Question for XBox 360 owners.
we are getting one for our kids for x-mas this year with the Kinect.
What memory cards or external memory should we also get for it or is it needed? Do we need a 3rd controller? Are their any/many games that are more than 2 players that use the Kinect system for younger kids (ages 7 and 3 year old twins)? Thanks |

Depends which Xbobx 360 you're getting. The 4GB one might not have enough memory for everything you want to do. If you buy the 250 GB, you're more than set. Two controllers should be enough, though depends on how many people want to play. I don't have a Kinect, so I can't answer that.

Hard drive is a must IMO. FWIW, I think we've got an old 60 GB drive and there's still between 10G and 15G space available even after several years of heavy use by two players (meaning two sets of saved games). Note here that it's used strictly for gaming, no d'loaded/saved movies or music, not even games installed to the hard drive to save loading times, etc.
Likely number of players totally dictates the number of controllers needed. I think we've had more than two gamers in the house at the same maybe 5 times in 10 years, certainly nothing worth buying a third controller over. YMMV. No clue on Kinect, has never interested me in the slightest.

You will want the HD and M$ charges above and beyond for it. But I have 4GB and it holds squat and I am looking at buying the HD just because I need and want it. The kinect is a fun system and if you buy kinect based games you won't need additional controllers..2 is pretty safe at my house.

Yeah, if it's only the 4GB you will want a HD.
Also, if you have a HD TV, you can pick up a HDMI cord on the cheap.

My 5 year-old plays Kinectimals and Kinect Adventures, and I don't believe that either allows for 3 players at one time. Since the 'playing field' needed to use Kinect is as large as it is, I am not sure it is designed to handle input from a 3rd source.

I have a 4GB USB key that I use for my Xbox Live profile to transport between our 2 Xbox Consoles. It would actually be enough to hold my son's games, since he doesn't download anything.
Personally I have a 250GB HD on my Xbox and about 160GB of that is currently in use. I download tons of DLC and songs for Rock Band so a hard drive wasn't even an option for me, it was mandatory. |

Go with the bigger hard drive. You'll want to install games as often as you can and the 4gb just doesn't give you enough space.

Reviving this thread
We got our kids (7 and 5) the Xbox bundle w/ Kinect for Christmas. 4GB model. After only a few days, realizing I need to get additional storage, so looking at this: Amazon.com: 60GB Hard Drive for Xbox 360 (Generic): Video Games It's being used almost exclusively by the kids at this point. I'll probably eventually buy NHL12 for myself, and maybe join Live if/when I actually become decent at playing. Is 60GB going to be enough? Sounds like it will for what we are using it for - mainly profiles and saving progress.

you will have to pop that out of the case and either get a hdd sleeve for it, or be extremely careful to place it in the unit.

Amazon.com: Xbox 360 250GB HardDrive - Xbox Slim Only: Video Games
This is the one you need, the other is for an old school xbox....you can make it work but it will be a pain |

So no knockoff brand will work, I have to go with the MS version?

I think they can ban your console for a knockoff.

Using anything but what Microsoft sells is kind of a pain, but it's doable. Frankly, especially if it's for the kids, you're almost better off sticking with the official one - if nothing else, it comes with a free download of Lego Star Wars III. |
