WWSM 08 Dynasty - Stade de Reims
Quote:
This is my first attempt at playing in France, so I'm not totally familiar with the rules and miscellany. It appears that there are two Cups, in addition to the League play: Quote:
Our team is expected to finish in the top half, and perhaps even challenge for promotion. |

Interesting that you would choose Reims, which Wiki correctly identifies as a truly great club of the past. They have struggled mightily however in the past decade or so.
I'll follow along, if only to see how Montpellier and Nimes fare. They are 2 other teams in league 2, both of them about 20 miles from where I live. Feel free to ask if you have any questions on french football, I'm no expert by any means but should be able to answer most common questions.

Formationally we're running a wide diamond. I make a lot of tactical adjustments, and use a lot of different styles, depending on matchup and weather, but the only time I change formation is sometimes to play a 4-5-1 in the closing moments to protect a lead.

Some comments about the roster:
At goalie, 29 year old Kossi Aggassa begins the season with a serious injury, leaving us with three options. 28 year old Johan Liebus will get most of the action, with player/coach Olivier Tingry (retiring at the end of the season) as the backup. 21 year old Mathieu Inthasane has been transfer-listed, but nobody's made an offer for him yet, so I may work him in some. Assuming Aggassa comes back from his injury ok, he'd be the best long-range option on the roster. At fullback, we will run out 24 year old Julien Ielsch on the left side, and 28 year old Alexandre Barbier on the right side. Both are more skilled defensively than offensively. In the center, the top pair will be a pair of veterans: 34 year old Flavien Burle, and 32 year old Jean-Christophe Devaux. 24 year old Brazilian Henrique will also get lots of minutes at DC, and versatile 22 year old Habib Balde will see action all over the defensive line. 20 year old Flavien Belson, on loan for the season, will be our DMC. 18 year old Lucas Deaux will be the backup; I'm curious to see how he develops. Another option at that position is 21 year old Nabil Hamzi. On the wings, we will feature 22 year old Nigerian Ali Yachir on the right side, and 31 year old Sylvain Didot on the left side. 19 year old Tunisian Mounir Hamzaoui is being retrained as an AML, and there are quite a few other options. Up front, 25 year old Julien Feret will lead the attack. It was his skillset that sealed the decision to play a diamond, as he's a very capable pure AMC. He should get buckets of goals and assists. 24 year old Nabil Taider will back him up. There are two talented strikers up front, 25 year old Yann Kermogorant, and 28 year old Cedric Faure. Both are combination fast/strong strikers, and both start the season hurt - Kermogorant for 1-2 months, and Faure for 3-4 months. There's not much behind them - 23 year old Shiva-Star N'Zigou is fairly pacey, and I found 34 year old Bruno Rodriguez lying around unsigned, but those two injuries are pretty devastating. |

There is an error in my last post - my top two forwards started the season with minor injuries, it was my starting wingers, Didot and Labbe, who started the season with serious injuries. Stupid neuro-pathologic malady! Anyway, this made the signing of Bruno Rodriguez fairly pointless, and also necessitated the signing of AM RLC Cédric Faivre. At the halfway point, and doing quite well:

In other news, we are still alive in the Coupe de France, and are matched up with fierce rivals CS Sedan-Ardennes in the next round. In the Coupe de la Ligue, we were eliminated in our first match, which was a bit of a bummer. My teams stats:

