The "I Can't believe I've never seen this movie before!" thread

When you see a movie for the first time that you think is awesome (or even merely like) yet it came out some time ago, post it here and your reactions.

One I just saw:

Dog Day Afternoon - Holy crap what an intense bank heist movie. Al Pacino gives one of the best performances I've ever seen him give. No gimmicks, nothing, just intensity. Really like the "crowd" as a character in this movie. I kept thinking of Reservoir Dogs watching this. Wouldn't be surprised if Tarentino got the idea for his film watching this.
Easily now in my list of favorites. Great Charles Durning too...and very young Carol Kane.

I just watched Donnie Darko for the first time a few days ago. It's been on my Netflix list for years and I kept pushing it down in favor of other movies. It was pretty awesome. Very strange movie.

And since you've mentioned that Dog Day Afternoon is a bank heist movie, it goes right to the top of my netflix queue.

Dog Day Afternoon has an interesting plot...very anti-establishment 70s feel! I really enjoyed it!

Been a couple of decades since I saw it, but I remember it being an excellent film.

I never realized that the dude who played Fredo(also in DDA) only made like 6 movies and then died of cancer. The twist with the Pacino character is very interesting, and I never saw it coming.

Definitely do...the way that film builds is total genius. A very simple film too. Not stylistic at all.

I've had the DVD of Donnie Darko for years and never watched it.

I will have to do so VERY soon.

Oh another film to mention here is "Taxi Driver". More disturbing than DDA. Very much dislike deNiro's character...holy crap.

NOw THERE's a stylistic film. Love Scorcese's cameo.

The sixth movie (Godfather 3) used archive footage, and it was also nominated for a Best Picture award.

A few years ago my roommate made me watch Miller's Crossing. Don't think I had ever heard of it before, but it was right up my alley.

Ya, that comes to mind for me too. I remember the trailers of this movie on old VHS tapes I had back in the day - I must have seen the trailer 100 times. Finally got around to seeing it and it was awesome, though I did have to go through the imdb message board afterwards to make sure I wasn't missing anything in the story.

My film class instructor was a cop and she said they watched DDA as an example of what not to do in a hostage situation.

John Cazale was saved from his Righteous Kill/88 Minutes career path at least. Would anyone seriously pay to see Pacino in a non-mafia/Scarface role these days?

I actually just watched 3 Days of the Condor for the 1st time a few weeks ago, and it was amazing, loved almost everything about it. I recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. A fun thriller.

Another Robert Redford movie I saw for the first time was Brubaker, where Redford plays a warden trying to reform a prison. Really good flick

+1, I had an 80's drama night a month ago and watched Brubaker and Ordinary People. Both really good. Heh you never know where Morgan Freeman is gonna turn up.

Only thing about Brubaker, I didn't really like how it ended...or at least it didn't really seem to have an ending.

Watching DDA again. and Awwwwwwww John Cazale has a line in it. In answer to a woman asking him why he doesn't smoke, he replies, "I don't want the cancer."

As for non-mob Pacino films, my favorite Pacino film is Glengarry Glenross where he's a real estate salesman. I also really like Author Author.

ah yes. liked him a lot there too. Stone kinda ruined parts of that film with his typical BS and Diaz stunk but all the football stuff was awesome and great cast.

Back in February me and a buddy took a road trip to Tombstone, Arizona. As we were eating lunch in one of the saloons, they had a western movie playing on the TV. I pointed out to my buddy... 'Hey, that's Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell.' He was stunned that I had never heard of the movie.

Needless to say, when I got home I finally watched Tombstone and it was a great movie.
