FOFC Crawl Comp #4: Spiggan Stalker
FOFC Crawl Comp #4: Spiggan Stalker
Stock up on your confusion potions it's time to try out the stalker class. You won't be wearing much armour but that's ok because you wouldn't be able to carry it anyway. Stealth and a silent knife in the darkness are your favoured tools. That and exploding confusion and poison potions. Race: Spiggan Class: Stalker God: Your choice Time: 2 weeks |

Off to a good start. I stabbed Jessica in the face and she never saw me coming.

<---Jessica experienced the 1-2 combo of poison/confusion explosions from my guy and quickly succumbed. Crazy Yluf did as well. I ran away from Terence cause he's always been a tough one to take out early, but I should probably go back and throw some confusion at him now.

Was curious so did go back and take him out with the help of confusion and water potion explosions.

I just saw a new version of the Temple-a pretty scene through a forest decked in fall colors winding around the various altars. Not sure if its new or not, but first time I've seen it. Worshipping Sif Muna now. (take that Xom!)

So how does throwing a potion work - I can't get them to break (maybe cause I am missing the target)?

Just for the record, potions of water work well also.

Kick things off - decent effort but I got swamped by Orcs in the Orcish mines making it impossible to chuck my potions or run away. As you can see I was about to teleport out but didn't get it off in time.
Code:
Should be able to do much better - I just need to be more careful about getting swamped. I did take out the Gnoll Fortress though and got the most pleasure after I'd test-drunk a potion of invisibility and could sneak through a band of sleeping orcs and kill them all in their beds. |

This guy was an odd conundrum, he found an artifact dagger, but it was antimagic...and I was getting through combat relying on an amulet of rage, which also ultimately caused his demise, the resultant slow-down and exhaustion made it impossible to outrun a wasp.

This guy is a lot more fun than the DsCk. I still died, but I felt more in control of dying. This time I pop down a stairwell and am right next to a wall. There is Nikola looking at me. I try to pop him with a poison bomb and then I'll go upstairs. He fires some lightning out of his ass that hits me, hits the wall, hits me, hits himself, hits me, dead. I knew better. I knew I had no elec resist, but still I tried the dumb move of "maybe I can kill him."
54101 Sprocket the Spry (level 14, -3/66 HPs) Began as a Spriggan Stalker on Sept 7, 2011. Was the Champion of Makhleb. Killed from afar by Nikola (16 damage) ... with a chain lightning ... on Level 15 of the Dungeon on Sept 8, 2011. The game lasted 04:10:43 (32374 turns).

Ooof Lonnie, that was a rough one. I've been very guilty of the "maybe I can kill him" mistake of late with my chaos knights, causing many of their deaths. Trying to be more cautious with this guy, but his unique ways of killing things tempts me too much to ignore at times. Last level I was on with my guy had a heavily guarded orc fort with the entrance to the Orcish Mines there. It was surrounded by a moat complete with three or so electric eels as guards. The orcs had two or three square "peninsulas" coming from the fort where they could stand and pick things off (i.e) me while they were protected by deep water.
Well water bombs (and a couple fireballs from a wand) work quite nicely on waterbound (and those close to them) I found out. And in the fort itself, the last thing to clear out were a priest and a wizard who were each in a one square walled off area with the stairs to the mines between them and deep water in front of them. A potion of confusion caused each to fall in the deep water and drown. Very sweet. ![]() My best find in that game so far has been a dagger of returning-that came in handy against the orcs and also a big room full of kobolds/big kobolds that I found right above the orc fort. Lots of potions of poison came from those bodies. ![]() Last edited by Thomkal : 09-08-2011 at 03:08 PM. |

Yep did it again posted about my current character followed by a death soon thereafter. But I went out smiling at least-I found my first ever bailey-the entrance had two deep water areas with nasty orc types in the few land spaces available-potions of confusion left and right and mega deaths and mega skill increases followed.
But then I got stupid-all the orcs had weapons of reaching, so didn't need to be next to me to hit me. I got past the initial orcs and saw treasure gleaming in a small room-I went into the room and an orc knight was there. I should have backed out of the room and used potions, but instead I went across to the treasure before throwing a potion-which was close enough to use his reaching weapon. He was poisoned but did not die from it before I died from his weapon. Like I said stupid, but man it was great seeing all those big orcs die from drowning. Code:

I definitely suffer from being used to your average CRPG and not having perma-death. I hang around longer than I should fighting or just getting one last hit in when the opponent is nearly dead and wind up dying. Need to learn to run away more.

