apparently its a middle school team. I'm surprised no one grabbed him as he walked through the middle. lol. Legal?

lol, watched that a good dozen times until I saw the best part, towards the end where he gets knocked on his ass by a teammate in the celebration. hehehehe.
Cool play. Will never work again on any level now. ![]() |

I am 100% percent sure my kids would have de-cleated him and told him to leave that mickey mouse stuff at home. Ball moves - destroy.

Read about this in a high school game about 20 years ago. Never seen it done before...but my team gets a look at something like it once every two weeks. I give them all sorts of goofy situations where someone might try something like that. We will hit them first and ask questions later. The first time I run it against my defense it works. After that I almost always end up with someone putting their facemask into my side.
And yes, that's a legal snap.

The great thing about that play is if the defense was awake and hit him when he was being all casual there, they probably would have been flagged/ejected.

Bad coaching, you're putting a kid in a spot to get completely destroyed for the sake of trying a trick play.

I agree I have always said the worst thing a youth football team can do is score a TD - because it convinces them they did something right. 95% of the youth TD's I have seen have been a combination of great individual play and poor defensive tackling. rare is it because of good scheme and good blocking. |

My kids would have lit that ass up. That being said I have 30 page playbook of trick plays. My favorite is the double hook and ladder.

A trick play in the context of the game is one thing. This gimmicky shit is another. Like was said earlier, what are these kids learning if it can get pulled off successfully? At least with a hook and ladder or some other real in-play deception, kids are learning about sticking with their roles, discipline, blocking, etc.

I call it thinking outside the box.
I rather like it when a trick play uses, you know, trickery. |

The weird thing to me is, I'd have expected those two plays to have opposite outcomes.
The kid starting to walk straight up the middle of the field should've been clobbered right off. Why is he advancing the ball? The kid jogging toward the sidelines, I'm surprised the other one had the presence of mind to hammer him. |

I think someone on the defense should've pulled out an axe and chopped the quarterback's head off. This isn't two-hand touch. Let's prepare these kids for the NFL now. Football is war.

I've gotta say that I wish they'd play Seether at more children's football games.

Not a trick play and not on topic but I figured this would be as good of a place as any to post as it doesn't deserve it's own thread.

I thought the Browns trickery vs the Patriots this weekend was pretty cool.

Yet more trick playery. The coach was ejected for this one.
However, if you look closely, they seemed to avoid a false start penalty on #50. |

Any action or verbiage used to deceive the defense into thinking that the ball is not about to become live is illegal.
That covers the 5 yard penalty play above, the "wrong ball" trick, the play at the end of "The Longest Yard" and, in my opinion, pretending to run a player off the field only to snap it and throw it to him. The Browns receiver play is nifty but definitely not illegal. We've ran a few plays like that over the years.

From Deadspin--
The purported No. 1 high-school football team in the county lost the Texas state championship because of a fifth-grade sandlot-game "dead man" ruse. So, they're really not the No. 1 high-school team in the country after all, are they?

I caught some of the Euless Trinity-Pearland game. That was a crazy trick play, definitely not something the top team in the nation should've allowed. That being said, Pearland shredded Trinity's secondary the entire game and is a deserving Class 5A, Division 1 champion.
43,000+ in attendance BTW, beating the 41,000+ mark from the Pearland-Katy quarterfinal matchup from two weeks ago. |

It was a sealed deal when the DL got on their knees, but the sheer lack of response from the defense after the hike is inexcusable.

Feel badly for the defensive back, though. He was the only one who responded at all, but he had no chance to make the play.

USC tried this back in the day when Marinovich was the QB. He got under center and then backed out and started walking toward the sideline with his arms up like he was confused. Then the center direct snapped to the halfback.
I personally don't have any problem with the trick plays. As far as teaching the kids, trick plays help teach creativity, outside the box thinking, and brains over braun or something. It also teaches the defense to be prepared and not to take things for granted. I'm guessing that the naysayers probably booed when New Orleans went for the onside kick or when Hickory High ran the picket fence. Last edited by judicial clerk : 12-19-2010 at 07:13 PM. |

Was at this game. I guess it is ok to use them, I mean I am ok with onside kicks but, it seemed a little bush league. Love it when I get to watch 3 state championship games in Cowboy Stadium for one price.
