AVG update breaks foreign versions of Windows XP

I don't know how many of our foreign users use Windows XP and AVG, but beware of a recent AVG upgrade, it accidentally detects an important windows system file as a virus and if you choose to delete it (or AVG is set to delete it automatically), it will cause Windows XP to break.

As far as I know, this only affects the Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish language versions of Windows XP.

Happened to my wife's brother yesterday and i had to fix it for him, the deleted files were winsrv.dll and usr32.dll.

I also use AVG and XP but didn't have that problem as my windows is in English language (as it's all my software, i don't like it in Spanish).

same for me, I never switched my PC to French, even though it came with conversion disks. I always find that I have a much better shot at fixing bugs by searching the net in English...

I have had customers that had AVG break some of their other programs as well, which is why I have switched them as well as myself, to Avast!

I work for a company that develops a different antivirus package, but I try to never "sell" that here because I am sure people don't come here for me to beat them down with ads.. Plus it costs money and more people here likely would just go with something that is free (if anything at all).

I actually didn't mean to come across as bashing AVG.. they have had issues, but everyone has at times. I feared bashing AVG would actually possibly convince more people to not use antivirus software at all, which is an even worse mistake these days. I just wanted to get a warning out to any one who this might affect is all since this one could be kind of nasty.

Yeah, I know you weren't bashing. It is a legit issue. I was just passing on an alternative because you are correct...you gotta have something.