Positional roundup:
Goalie: Johan Liébus has gotten the majority of the action, and has played quite well. Olivier Tingry has fought a succession of minor injuries and has not made it off the reserve squad. As a result, Mathieu Inthasane has gotten the second string work, and has not done very well. I am not sure what his contract status is, but he is likely gone from the squad at the end of the year. #1 goalie Kossi Agassa is due to return from his injury shortly. Back 4: Julien Ielsch has been steady at DL, leading the team in appearances. He's one of those players who seems to always have some sort of confidence issue, but with a little encouragement he's done well. Team captain Alexandre Barbier missed a couple of months with injury, leaving the DR position to be covered by Habib Baldé and Basile Yehoumé. Baldé has filled in at all positions in the back, making him a semi-regular. The top two DCs, Jean-Christophe Devaux and Philippe Burle, have also missed quite a bit of time with injury, leaving the eccentric Brazilian Henrique as a first-teamer. Henrique is probably gone from the squad after the season, as whenever he's benched for two games in a row, he complains to the media about his playing time. He has played well when called upon, though. Midfield: Flavien Belson and Lucas Deaux have shared time at the DMC position, and probably will continue to do so - but in key games, I'm going to have to go with our loaner Belson, as to date he's outplayed our homegrown prospect. AMC Julien Féret has an astonishing 18 assists in 15 games, and probably twice as many offers to purchase him. He's been everything I hoped he'd be. At the wings, I'm still a bit unsettled - Didot has played well since coming back from injury, but on the right side neither Labbe or Yachir has done much. New signing Faivre has been ok, but I'm just not seeing much offense from those spots. As long as Feret continues to roll, its not an issue, and its not like they've played badly. At the forward spot, Yann Kermorgrant has led the way with 16 goals and 5 MoMs, although Cedric Faure, with 10 goals, has seemed to me the more consistent of the two. I've not had to go to the backups much, but Bruno Rodriguez has 4 goals in 8 games, and Shiva-Star N'Zigou has 3 in 4 games. We've stayed well under our wage budget, and have hardly spent a dime in transfers, but we're leaking money. The board says finances are ok, and I guess they would know. Mostly they're quite happy with my management so far, most pleased with our 4-1 smashing of rivals CS Sedan-Ardennes, and most disappointed with our early Cup departure. |

At goalie: Toganian Kossi Agassa (30) started last season injured, missed half the season, played brilliantly when he came back before fading badly down the stretch. He'll get first crack at the starting job. Johan Liebus (29 yo) was one of the best goalies in Ligue 2 last season. He'll get plenty of action this year. Inthasane is just 22, but didn't play well last year, and doesn't really figure in my plans. Joffrey Marie (15) is the best prospect I've got.
Left Defense: Julien Ielsch (25 yo) was a workhorse at DL last season, playing nearly every game for my team. This year he'll share the position with Bosman signing Marco Randriana (24 yo) of Madagascar, who spent last season with Chamois Niortais. 21 yo Vincent Bedouer has been loaned in, but looks to be strictly an emergency option. Right Defense: 29 yo Alexandre Barbier is once again team captain. He's backed up by the unhappy Johann Truchet (24 yo). Central Defense: We've almost a complete makeover here, as two of our top three from a year ago have moved on, and 33 yo Jean-Christophe Deveaux is now a 2nd stringer. A pair of Guineans now make our top unit: 23 year old Habib Balde has been promoted to first team, and 21 year old Alseny Camara has been added from Toulouse FC. DMC: 19 year old Lucas Deaux split time last year with a loanee, and now the job is his. His backup is 31 yo Didier Neumann, added from Montpellier Herault SC. ML: 25 year old Nabil Tadier has been promoted to first team. There are a number of other good options here - we may be rotating as many as 4 players through this position. MR: 21 yo Loris Arnaud is on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, and is far and away our best option here. 27 yo fan favorite Cedric Faivre will be the backup. AMC: 26 yo Julien Feret is back at the top of the diamond. Some of his ratings have slipped a bit in the off-season, which is worrisome. 21 yo Joffrey Bertolino is the nominal 2nd teamer, but in reality Faivre or Tadier would take this position in case of a long term injury. Fast Striker: Shivou Star N'Zigou signed with a low level French team, leaving us with 26 yo Zahir Zerdab to back up 26 yo Yann Kermorgant. Zerdab was pretty bad in limited opportunities last year, and won't see the pitch much unless things go very badly. Strong Striker: 29 yo Cedric Faure ended up leading the team in goals last year, and I expect him to do so again this year. 29 year old David Suarez was signed on a free to back him up, and 35 yo Bruno Rodriguez is also still around. |

