the 9th inning to go up 8-6. Certainly a few of the hitters from the losing team could have stoeln the MVP award, but a lot of those stats were piled up in the game 4 blowout.
I think Blue Moon Odom, with the 2 wins and the 0.00 ERA (although in not that many innings, only 6.67) against that tough Reds lineup deserves the MVP. Reggie is the only other A would might get consideration. Alas, your Series MVP is Blue Moon Odom!

#15 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates vs. #18 1973 Oakland A’s
Game 1: A’s (Ken Holtzman) at Pirates (Steve Blass) The A’s draw first blood in this series with 2 runs in the top of the second inning. A dick Green double drives in a run, and then Bert Campaneris drives him home with a single. A’s lead 2-0. Ken Holtzman shuts the Pirates out until the 8th inning, when Bob Robertson drives in a run for Pittsburgh. A’s still lead, 2-1. Reggie Jackson hit’s a sac fly in the top of the 9th to give Oakland a 3-1 lead. Rollie Fingers comes in for the ninth inning and the Pirates go down 1-2-3. Game one is in the books and the A’s win, 3-1, and take a 1-0 series lead. Game 2: A’s (Vida Blue) at Pirates (Dock Ellis) Both pitchers are just un-hittable for the first 6 innings of the game. Finally, the A’sget back to back doubles from Reggie Jackson and Joe Rudi to take a 1-0 lead. Vida Blue continues to shut out the Pirates, and Rollie Fingers finishes the job in the ninth for his second save. The Pirates were held to just 6 hits, and the A’s take game 2, 1-0. They also lead the series 2-0 and we head back to Oakland for game 3. Game 3: Pirates (Bob Johnson) at A’s (Catfish Hunter) Game 3 is another pitcher’s duel. Catfish Hunter goes 7 innings before being pulled for a pinch hitter. Bob Johnson went a full 8 innings. Neither allowed a run, so the game goes to the ninth, and is in the hands of the bullpens. Manny Sanguillen hit’s a solo homerun in the top of the ninth for Pittsburgh, and Dave Giusti gets the save in the bottom of the ninth. The Pirates avoid the sweep by winning 1-0. Game 4: Pirates (Luke Walker) at A’s (Dave Hamilton) The A’s score first on a sacrifice in the bottom of the first inning and take a quick 1-0 lead. Richie Hebner answers for the Pirates in the top of the 2nd inning with a 2 RBI triple and the Pirates go up 2-1. The bottom of the 2nd sees Dick Green hit a 3 run shot to give the A’s a 4-2 lead. Dave Hamilton keeps the Pirates down until he is pulled for Rollie Fingers in the 9th inning. The Pirates get the tying run on 1st base with 2 outs. Jackie Hernandez gives one a ride, but it is caught at the wall and the Oakland A’s win, 4-2 and move on to round 2 of the playoffs! #13 1983 Baltimore Orioles vs. #20 Arizona Diamondbacks
Game 1: Diamondbacks (Randy Johnson) at Orioles (Mike Boddicker) Arizona scores first, but not until the top of the fifth inning. Damian Miller drives in the first two runs of the series with a double to left, and Arizona leads 2-0. In the top of the 6th inning, Reggie Sanders blasts a 3 run homerun to give Arizona the 5-0 lead. The Orioles finally get on the board in the bottom of the 7th inning, when Dan Ford triples and Eddie Murray drives him home. Arizona still leads 5-1 though. The Orioles get a couple more in the bottom of the 8th inning, but the real story of the day is Randy Johnson. He only allowed those three runs, and in the process he pitched a complete game, and struck out 17 Orioles! Arizona takes game 1, 7-3. Johnson gets the win, in impressive fashion. Game 2: Diamondbacks (Curt Schilling) at Orioles (Scott McGregor) The Orioles have to beat Johnson or Schilling at least once, but this time Schilling was just as impressive as Johnson was in Game 1. Schilling struck out 10 and only allowed 5 hits, as he pitches the complete game shutout of Baltimore. The Arizona offense was on fire as well, as they combined for 13 runs scored. Luis Gonzalez and Mark Grace each hit a homerun. Matt Williams also drove in 3 runs for the Diamondbacks, as they win 13-0 and take a 2-0 series lead back to Arizona. Game 3: Orioles (Mike Flanagan) at Diamondbacks (Miguel Batista) Complete pitching domination. The Diamondbacks unheralded third starter takes inspiration from the Diamondback’s big two, and pitches a complete game of his own, only allowing 2 Oriole runs, and striking out 7 in the easy victory. The Diamondbacks offense provided plenty of run support and took game 3 by a final score of 6-2. Reggie Sanders provided 2 homeruns and 4 RBI’s for the Diamondbacks, who sweep the series and move on to the next round of the playoffs. Yep, just like in real life I guess. Add to that stat line, that they combined for 34 strike outs in those 3 games.
I do think that the Batista performance was a fluke, and in a 7 game series, which we will be moving to shorty, you only have to steal 1 from Johnson or Schilling.

Thanks henry.
These writeups take a bit, plus I am tracking the basic stats throughout each series, which What-If does not do, so I have to set up spreadsheets. Having said that, I will be getting 1 or 2 more series done this evening, and should be getting 1-2 every other day on average.
