The 2011-12 Winter Storm Thread

Poor East Coasters, some places could see over a foot of snow this weekend. Crazy how early its' going to begin.

I am shocked that I might see snow this early. It feels good to be home.

AH HATE WINTER! I ESPECIALLY hate winters that start before Halloween.. right now, we're on the good side of the 10-15/2-4 line, let's hope it stays low.

Is there ever a good day to drive through springfield? But in this case, no. Tommorrow's not the day.

Late Oct./early Nov. was always a good time for snow back in high school during Cross Country season. It's when the State Finals happened.

That dark purple running through NY. Yeah, that's where I live.

Fuck the snow! I've got a play to work on and I'm not about to cancel.

Yeah...and I am there too...it's my cheerful sunny disposition that keeps it away. It's the only reason I can explain why it dumped last year every time I was out of town

You say this like you're not a believer...but you do understand that due to the melting of the polar ice releasing more moisture into the atmosphere and the changes in weather patterns that brings, that's exactly what this is.

I'm smack dab in between Trenton and Philly and it started snowing here a good 6 hours earlier than forecast. It's heavy and it's piling up. I think this one could turn out to be pretty major. My only hope is that there isn't a sustained problem with outages but the branches are already coming down.

Because it's so wet and the flakes are large it looks terrible here. It's only now starting to stick to the roads, but if it snows like this for the next twelve hours we'll easily break a foot.

I would be one of those. So many trees down everywhere they say it might be days before we have power back. This snow pretty much finished off every tree in the neighborhood that was damaged by the hurricane this summer

This is what came crashing down literally right over my head at about 2pm yesterday. The tree is blocking the window which is exactly where I was sitting at the time. And this is after my neighbor and I drug it back about 2-3 feet. We abandoned removal because A) It was heavy and B) As we were doing it we saw 3 other large branches come crashing down around us. Not a winter wonderland.

Massachusetts looks like a bomb went off. This is far crazier than the hurricane damage and some people in town had no power for a week after that. Driving through town trees are everywhere, power lines are down all over the place. Every other street is closed to detours from the storm.

National grid is saying four days before the area gets power back. This really is going to make a mess for the kids tomorrow night. You can't trick or treat without any power anywhere. Just not safe at all. So we might end up taking the kids to the closest town with power for halloween.

Wow, I haven't even gone outside. Looking out my window I'd never have guessed it's that bad.

How's the NYC/CT area, anyone?

I don't have any idea, but I'd guess anywhere from 9-12". It snowed like hell for a couple of hours before anything stuck and it was melting as it fell. I don't think there was ever more than five or six inches on the ground, but we definitely got more snow than that.

Places that saw the morning sun today were completely free of snow by 2 pm. Crazy storm.

edit: Weather.com has New Windsor at 11.5"

Do we have any Alaska members? That storm looks amazing- it looks like a hurricane but with snow. Pressure is around 28.00 inches and 80 mph sustained winds. That's just nuts to think about it with so little heat but still having so much energy

I don't think they are, IIRC they are usually out towards the start of the year. I was just down by the locks yesterday and saw several of them docked.

(Finally found this thread. No one had really had winter since that quick little blast in November and that snowstorm in the plains in mid December)

WINTER, I HATE YOU!