At the halfway point of the 08-09 season, we find ourselves in the danger zone:
Code:
Code:
I've added a few players on loan to help out the midfield - German Thomas Broich, Paraguyan Julio Dos Santos, and Frenchman Aimen Demai. We're still alive in the French Cup as well. Attendance has been pitiful, and finances are bad, but a stadium expansion which I didn't realize was going on is just finished, so maybe things will pick up on that front. Goal #1 is to STAY UP. |

2009/2010 Preview
Goalkeeper: 30 year old Johan Liebus of France has emerged as the clear #1 keeper for the squad. He's consistent and durable, and a very strong ball handler. Kossi Agassa, from Togo, is the backup for now. Liebus signed a new contract in the offseason through 2012. Agassa's deal runs out at the end of this year. I'm unsure of what to do with him - he's played brilliantly at times, but in both seasons he's seemed to lose focus down the stretch. 23 year old Frenchy Mathieu Inthasane is also still around. We have a new feeder club: Mashuk-KMV Pyatigorsk, in Russia. I may send Inthasane to the soviet for a spell, see if he can impress me. There are a couple of decent looking prosects on the youth squad, but nothing too interesting. Fullback: 29 year old Frenchy Alexandre Barbier has held down the right side of the defense for two seasons, as well as serving as team captain. On the left side, 26 year old Julien Ielsch was re-signed. He fought off a job challenge from 25 year old Madagascar native Marco Randriana last season. Randriana is still around, and again figures in my plans. Also in the mix is Ibrahim Kargbo of Sierra Leone, added from Dutch club Willem II. Kargbo has great pace, and is said to relish the big matches. 22 year old Frenchy Basile Yehoume is still around as well, although he hasn't been able to break into the first team. Centreback: 22 year old Guinean Alseny Camara led the squad in appearances last season, and was generally quite solid. Like Ielsch, he is a good team player who does not relish the big matches. Also from Guinea, co-captain Habib Balde is one of my best young players (22). He's a good team player, with a high work rate, very consistent, with no real weaknesses. We have added 2 23 year old Frenchmen; Anthony Losilla, solid in the air but slow, and Jean-Christophe Vergerolle, a good team player who relishes the big matches. 35 year old Jean-Christophe Devaux has been released. DMC: 20 year old Lucas Deaux played very well last season. He's an aggressive tackler, and very athletic. Once again he'll be backed up by 32 year old Didier Neumann. Wings: 26 year old Nabil Tadier got most of the action on the left side last year. He's very athletic, although prone to picking up cards. He'll be pushed by 23 year old Moussa Sow, added as a Bosman signing. On the right wing, we've added 24 year old burner Seid Khiter, who I've got high hopes for. 28 year old Cedric Faivre is also still around - he filled in at all four midfield spots a year ago. AMC: 26 year old Julien Feret had a disappointing debut in Ligue 1, after being our player of the year my first season. He'll get first crack at the AMC position. In general I may look to strengthen my midfield with loanees, as I did a year ago. Forwards: Cedric Faure is 30, has led the team in goals the last two seasons, and has in general been my best and most consistent performer. He'll once again be the top man up top. Yann Kermorgant has departed for Portugal, so we have added 25 year old Nicolas Raynier, from Amiens SCF. He's got great skill, and I've high hopes for him. 30 year old David Suarez was a huge disappointment last season, but he's still around and may contribute. Bruno Rodriguez has retired. To replace him, I've signed 30 year old Mamadou Bagayoko of Mali. We are expected to again bravely fight off relegation. |

