PC controller
For playing sports games on the PC, I'm looking at getting a console style controller. Any recommendations? Not looking for anything fancy. Fairly cheap will do just fine.

The only one I would recommend is the XBox 360 controller, the wired one will run around $34 or so. Most games that would use a controller have native support for the 360 pad, while any other controller would be hit or miss (though there is software you can use to make a different pad work if it's not supported).

Actually looks like they can be found new on Amazon for $28 if you chose white one.

I recommend the wired 360 controller as well. Very easy to set up and most are familiar with it.

FWIW I just came to the same conclusion when I was looking for something to play NBA2k12 with. Every review I read said the Xbox wired controller had better compatibility and was much sturdier than the other options out there

If you have a 360, you can just get the wireless adapter for around $20

Compatibility is the biggest reason that I would recommend not getting anything other than the 360 controller (though it's probably also the best pad out there too). If it's a game that was also released on 360 you should be able to plug it in and it will just work, detected and with keys set up properly. The only time this wasn't the case for me was with Assassin's Creed 1 & 2 not properly detecting the wireless 360 controller, and even then I just needed to copy a driver file into the games directory. The 360 pad might cost a bit more than the other options, but the hassle you're probably going to avoid is probably worth it. |
