Cincinnati Panorama
I found this fascinating - I heard a discussion on NPR about it today -a daguerrotype panorama was taken from a hill opposite Cincinnati in 1848, producing a large picture from multiple plates. A few years ago a ton of work was done to digitize the whole thing, as well as give you the ability to zoom in to an amazing degree and see all the little historical details.
Really amazing to think you can get this close of a view to what life was like in 1848. F & P Daguerreotype, The Cincinnati Panorama of 1848 |

Living here certainly has given me an appreciation for the history here. It's a really cool picture. Thanks.

That's very interesting. We only go up to the Revolution in class, but my class is poised to finish the book (Civil War) so this may get used in class. Hard for kids to visualize history of the 1800s without pictures.
Considering I live in the triangle between Indy, Louisville, and Cincy, Cincinnati is the city I need to explore more. Don't get over there near as much as I do to the other two. Last edited by ColtCrazy : 02-18-2012 at 09:22 AM. |

What struck me was all the small factories and shops making all kinds of stuff needed for transport, trade, and everything else - definitely different from today - that's all been moved to bigger factories if it's there at all.

I wouldn't bother. Downtown Cincinnati is mostly a shithole now...

Yea, I'm far from an expert on Cinci but when I go to Reds games I usually stay around the river. More often then not I actually go over to the Newport side for a hotel and nightlife.

Shame. Makes me appreciate how much Indianapolis has done to rejuvenate the downtown area. Louisville is trying. I haven't really been to downtown Cincy since I went to the Oktoberfest in 2009. |

Cincy is trying to put money in and rejuvenate it. The biggest problem has been a lot of wrangling about what should be done. The Banks project was supposed to compete with Newport, but it's been a disaster. It should have been done a year after Paul Brown was done, but only now are they getting it up and running.
Newport is still my preference for going out.

This. Me and my wife won't even step foot in Cincinnati unless it's necessary anymore.

That is an awesome link.
It would be cool if someone went out there today and took the same panoramic and did a 'then and now' type comparison.
