technical question : internet connection

today i hooked up a new computer and i got it all running (cept for FOF but thats another thread). well i still have my old comp and it has FOF up and running fine and other "files" that i would like to keep and thought i would just switch the cable over to old comp and play fof and other stuff on that computer. but when i moved the cable back over to the old comp for some reason im not getting any connection to it. its working fine on my new computer but not the old one. anyone have any idea why its doing this and any tips on how to fix it?

Yeah, likely your new CPU's mac address is in your router's (or modem) routing table for that port and doesn't know where to send the packets to for your old cpu (which has its own mac address).

Easy fix. Any of these should fix your problem (in order of ease/preference)
1. Move the wire on to a different port on your router when using the old cpu
2. Disable/enable your old cpu's network interface to force the router to identify it.
3. Or just reboot your router if all else fails.

You didn't say you have a router so I'll assume you don't. Anytime you move the connection from the cable modem to a new device you usually need to power cycle (reboot) the modem. You can do this one of two ways, either unplug the power to the modem for a couple seconds, or if you really want to reset the modem there should be a small hole in the back of the modem that you can stick a pen in and reset it. If you have a cable modem gateway (modem/router combo) don't reset it unless you want to set it back to default settings and set up your network from scratch again.

omg i feel so freaking retarded. theres 3 slots for the cable into my old comp, i tried the top 2 last time, but the 3rd one was kinda hard to see below my monitor cable and thats the one thats my internet. feel so stupid, but i did change my modem slots just to be safe. bright side now i dont have to move my FOF over to new computer and can keep all my "special files"

thanks for the help
