Now here is a quick question....think this promotion is to catch Sony with their pants down and get a few new converts? Or trying to get the soon to be College crowd?

Apple does this every year with the iPod Touch (rumored to start next week).

It makes a lot of sense for them since it encourages young people to buy, gets them into your ecosystem where they will spend more money (games or apps), and helps clear out inventory ahead of fall refreshes (at least in Apple's case they always refresh the iPod Touch right after the end of the promotion).
