Effect of contract on retirement
Have Tom Brady in his 14th year, and he is in the last year of his contract. He wants an extension for one year that would pay him 14 mil next year, 7.5 mil of which would be bonus. I certainly want him to come back, but with the franchise tag for QBs at 7.3 mil, I'd obviously prefer to get him at half the price.
My question is, will an extension mean he is more likely to re-sign? Might be worth double to get him back for a year. Thanks! |

I don't think it matters, I'm pretty sure that the decision whether to retire is weighted mostly by the player's age.
Could be wrong, though. |

I think it is one of several factors (age, contract, playing time last year, maybe some others).

I don't think he's more likely to return if you extend him. In FOF players often retire after signing an extension, even a couple of stages before (the bastards). They just take your money and run.

Hmm, so is some small benefit worth risky 7 mil? Probably not.

Is the signing bonus 'dead money' if the player retires?

Err, I don't think so, I think his bonus is accelerated just as if you released him.

I cannot verify that this is actually implemented properly in game, but I am certain that Jim indicated he had done exactly this in one update/patch along the way somewhere. |

giving bigger bonuses to older players, and not being scared to reneg them every year. thinking of 12 year safeties like mcintyre in ccfl, for example
he'll end up getting all his money, but if he retired in year 1 of the deal, youd be off the hook for year 3 |

I wonder if EXP isn't weighted more than age. I think I heard that somewhere before, but it would make more sense to me if age were the bigger factor. Then, these things don't always make sense. |

FYI, no contract, but decided to come back. Only one QB in the league older than him, so probably only back for a year, but fuck it, that's not a bad thing.

If he wants to hold out on the Franchise Tag, just sign him to like a 5 year deal with hits as small as possible the first two years.

Going to wait until he takes a hit in TC, then re-sign him.
