Worst cover song of all time?

Is there a worse cover song than "American Pie" by Madonna?....

I don't know if you can call it a song, but William Shatner reciting the St Crispin's Day speech from Henry 5 over bad lounge music is way worse.

I'm curious to hear what Mariah Carey does to Def Leppard's "Bringin' On The Heartbreak." I'm guessing I will be horrified.

On the radio the other day, I heard some chick singing "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House. Screw that, you don't re-do a masterpiece.

Anyone hear the Avril Lavige (sp?) live version of "Chop Suey", originally preformed by System of a Down. It's painful to listen to but worth a download....

I don't even know who the band is, but someone covered "I'm Sorry Miss Jackson" and it is absolutely terrible...I always have to hear that song at work...ugh.

OK, if you've got RealPlayer installed, and it's been at least 30 minutes since you ate lunch, you can GO HERE to see and hear Celine and her friends sing "You Shook Me All Night Long".

I agree with Craptacular, her version of "You shook me all night long" is the worst. Ygh. *twitches*

I was going to say the Celene Dion cover as well.

William Shatner doing "Tambourine Man" was pretty awful as well.

Mariah Carey doing "Heartbreak" was nowhere near as terrible as I thought it would be

Shatner's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is worse.

Sadly, I have both on LP.

Who was the guy who remade "You Don't Own Me." Was that Billy Idol? You know, the one with the line that says "Dont' say I can't go with other boys."

How sad is this...

Sixpence None the Richer covered "Don't Dream It's Over". And yes, they sucked the emotion right out of it, didn't they?

Big Mountain covered the "Baby I Love Your Way/Freebird" medley. I remember this only because it was on the soundtrack to Reality Bites.

I just want to know if the Dixie Chicks were aware of the Smashing Pumpkins cover of "landslide" when they redid it.

And my vote for worst cover has to be Mr. Big's "Wild World" by Cat Stevens.

I've always liked cover songs so I downloaded the two Avril songs. Basketcase is pretty good because the instruments were louder then she was. Chop Suey, however, is right on par with Roseanne singing the National Anthem.

I loved the original (yes, I remember when it first came out) and actually thought Ugly's cover of it was pretty good.

I didn't like REM's cover of U2's One but I'm sure the ones listed here are worse but I refuse to even try to find out. It gives me the creeps to think of Dion covering AC/DC (talk about taking bad music and making it far worse).

Not really.

Elton Johns cover of Lucy in the Sy was not good.

I wasn't very fond of Aerosmiths cover of Come Together. It's not bad, but not as good as the original.

Another newcomer is Celine Dion's "I Drove All Night." Cam is right though, listening to the new "Don't Dream It's Over," I just sat and listened to it wondering how you could cover it with so little emotion. Harsh.

Best cover that I suspect most people here have never heard is a Beatles cover by a live side-project called 801 that featured Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera. Their take on "Tomorrow Never Knows" (called "TNK" on their album 801 Live) is a great remake of the original.

I know a lot of people hated it, but I thought the Cure's cover of "Purple Haze" was great. I appreciate covers when they don't try to mimic the original, but instead re-make it in their own image. For example, it's pretty much a lost cause to try and out-do the guitar work of Hendrix's songs, so you may as well emphasize something else that follows your own strengths.

I'm with you. I thought Ugly Kid Joe's version actually added something to the song. There was some anger there that wasn't there in the first song.

American Pie by Madonna makes my ear bleed. I'm waiting for Yanni to play The Backstreet Boys Greatest Hits so I know how soon the world will officially end.

The Rolf Harris cover of Led Zepplins 'Stairway to Heaven' is the worst I can remember.

Yes this is the Australian Rolf Harris of such fame that he sang 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport', 'Jake The Peg' and other such Classics.

I also liked the Ugly Kid Joe version of the Harry Chapin classic song, but then again I just like the song.

Also really hated the Whitney Houston cover of the Dolly Parton song (I forget its name)
