Changing player positions in TCY

Hi, everybody. I have a couple of quick questions about TCY.

I'm coaching a team that has several good young players at guard and is thin at offensive tackle. I'm thinking about taking one of the guards and moving him to tackle.

How much of a talent hit will a player take if I move him from OG to OT? I'm not making much of a change; real college teams move O-linemen around all the time. I'd expect the effect to be fairly small, but is that actually the case in TCY? I'd hate to take a future star guard and doom him to four years of stinkage if I switch him to tackle.

And, would the position change be easier for a freshman than it would be for a more experienced player? I'm guessing that a younger guy would have a better chance to develop his talents than a junior or senior.

Click to make the position change and it prompts you to confirm. In this confirmation box it gives you an estimate of what might be changed: "player will retain 93% of their rankings" or something like "player will retain roughly the same rankings"... something like that. Occasionally, rarely, they even get better.

If you don't like the prognosis, cancel. No harm no foul.

You can also just play the guard at tackle and he will gain experience at that position I believe lessening the drop they may take if they changed positions officially. And players can handle other positions without making a confirmed change if they are in the right weight range like you propose in making a guard into a tackle... however, logically, don't try making a cornerback into an offensive lineman or having them play out of position there.

I'm pretty sure TCY doesn't have the prompt that tells you what percentage of ability will be retained. The penalty for moving from guard to tackle will probably be pretty steep, as well. I haven't had too much success changing player positions in TCY. Also, the changes will be permanent and you can't get the original bars back if you try to change back.

Thanks for the replies. I redshirted him this year anyway, but I'll need him--big time--next season. I'll try playing him at tackle and see what happens. If he's getting schooled, I'll have to try something else.

Now I'm thinking about an even bigger position change: moving a true freshman from OG to DT.

The TCY help file mentions that there's a better chance the player will respond positively to the position change if his weight is close to the average weight for players at his new position, and since the dude weighs 266 pounds, that shouldn't be too much of a problem. It's not like I'm moving him from WR to DT.

He will also have plenty of time to learn his new position. I'll almost certainly redshirt him even if I don't change his position.

How huge a talent hit do you think the player will take? I don't want him to end up turning into the equivalent of a walk-on DT, because I've already got a couple of those.

The player will probably be worthless after making that change. Position changes just don't work well in TCY. Think of them almost as last minute stop gap choices. Like, "I'm 1 short on WR for the game to let me set my depth. I'll change a walk-on CB to WR to make the limit," type thing.

That's what I was afraid would happen. Consequently, I'm not going to have the player change positions. He's a scholarship player who has the chance to be pretty good at guard; possibly a starter as a junior or senior. If he would have equivalent potential at DT, I'd need him more there, but I have enough interchangeable, replacement-level D-linemen already. I sure don't need another one.