This is the most fun (and most strategic) combo I've played so far. I cheated death at least a half a dozen times. Using the dig spell to create paths to outrun mobs of creatures, playing ring around the dungeon with an elelphant. Oh and this character hates imps.
Anyhow here is my first submission of hopefully many. 10114 Shadow VIII the Nimble (level 11, 0/51 HPs) Began as a Spriggan Stalker on Sept 8, 2011. Was a Believer of Sif Muna. Succumbed to a spiny frog's poison ... on Level 2 of the Lair of Beasts on Sept 9, 2011. The game lasted 04:09:35 (17340 turns).

Lesson: A Dire Elephant is not an Elephant. It may look like one, but pay attention to the names.
65610 Stabby the Spry (level 14, -2/66 HPs) Began as a Spriggan Stalker on Sept 8, 2011. Was the Champion of Kikubaaqudgha. Slain by a dire elephant (19 damage) ... on Level 8 of the Lair of Beasts on Sept 10, 2011. The game lasted 04:57:53 (40799 turns).

My latest run is at level 14 and my two best died at level 14 so I am taking it slow for a bit. I need to find something to take out the Hydras as there are quite a few this time and I haven't caught them sleeping yet.

I get my blokes to level 10 and then I get them killed. Last one I had I had huge hopes for - he had an artifact +5/+2 sling that turned the stones into ice, a +4/+2 dagger of venom and robes of magic resistance. I'd managed to accumulate about 20 potions of confusion and had some decent abilities (breathe fire). Buit I still got bloody killed. I think once I get down to about the 9th or 10th level of the dungeon I don't have the means to withstand the attacks of the tougher monsters. Eventually I get bored of running away and slinging them and then I get dead. Very frustrating. Seems like my guys are defined by the kit they find. Makes the game more varied, which is good, but makes it a bigger wrench when you lose someone with a great bunch of items. |

Dola. Special mention must go to how annoying it is to bump into the ghosts of your former selves as they normally bombard you with confusion bombs so you can't fight back while they resistant to them.

Yes you must adapt and evolve. Like the Troll Berserker, this guy is very strong in the beginning, but soon enough you run into things that are poison resistant. You have to find another way to confuse or sleep the enemy so you can stab them, because you suck at straight up melee.
A wand of Fire and a wand of Ice is nice to carry around. Also start learning another spell school that does damage. God choice is important. Makhleb gives you summons that can help take out tougher monsters. I also like Kiku as he gives you Necromancy tomes which you are good at and are already training with fulsome distillation. Then Pain, Vampiric Draining, and Dispel Undead become staples.

This! I have had about a third of my guys die to the ghosts. I am going to start running away from them from now on, becuase I can't seem to kill them. They are also going to suck when we switch characters because of their confusion bombs. |

My latest:
Code:
Was almost always on the run near the end there due to hunger and things I couldn't fight well like wraiths, bees, and more. Had lots of neat spells from Kiku that would have come in handy if I had enough food to use them, but alas not to be. This is not my highest score-came up just a few points short. |

Thomkal, that's about the point at which I have managed to die most of the time (except when I meet a spriggan stalker ghost of one of my previous characters).
I didn't have any trouble with the killer bees becuase they are susceptible to poison and their corpses turns into a potions of poison. The bee hive on level 1 or 2 of the lair was very easy to clear out (drag a couple of bees out, kill em with poison, get a couple more potions of poison, rinse repeat). |

Yep,
Looks like people lost interest. I usually do after I binge a while myself. That was eight straight weeks of Crawl. I'll go again if someone wants to post a new combo.

We probably need a break-the Angband comp we had a while back lasted about as long. Maybe come back in a couple months or whenever with a "Player's Choice" comp-pick whatever character you want to play-the one you enjoy the most and/or you think you can get the furthest in the game with.
