Sports Nostalgia of the 90s

Grantland had an interesting article listing the top 9 things for sports obsessed kids in the 90s.

1. Sports Illustrated for Kids
2. NBA Inside Stuff
3. D2: The Mighty Ducks
4. Ken Griffey Jr.
5. The naive belief that you had the only Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card
6. Matt Christopher books
7. Space Jam
8. Jordan Highlight VHS box sets
9. MTV Rock 'N' Jock Basketball (Dan Cortese, I SEE you).
10. Starter jackets

Only two items didn't resonate with me, but I consider this a pretty good list.

I would say 1,2,5 (although I knew plenty of other people with that card. But that card signaled you were serious about collecting,6,7,8,9,10.

I had no idea what was meant by starter jackets until I clicked the link and I actually had the White Sox version of it. I really had no idea that style was that popular.

Oh man, Starter jackets were huge when I was in high school and that was the mid to late 80s. I had a Red Sox, Royals, White New York Yankees and Twins jackets.

EDIT: Forgot I had a Charlotte Hornets one as well.

EDIT: Wait, also had a Celtics one. Man this memory of mine is working more like punch cards instead of RAM.

1. I never read Sports Illustrated for Kids, but I thought it was a nice concept.
2. Loved NBA Inside Stuff.
3. Seriously? D2? D2 wasn't bad, but I thought the original movie was far better.
4. Agreed.
5. Agreed.
6. Agreed. My favorite Matt Christopher book was called something like "The Kid Who Only Hit Homers."
7. Eh, not a huge fan of Space Jam.
8. Not really.
9. Rarely watched MTV.
10. I wasn't allowed to have a Starter jacket because my mom told me that people were getting robbed and shot at over their Starter jackets. Of course, I lived in New Orleans where people got robbed and shot at over the aisle seat in a church pew, so that really didn't mean a whole lot.

Loved Starter jackets and the Mighty Ducks movies, though I agree the original was better.

I thought SI for Kids was trite and nowhere near as good as the adult version.

Oh man, Junior's cards were treated like gold bullions. I still have several of them in card cases. I also still have a Griffey Mariners jersey in my closet. Here is me sportin Mariners blue in the 90s. It was pretty easy to pull off since 1) Griffey was just a loveable beast and 2) the Oakland A's were the definition of horrendous at the time.

I don't remember Starter jackets, but I did have some Parkas.

For some reason, I am imagining a kid wearing a monocle and holding a cup of tea.

What happened to people getting killed over Air Jordans? (tho we did have that entry for Raiders Starter Jackets- and, really, why Raiders?!?)

Loved my Hornets Starter jacket. Then Jordan retired, Shinn and Bass bailed on Charlotte, and I forgot the NBA existed.

I loved my NY Rangers starter jacket. But what I also loved was the pullover jackets that were out around the same time. They were lighter, more of a windbreaker, but they were awesome. Had big team logos on the shoulders I believe. Can't remember who made them, maybe something like Apex?

Anyway, my mom wouldn't let me get one because she thought it was stupid to be pulling a jacket over your head. No, you're stupid, Mom.

I was the man at school when I got my Redskins starter jacket.

I still have a Duke pull over Starter coat hanging in the closet.

I still have my Cowboys starter jacket that I bought in 8th grade (1991?). The wife won't let me wear it, though.

I don't think they ever made a UTEP starter jacket, sadly...
