Fire and Forget Fantasy Baseball

So I used to absolutely love fantasy sports. Was pretty much obsessed with them. I'd have 3 or 4 teams for every sport. Lately, however, I have almost completely lost interest. I'll stop paying attention to a team after just a few weeks. So I had an idea - how about a team that I didn't have to pay attention to?

The idea is this: you draft a team, and then there are no transactions. All year. No adds, drops or bench players. You get the fun of the draft (with maybe a different strategy because of the rules), and then you don't have to worry about keeping up on the team throughout the year. You also don't have to get irritated because your chief competition is playing someone who stopped caring about their team three months ago. You may get completely destroyed by injuries...that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

I know that this is completely and totally contrary to what most people enjoy about fantasy sports, but would anyone be interested in this sort of thing? I'm thinking larger active rosters (to help mitigate potential injury problems), no bench, head to head scoring and then no transactions all year. Something like so:

2 of every infield position (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS).
2 flex IF slots (1 1B/3B, 1 2B/SS).
6 outfielders.
2 Utility slots.
6 starting pitchers.
4 relief pitchers.

That's 20 total position players and 10 pitchers.

W - Sv - SO - ERA - WHIP, R - HR - RBI - SB - BA scoring categories (5x5).

Let me know if you would be interested in this sort of thing. I'm thinking a Tuesday or Wednesday night draft, if we get enough interest...and enough interest would be at least an 8 team league.

I'd also probably be open to allowing trades...but no adding/dropping or roster juggling. The idea being to minimize the amount of maintenance a team would need over the course of the season.

If we can do the draft Tuesday at some point, that would be the best day for me (if it is a live draft, that is). Other than that, as long as the draft is over before 10 pm EST I can be there.

Ok, sounds like we have enough people. Tomorrow evening work for everyone for a draft? What is the earliest people are available? I'm free as early as 4:30 Pacific.

Same here. What site will be using for the draft, and what type of draft, out of curiosity?

The earliest I can start is 5:30 PST and that is pushing it for me, but schedule whenever and if I can make it I will.

I'd be fine with that 4:30 - 5:30 Pacific start time, worst case I'll pre-rank some guys.

Max of 12 teams, draft is tomorrow night at 7:30 PST (earliest I could get it that wasn't before 4:15 PM). If we need I'll pull in some people from outside if we don't fill. Sign up!

Hopefully with this being an online draft of a smaller size it will go pretty quickly...I'll likely be able to able to stick for an hour or so before getting to bed, auto draft at the back end will be fine.

I'd be interested if somebody else joins so we can keep an even number of teams.

I'd be available this evening.

If I'm still the 9th team, just boot me come draft time.

Bump, two hours until the draft. Still have 9 if another person want to join to even it out.

I ended up having unexpected plans and got home near the end of the draft.

The Utley autopick sucked, but getting Clayton Kershaw made up for it.

I signed off and set it to autopick with a few rounds left because it was close to midnight eastern, queuing up my ranked choices for the last RP slot on my roster. I got Kuo, but the problem was Yahoo (unaware of our rules I'm sure) then selected RPs for me the rest of the way. So I have 3 RPs on the bench and voids at C, MI, and Util with no way to fill them. Anything we can do about that? Maybe turn on waivers/FA just for the next couple days so I can take care of this, and also give those who couldn't make the draft a chance to round out their roster with guys they'd like?

Will post a review of my team later.

Sadly some unexpected plans came up and I also missed the draft. I'm going to see if I can turn on waivers/FA until Friday so people can fix their rosters.

I'll check again when I get home in case it's an iPhone issue, but it doesn't look like I will be able to modify the settings. I should have thought about this and just limited the transactions to 3 or something.

At the moment, it looks like we better get to work on trades. I'll update you all this evening.

Trading won't work either, as we'd just be creating one hole for another (since no one else is short RPs). Looks like there's one other team missing a MI.

You may as the commissioner be able to place players on teams and take others off teams if you are unable to change the settings, but as the season has yet to start, I'm thinking it may just be the mobile version that is not allowing you to do any of this.

I got home in time to make sure I filled all my positions, thankfully. I mean, 2B will be a void for at least half a season, but I don't have any empty spots.

So I've managed to make it so that we can have 4 roster moves over the course of the season. I think I'll leave it there all year, so we have SOME injury flexibility. If there is mass hue and outcry, I'll turn it off Friday night.

Sadly, everyone is a free agent already, so it's going to be first come, first served for players instead of waivers here at the beginning.

Vote here (or on the message board) if you really want to eliminate all transactions after Friday.

I don't think 4 roster moves over the ENTIRE season is going to make or break anybody's season.

Either way isn't a big deal, but I'd vote for it to be turned off tomorrow. If they are left on, I see the settings are currently set up to allow 4 moves per week which might need to be changed.

4 moves per week is a different restriction than the total moves allowed. I made it that way so we could use the 4 moves we had - otherwise we'd be allowed 4 moves on the season, but 0 per week. Which would be silly.

I punched in our current rosters to ESPN's draft analyzer, to see what they have for predicted finish, in a roto format. Should be interesting to see how different the end results are.

No, the number in parentheses is your projected total with hitting and pitching added together (10 points for best in each category, 1 point for worst). You'll see that the numbers to the left of the yellow categories add up to that figure. So with 46 you're projected at 9th out of 12. I'm 4th behind Everybody's, Schmidty, and Votto.

Well, just past halfway through the season, in a format I'm liking, here are results if this were a roto league.

Interesting to see who has been getting lucky and unlucky in their matchups thus far.

5th is definitely better than the experts predicted me, and I feel like this team could do better. I don't think we can win the league, but I think top 3 is possible.
