TCY Recruiting Hard-Starting Lineup
I play Virginia Tech and have a house rule that I can only recruit in Virginia and none of the top 10 prospects in Virginia want to visit Virginia Tech and my prestige is 86.
Do you think my house rule is tough? Did Virginia Tech have a non-Virginia starter that played for them in 2008? |

Yes, their running back was from Indianapolis. I believe several of their defensive backs may have been from Florida (although, they are not recruiting much there anymore).
Typically, Tech gets most of its talent from in state but its not unusual to see good players from NC, MD/DC, PA, WV, KY or TN on their rosters from time to time. I would suggest VA and 300 miles of B-burg (I don't know if you get all of VA within 300 miles and the parts you would leave out are the areas they recruit heavily in). Just my 0.02. |

I like the spirit of that rule and I've tried a similar thing with Rutgers in NJ. My suggestion however, is to loosen it slightly by allowing a few top recuits from out-of-state per year if you ever want a chance to compete for a national title.
Or you can make a more complex rule that takes dwardzala's comments into consideration: Virginia Unlimited 300 Mile Radius 2 recruits 1000 Mile Radius 1 recruit So about 1/5 of your team will be out of state and probably 2/5 of your starters. If 2 guys are comporable in ability at the same position I would implement a bias in favor of the VA guy to squeeze a couple more home grown boys into the lineup. Or better yet, set up a system for allowing more out of state recruits based on performance. After all, if VT won a national championship there would be more top out of staters interested in coming. If they won back to back titles, suddenly guys would be visiting from California. Nothing too extreme, but make some small allowances. As you've probably already figured out, you need to fight hard to keep your academic rating up since you can't offord to let that 98+ guy with a 2.30 gpa and 820 SAT to leave the state. I would give slightly more time for academics are be very quick to release any walk ons that arent academically gifted. You need the 3-pronged recruiting assualt of PREST/ACAD/DIST becuase it is cyclical and some years everyone in VA might be (DIST)/ACAD or ACAD/(DIST). The good thing is you can get a lot of the recruits to come even (if their preferences arent a perfect fit) if you get those scholarship offers out quick (week 1 and 2). Go VT! I live in Richmond and hear and read a lot about Va Tech recruiting. Beamer has said he focuses on VA first, with Georgia, NC, SC and WVa as his next best areas of interest. He recently (as in the past two years) switched from Florida to Georgia as his primary out of state interest area.
Take it for what its worth to you.
