Can't We All Just Get Along?

Just got back from pulling two of my employees away from each other's throats.

It's been brewing for a few days now. It's like I have two factions of employees that do nothing but antagonize each other. Then they come to me and expect me to take sides.

It'd be a lot easier if any of these people didn't do a good job. Is it that hard to get along with people? I mean, I hear the petty bullshit that they are fighting over and I want to send them all back to Kindergarten.

And I hate to sound sexist, but it'd be a lot easier if women weren't so fascinated with gossip. What the hell? Who cares if that guy's girlfriend is a slut?

Then again, as a farmer, if I don't want to work 7 days a week I need to put up with this.

We have a guy that insists on walking on the right side of the aisle way...which is fine. But if you don't, he shoulder checks you into the wall like Terry Tate.

My experience both with friends/girlfriends/wives and coworkers is that the Chris Rock line about how "every woman has another woman at her job who wants to DESTROY her" is very often true. I have never in my life felt like someone at a job was "out to get me" but jesus christ 80% of the women I'm friends with it sounds like they're lucky to make it through any day alive with the backstabbing and traps their female acquaintances have laid for them..

Err, And I hate to sound sexist too.

First place I worked after leaving college was a small printing company. Not long after I started we had the Christmas company meal, all employees invited. As we left the restaurant a car screeched up, guy jumped out of the passenger side and rushed towards us wielding a golf club (probably a driver, could have been a 4 wood). He was heading right for the company owner, a hugely fat arrogant asshole, but some office dweeb type stepped between them and took a driver swing to the head instead, hit the floor out cold. Golf club boy dropped the club, ran back to the car and they zoomed off.

The knocked out dweeb came back around being tended to by the company secretary, the most opposite sex attention the office dweeb had seen since moving out from his mother's house. Apparently golf-club-boy and his driver (the car driver, not the golf club) were disgruntled ex-employees who had been fired a few weeks before I started there. For some reason neither the police nor an ambulance were called.

About a week after the incident a friend of golf-club-boy came to the company and asked for the golf club back. Got to admire the nerve.

Yes, generally speaking, it is.

Plenty. Several female employees who fought with other female employees. A few times it got physical and I had to step in between them (dodging flying fingernails and scratching). LOTS of crying and screaming. Usually centered around boyfriends, gossiping or disagreements with grudges always held. Never had that with male employees.

Not saying guys didn't argue with each other, but it's never become physical or out of control. Those were always dealt with right there and ending peacefully. I've gotten in several shouting matches with my boss over finances, but we always agree to disagree (hate the cliche, but that's what it was). Usually the guys just disagree and walk away without the argument escalating beyond that.

It never came to physical blows, but shit sure hit the fan tonight as I had three people walk off the job.

Good riddance. Time to bring some fresh blood in.

The company I work for, we do workshop sales.

Our commissions are team based to eliminate the cut throat mentality but the promotion tier is all numbers based.

I have seen guys picked up off the ground by their necks for stealing a deal. I have seen shouting matches, chest bumping and shoving...I have yet to see a fist fight, but it has come close several times.

You have to set an example even in the face of stupidity. Everybody who reads comic books knows that the Kirby Silver Surfer is the only true Silver Surfer. Now am I right or wrong?

Couldn't let this go unnoticed
