3-4 WLB Blitzing .. Nickle
Ok, I understand that in my normal 3-4 package - the WLB is part of the regular pass rush. Which, at first glance, I assumed - 'look for a LB with stud pass rush ratings', and some play diag.
Then I started game planning, and roster setting and stumped myself. See, I did just that. And, my WLB is terribad at everything else. So, I am concerned for my nickle set - Is he going to cover in the nickle, and get smoked ? Or is he still going to be a full time pass rusher ? |

Pretty sure that even in the nickel package, the WLB is simply a pass rusher. I have long been completely comfortable using a PR-only guy in that slot, and ignoring coverage skills.

Hmm, my question is, how do WLBs accumulate "passes defensed" and "passes caught on" stats, if they rush on every play?

Three ways...
1. Sometimes they're backups at other positions. 2. Sometimes DEs have coverage responsibilities on short/screen passes (both irl and in FOF). 3. If they're slotted in the dime package, they are in coverage.

WLB rushes the QB in 3-4 and Nickel. WLB plays coverage in Dime.