Several players have apparently "boomed" in the offseason - Nabil Tadier, Marco Randriani, and Julien Feret. AS Nancy-Lorraine is offering 2 million Euros for Randriani! Additionally, I've managed to land some good talent on loan for the season. My loanees:
DMC Omar Benzerga, from LOSC. 19 years old, probably won't have much of a role here. He's really just an emergency option, to be honest. DRC Garry Bocaly, from Olympique de Marseille. 21 years old, no real weaknesses, tremendous team player. Can fit in at fullback, central defense, on the wing. Might be our best player. DC Romain Bregerie, from Girondins Bordeaux. 22 years old. An aggressive aerial demon. DC Dorian Dervite, from Tottenham. 20 years old. Good in the air, but poor football intelligence and injury prone. May not get much run, as we're suddenly quite deep on the back line. FC Lucas Jutkiewicz, from Everton. 21 year old Polish big striker, will get a look. AMRC/FC Lebohang Mokoena, from Schalk. 22 year old South African. Blazing speed, ok skills. AMC Miralem Pjanic, from FC Metz. 19 year old Bosnian, giving me ridiculous depth at the AMC position. Very skillful player. And my notebook, with top XI and second XI: Code:
I've added a second affiliate, Real Oviedo in Spain. Inthasane has been loaned out to them, joined by Basil Yehoume and Didier Neumann. David Suarez was asked to go as well, but he refused. |

Note that with all these additions, only four players in the top XI are carried over from a year ago: GK Liebus, ML Randriana, AMC Taider, and MR Feret. Randriana was a bench player.

I've been more active on the transfer market this season than ever before:
Code:
I've added two young goalkeepers, and loaned Aggaso out to a Ligue 2 squad. Also, Ibrahim Kargbo turned out to be a disaster - playing badly, not showing up for training, etc. So he was outright released. This leaves me a little thin on the left side. |

And a look at our team at the end of the season:
Code:
Notes: Ielsch spent the season on loan in Belgium. It looks like he played well. Camara did not take a step forward in his second season with the club. He'll be back, and he's still young. Bocaly, on loan from Olympique Lyonnaisse, is actually the French U-21 captain. He played very well for the most part, mostly playing DR, but also DMC and DC. Would love to get him for the long term, but probably not realistic at this point. Faure led the squad with 18 goals. His contract is up, and at 30, will not be invited back. He had a good run with us. Yehoume spent the season on loan in Spain, and played quite well. He's out of contract and won't be asked back. Taider was expected to take a step forward, but didn't. He was very inconsistent. Neumann and Inthasane both spent the season on loan in Spain, neither fits into my plans at the moment. Balde continues to hold down the DL position - he's fought off all sorts of competition there. He can play anywhere on the back line, so even if he's not a star, he's somebody I want to keep around. Bagayoko was second on the team in goals. He was only signed for one year, and won't be back. He's a good player, but he's a 30 year old striker. Lucas Deaux was solid at DMC. He's a bit limited, but he's still only 21, so there's some upside. Julien Feret, like Taider, was expected to improve, but didn't really play any better. He had some injuries down the stretch. At 27, time is running out if he's going to be a star. Johan Liebus emerged early on as the clear #1 goaltender. He's signed through 2012. Chouard was one of several players who spent the season in Spain, playing for Real Oviedo. He's not likely to ever play for Stade de Reims. Losilla was a rotation player at DC, and was ok at times. Marco Randriana did play pretty well, although he had some issues with injuries. He'll be back. Kossi Agassa was loaned out to a Ligue 2 side, and is soon to be out of contract. Pjanic was one of my loaners, and actually played quite well, emerging as my favorite at the AMC position. I'm going to see if I can get him for the long term. FC Metz has a contract with him through 2012. He has a good relationship with Taider. Barbier was pushed out of the lineup by Bocaly, and really struggled as a reserve. He's 30 years old now. Vergerolle was in the mix at DC but never really got going last year. I expect more from him in the future. Martin Hansen was signed away from Liverpool. He's 19, Danish, and considered to have lots of potential. He played well at times, but also struggled with minor injuries. Nicolas Raynier backed up Feret at the MR position. He was ok, I may expand his role next year. Moussa Sow struggled with injuries and never really got into the groove. He's got loads of promise - he'll be back next year, and there's room for him to emerge at the striker position. Seid Khiter also struggled with injuries. Like Sow, he'll be back next year, and will be expected to step up. Faivre was a reliable backup in the midfield. He probably won't ever be a starter for us. Mokoena was loaned in for depth, and was rarely called upon. Hamzi is now out of contract. I never did find a role for him. Marco Ferreira was signed a year ago, but has had some serious injuries, and has never had any impact. He'll be let go. Jutkiewicz was a loaner who turned out not to be needed. Ngamukol is a generic young winger, now out of contract. He got into a couple of games when the injuries piled up, but really isn't needed. Cheikh N'Diaye is a 25 year old Senegalese goalie, that I picked up when Hansen and Liebus both had injuries. He has some promise. Bergerie is another loaner who turned out not to be needed. Mourlon is one of my young goalies, who got into a Ligue game when there was no other option. He doesn't really have much promise. Dalla Valle is a young Finnish striker I picked up from an Italian team. He looks good, and he's just 18. Mohammed Shawky is an Egyptian DMC I picked up from Middlesbrough. Him and Dalla Valle I forgot to register, so they weren't able to play Ligue games. Hamzaoui is a generic young winger, now out of contract. |

