I am looking to buy FOF4, but would like to get some opinions from some of you that already have it. Is it worth having over the others in the series? What are the pros and consof the game?
Thank you in advance. |

It is the best game in the series. I am not the best person to talk about pros and cons b/c my computer has been out for a while, so I have not really gotten into it.
It is different enough from the other versions that I think that it is a worthy upgrade. I think that this board is a critical bunch, so you may get the impression that people do not like the game. I think that you will find, however, that it is one of the best text based sports games out there. The best part, for me, is the realism of the statistics. |

Some actually consider FOF2001 to be better. I like FOF4 for the opportunity to play with custom-made player files and historical rosters.
The interface is a little clunky, but the realism and the accuracy of data is the best out there. I found myself deep into salary cap hell recently in my game and had to do a roster purge much like the Ravens a couple of years ago... salary cap management is very difficult, and combined with realistic contract expectations from the players makes FOF4 the number one text football sim available.

I have all in the series but the first (and 2002). Each is a bit of an evolution for the last, but not always an improvement from the last depending on what you like.
In FOF4 I enjoy the richer depth charts and deeper gameplans, along with apparently improved player development logic. If this sort of thing does not interest you, an older version would probably do. IF 2001 and 4 had not come out I would still happily be playing FOF2.

There are also a lot of "small" improvements in FOF4. Things like the team summaries and scouting screens, etc. The only thing I'd consider a major improvement would be the play calling. If you expect a major game change, you'll be disappointed IMO.

What about program crahses? I have read many a person having that problem. Was that just when FOF4 was released, or is it a continuous problem? I am pretty sure that I am going to get it, but I just want to know what to expect as far as problems, etc.
Thanks again for your input. |

I have never seen a crash either.
I pretty much agree with what has already been said. Each version of the game can stand alone, but FOF4 is the most well-rounded of the bunch.

Good point. Make sure that you have the RAM under the hood, otherwise, it will take a long time to run. |

I have to say I like FOF4, but I think the biggest statement is the fact that you will be hard-pressed to find anything but faint praise. No one is championing it as the greatest thing ever.
Yes it's got a few nice updates over FOF2001, no it isn't particularly groundbreaking. |

I love the game. I just go in and play and take it for what it's worth, a game. It's not the NFL but it isn't supposed to be. It's a game based on football. Most of the NFL rules are there. It's worth the money. I haven't had any crashes since the 2nd patch.

I love it. I have posted many threads with ideas to improve the gameplay or work out small bugs, but overall I think its great. I think there is room to improve it, but I think its better than the previous versions.

I like it as well, definitely better than FOF2, which was my last Solecismic product.
