Rules Question

While checking the career statistics of my players, something that I thought strange struck my eye.. I pulled out the log file for the game in which it had happened and found this:

Pittsburgh: Five-Receiver Spread formation, strength is left. The defense is in a 43 with nickel personnel and 2-deep bump-and-run coverage, expecting the pass.
2-10-PIT01 (4Q: 06:38) Alvin Murphy ran inside the left guard for 10 yards. Tackled by DT Bill McDonald, assisted by S Raymond Heinrich. Key block delivered by Geoff Willingham (<-- RG).

Nothing too obscure on the first look.. except that good old Alvin is (and has been, since he was drafted..) my starting OLT *coughs* Makes me wonder what kind of setup my guys must have used from that 5 WR Spread to make the OLT eligible to carry the ball..

Although I do have a setup where my TE is the 5th WR in the 5 Wr Spread..

Any ideas? And yes, I know.. it was just a strange roll of the dice.. but just pretend You would read the description given above in a real play log for a real NFL game..

Does he have a carry in the rushing stats?

Maybe a bug or the QB fumbled the snap and this guy picked it up?? *guesses*

Yep.. he has.. that's the reason why I took that look at the log file

And no.. as You can see in the part of the log supplied, it was an ordinary play, no fumble.. Bug.. maybe

Got something here from the official NCAA Football rules for 2009.. (.. should be the same for the NFL, right?!?) I always thought only players eligible to catch a ball were allowed to carry it forward, if it wasn't fumbled.. but:

Handing the Ball Forward
ARTICLE 6. No player may hand the ball forward except during a
scrimmage down as follows:
a. A Team A player who is behind his scrimmage line may hand the ball
forward to a backfield teammate who is also behind that line.
b. A Team A player who is behind his scrimmage line may hand the ball
forward to a teammate who was on his scrimmage line when the ball was
snapped, provided that teammate left his line position by a movement
of both feet that faced him toward his own end line and was at least two
yards behind his scrimmage line when he received the ball (A.R. 7-1-
6-I).

So formation was a normal 5 WR Spread it seems..

Soo... QB in the Shotgun.. the Snap.. LT turns around, makes two steps away from the LOS - about two yards, that is.. - QB hands him the ball.. LT turns again, runs through the hole provided by LG and C, gets a helping block from the RG... and is brought down after 10 yards.. hmm... and all that fun at a 2nd and 10 on the own 1 yard line.. *coughs*
I'd pay money to see a play like that in a real NFL Game

sometimes if you get injuries and players have to sit a play due to END screwy stuf like this can happen

It happens particularly in the 5-WR set.

Can you upload the file with the game log? For a league called TEST0001, it'll look like
TEST0001x.yyyy

Where x is the week (including exhibitions - so 5 is Week 1 of the regular season), and yyyy is the year.

what Chubby said.

I've had a case like yours in the past where my LT had a carry. Be creative and think of it as Fridge Perry lining up in the backfield.

I've also just had a play in the CFL where the QB threw a pass to himself...down the field for a 7 yard gain too.

I like my version better - it's more exotic

Hmm.. that doesn't happen that often, right? Brett Favre managed something like that on his first NFL pass - but without any positive yardage.. seems Your guy should be even betten than Favre then.. so.. keep an eye on him..

In real life a kicker from our local team once caught his own onside kick.. nice, high arced kick.. it wasn't a situation where the opponents would have expected an onside kick.. and it was his decision, not the coaches' and he said, he was very lucky that it worked out well and would have got an earfull if it hadn't

If so, keeping an eye on him won't be hard. Ever getting him out of the game will be the difficult part.

...yep, there wasn't anything funky with the alignment that I can tell, and it wasn't a bug in the display. The game log has the LT position making that run, not the LT subbed into someplace else.
