Sad Day

I just found out a colleague of mine was killed last night in a freak accident. Details are a little unclear, but here;s what I was told. Her dog got loose and she took her car to get the dog. When she returned, somehow her car moved or rolled forward after she got out and crushed her between the car and either a tree or the garage.

She was an older woman, nearing retirement, and she leaves behind her husband and two children. She had a falling out with her daughter-in-law and she hadn't spent much time with her grand children in a few years. Now her grandchildren will grow up not knowing much about her.

It's just all so damned random. My six year old was close with her, almost a surrogate grandchild. Now I've got to figure out how to tell her that Ginny is dead.

So sorry for your loss. I have had to deal with that several times with young children (including my own), and it is difficult. Just be as honest as you can (meaning, to the level they can understand), but don't be vague. "She is resting" and "she has gone" are very hard for kids to understand, and can easily be misunderstood by them.

That sounds horrible, hopefully you and her family can find some peace.

Indeed it is a sad day as my grandfather passed away today. Didn't feel like starting a new thread though.

Sigh. It's been a tough week around here. Sorry to hear this.

Yeah, all the threads around here didn't make me want to start a new one.

Sounds like a lot of these are tougher than my gramps going. He was 87 and ready to go.

Last night another full time faculty member passed away unexpectedly. For a full time faculty of under 100 these two deaths have been quite a shock. Dave Rant was a generous and friendly guy. He started as a high school social science teacher, moved on to get his J.D., spent decades as a lawyer, got his MBA and taught business and business law at two different colleges.

God bless, Dave.
