So I've played EU2, EU3 plus expansions, Victoria, and Hearts of Iron 2.
I know Crusader Kings focuses a lot on your royal family, is there still a fair amount economic management and warfare? And compared to some of the other Paradox games, are there a lot of historical events ala EU2/HOI2 or is it less deterministic ala EU3? |

There's some economic management in the whole build stuff and manipulate tax and donation sliders and the like, but not anything heavy duty. Warfare is mostly general Martial skill and troop types, plus numbers and technologies, with a morale thing built in. The actual warring itself isn't what takes a long time, it's the traveling to and from regions and sieging that can take forever, especially if you don't research siege engines. Some generals' traits can cause certain events to fire IIRC, but overall, it's a fairly streamlined, basic model itself. (from what I remember of vanilla CK BTW. Been a few months since I've played) CK is -completely- undeterministic. You'd get crazy things like the Muslims going north and stuff in the vanilla CK, like Ireland and Scotland north. They made some drastic changes in DV I think to prevent that from happening, though I forget what they are because I was never interested in DV before.

I bought it and just started downloading. It's very unlikely that I wouldn't get $10 worth of enjoyment out of a Paradox game.

As I recall, there was an issue with save games causing vassals to want to do some crazy stuff, like Irish barons pledging to some eastern potentate. I always had to use a workaround that revised the save game file to stop that from happening. There may be a patch for it by now.
The game was good enough that I played it for several weeks despite this problem. |

Actually this would sometimes happen as a part of the game engine - because of the complex entanglement of alliances, and the fact that your vassals could be part of wars that you were not a part of, you'd see them bite off more than they could chew and have to sign their souls over to some strange Polish duke, or whatever. |

I'm pretty sure it was more than that. I remember vividly my last game, where the lords of Devon, Cornwall and Kent changed allegiances from the minor King of England to some Muslim leader in Turkey. It was pretty screwy. I'm sure that it has since been fixed. I recall so vividly because the Pope was so grateful that I "encouraged" both Devon and Cornwall to come back to the faith by joining the Kingdom of Ireland. |

Since I don't know much about world history, I think vassals doing crazy things is awesome. I would love it if a guy just lost his mind and signed a 20-year contract with the Clippers. Games need stuff like that to keep me entertained.

A lot of the really weird stuff with the muslims was fixed in DV. One of the major problems was some northern euro kingdom getting into war with the muslims, and the Islamic Doom Army would march unmolested through all of christian europe to attack the enemy. Now they can't just march through christian lands. |

The vassal problem from what I hear was largely fixed with later DV patches.

I'm up to 1100 and doing pretty well as the Duchy of Toscana. Duchess Mitelda told the King of Germany to kiss off and became fully independent, picked up a number of vassals (up to 8 now) and am slowly pushing the Arabs off the Italian peninsula.
It's a pretty fun game so far, glad I picked it up at the price. Thanks for posting the sale Izulde. Last edited by Big Fo : 04-03-2009 at 11:53 PM. |

It's too late for that, she had a son that is now Duke of Lower Lorraine, Brabant, and Saxony plus count of half a dozen places. He is also #1 on Matelda's successor list. I have the "no heir" pop-up in the top right corner of the screen. I was hoping that I was just waiting to play as a superduchy with provinces all around the Rhine, Belgium, and Northern and Central Italy. Now I'm afraid my game will just end. If so I'll have to load the save as Lower Lorraine and play as the son. edit: I should add that Matelda's husband (who fathered the Duke of LL, B, + S) is dead and she is currently unmarried in her 50s. What happens if you just "die" the sons?

If you kill every last one of the heirs until no one's listed in vanilla CK, a sucky country cousin with the same last name takes over. DV, I don't know.

I thought I remembered the same occuring in DV.. but it has been quite some time since I played it. CK + DV is better than Vanilla CK in my opinion, but I think I got spoiled by EU3 + its expansions. After playing that, every time I have gone back to CK.. I just lose interest. I think it has to do with my playing style though as well. I get far less into the roleplay aspect, and more into well.. not sure what I get into.. but it is not the roleplay aspect CK is great for people who really enjoy getting into the personalities and characters of the game. EU3 is more about nationbuilding which I guess is my thing. |

Just on related note, I picked up EU3 with both the In Nomine and Napoleon's Ambition expansions for $9.99 total at Best Buy recently.

Yep, I believe $9.99 is the permanent price at Best Buy for EU3+ expansions (if you can actually find it there). I still play a weekly game with Barkeep in EU3. other than some technical issues a while back, one of my hilights of every week still is looking forward to that weekly game.

I found the same package at Gamestop recently. I'd already bought EU3 long ago but getting both expansions was much cheaper that way. |

I'm having trouble ordering this from their site. Maybe I should just go with EU3 at Best Buy instead?

I went back not too long ago and played a bunch of CK. But eventually it felt like nothing new was happening and the challenge of keeping a large kingdom together (I controlled all of the British Isles, plus had a foothold in Spain) became less a challenge and more a tedious burden. |