Note: My signing of Mamadou Bagayoko gets noted as the LIGUE 1 SIGNING OF THE SEASON. Bagayoko is also selected as the fans player of the year. He was great in the first half of the season, invisible in the second half. My choice for poy would have been Garry Bocaly.

Worksheet, top XI and second XI:
Code:
Liebus, 31, returns as the top goaltender. My workbook says N'Diaye, 24, should be the #2 goalie. I may loan Hansen out. Inthasane is under contract for another year; he will likely be shipped off to Spain again. There are 6 U18 goalies - I should probably get rid of at least two. Code:
Gregory Vignal, 28, is a defensive minded player I signed on a free. My plan for now is to have him and Ielsch split time. Code:
I'm a bit thin over on this side - for now I'm planning on moving Balde over to the right side (not his natural side), and have him and Barbier split time. Code:
Vergerolle and Losilla, both 24, will start the season as the top centerbacks. I've transfer listed Camara, as he's been a bit disappointing, and I'm a bit over my wage budget. Nivaldo is a Brazilian I signed for cheap, he'll serve as the primary backup. Code:
Code:
Shawky's attributes are impressive, and he's fresh off the World Cup stage. If he doesn't pan out, Deaux is still around, and Taider is an option as well. Code:

Lauri Dalla Valle has been loaned out to Kaiserslautern, a German 1st Division side. Hopefully he gets significant playing time. I've listed both backup goaltenders for loan - whichever one gets taken first, the other I'll keep around.
Johan Leibus is named team captain for the second year running, with Feret as assistant captain. When good players are available cheap, there's usually a reason - and my DMC Shawkey is already making noises about wanting to move to a bigger club. You've played ONE game for us! You're not going anywhere! Well, his morale remains good, despite his media manipulations, so he'll stay in the lineup. I've been keeping the wage bill at about half the budgeted amount, but the last two seasons I've increased it quite a bit, and right now we're over by @ 300,000 Euros/year. This has the finances a bit shaky, so the board has gone out and found us a parent club from the Spanish 1st Division. Last bit of news, Garry Bocaly has returned to Stade de Reims for a second season on loan! This shores up our DR position, as well as providing cover for DMC and DC, and makes our team in general look a lot stronger. |

Midway through the 2010-2011 season:
Code:
Diabate leads the squad with 13 goals (Lovenkrands second with 10). Diabate and Feret are tied for the lead with 5 assists. Diabate, Liebus, Lovenkrands, Feret, Ielsch, and Pjanic are the top regulars, with average ratings over 7. Shawkey was shipped out to Derby fairly early - the combination of his drama plus weak finances necessitated the move. He's been replaced with a young Frenchman, Herold Gouton. |
