Metallica.
Megadeth a close 2nd followed by Anthrax. I like a few songs by Slayer but never could really get into them. |

gotta be Metallica as long as it is everything prior to the black album. Anthrax would be a close second

All I'll say is this, there are more influential heavy metal bands, but I would likely rank them the best. Maybe it happened back in the day as well for other bands, but Metallica is the only one I know that gets Mandatory Metallica Mondays status and gets it from more than one station.

Metallic, then Megadeth, then a pretty good drop off to Anthrax. I can take Slayer or leave them honestly.

34 votes and 33 for Metallica. I figured they would be the winner but not like this. I guess the better question would have been, after Metallica who would you take?

Metallica. Just too much great music from years ago to go without.
Slayer is an easy #2 for me & more likely to be listened to before Metallica on a given day (not withstanding radio since Slayer isnt your usual radio band). Does this poll have anything to do with a TV show by any chance? ![]() |

I have to go with Metallica, too. I thought Death Magnetic was a good album, but not great. It was almost too much of a return to form - many of the songs were basically rewrites of older songs, put in the same order as the songs they copied from their pre-Black Album records. And my favorite song on the album, All Nightmare Long, is basically a thrash rewrite of Enter Sandman. But I thought Rick Rubin did a nice job of even pulling that out of them, as it was miles better than anything they've done for 15-20 years.
Have to put Megadeth next. Their work in the past decade or so has been really strong. I didn't listen to them in the 90s - I simply couldn't take the attempt to match Metallica's commercial success - but Mustaine's actually had a longer run of high quality metal than Metallica, if not hitting the peaks that Metallica did. Third for me is Slayer, just because the old stuff holds up so well. I was never a huge Slayer fan, and I still hate the ridiculous, atonal guitar solos they insist on putting on their albums - I think my 7 year old daughter could do better - but they're a hugely influential band with some great stuff. I have to put Anthrax last for two reasons. One, they only had one really great album from top to bottom, Among the Living. Anthrax's problem has always been consistency. They are to metal what Cheap Trick is to rock/pop - the band was always better in theory than the results on record. And like Cheap Trick, they kinda undermined themselves by not being serious enough. When I think of Anthrax, I think of a NY party band, not a serious metal band. That kinda changed when John Bush joined the band, but now Belladonna's back, and the first song they write is about zombies. And true to form, the new album is half good, half meh.

No Trout option for those of us that hate metal? What kind of an FOFC poll is this?

This is still no excuse for the lack of a trout option.

Trout isn't metal enough.
The metal version of trout is Manowar.

Yup. I figured it was referring to Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and OU, since that will be the entire conference soon...
