FOFC Crawl Comp #6-Merfolk Assassin
Okay gang here's the new Crawl Comp. Please let me know if you are participating. Deadline will be the last day of the month at midnight, or like this last time, if that's a weekend, I'll extend it till Sunday at midnight. If you'd like it to last longer just speak up-I have no problem with that if enough want to do it. Here's the link to the game again if you don't have it.
Downloads « Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup I much prefer the graphical version. I would recommend doing a search for Crawl Comp in this forum and read through the first comp for sure and maybe the second as a lot of good advice and helpful tips were given there. You can also check out the link to the Tavern on the downloads page-its a forum with a ton of good info/help. Don't be shy if you haven't played before-the game comes with a tutorial mode you can try first-and as you'll see if you read the first comp, many of us will help you if you need it here. And a complete newcomer won one of the comps, so everyone has a shot of winning. We'll go with High Score-you can post your morgue dumps here (you may need to kill your current character at the end to get a dump-can't remember if we found a workaround for that or not). Make sure you use code tags for sure and spoilers tag if you want as the dumps are quite large. As with the first comps, please post regularly with your experiences-funny/embarrassing/annoying deaths-great finds, last second saves, ideas on how to best play the character, etc. May the best killer....er I mean best player win! Good luck! |

Wavecreeper the first gets an good find on level one when he finds 7 curare needles to add to his starting 3, giving him 10. And then finds some more poisoned needles on level one...he's sure to find a quick death now. Also found silver and regular sling bullets, a lot of stones...and then a glowing sling! Yep sure to die soon...
And it nearly comes true as a gnoll I couldn't escape from nearly did me in with a halberd. Still at least one left on level two...great. Last edited by Thomkal : 07-10-2012 at 02:17 PM. |

yessssss
Even though I play this class/race combo all the time, I suck at it, and don't have much to offer. It's a tough combo, because it's ostensibly still a melee fighter, but isn't really strong enough to go up against anything all that powerful. In the early going your sneaking is going to suck too, so it's hard to use effectively. I find that throwing comes into play a lot in the early game, if you can pick up a good set of darts, that can make things a lot easier, and allow you to do some damage to opponents before they get up close. Likewise, you start with a blowgun and some poisoned needles, which can turn the tide of important battles, but your blowgun takes some time to be switched out with your melee weapon, and the needles will often be destroyed after use, so using your blowgun can require some thought and management as well.

That level also contained Ijyb, who I beat thanks to my curare needles and Jessica who I avoided since she was in the middle of an open large room. I decided to avoid that part of the level entirely and made my way to the third level of the dungeon as a 4th level assassin with no idea what any of the items he's found are since I've found few scrolls and no duplicates.

Futile I is heading down to the third floor of the dungeon, having had a couple of extremely close calls on floor two. While traversing floor two, he came across a pack of gnolls at a distance. Luckily, he was able to poison all five of them before they got to him, but he barely survived the encounter. A couple of rooms to his east, he encountered a viper and worm that nearly ended his life as well.
All things considered, he is alive and well heading down to the third floor. He is at character level 4 (75% to 5) is carrying a +2, +3 dagger, a wooden buckler, a robe and a cloak. He has 6 poisoned needles and 3 curare needles left in his stock. Also in the inventory are (1) potion of agility, (2) scrolls of magic mapping, (1) scroll of fear, (2) scrolls of teleport.

... and he blindly walks into an ogre, who quickly smashes him into the cold dungeon floor.
Futile I scores a paltry 216.

I think you do get to start with at least a +2/+2 dagger every time, which is worth something.

Well, I'm already having better luck with this combo compared to the Octopod.
Still on the first level and found a Ring of Sustenance, a +2 Ring of Evasion, a +2,+3 Dwarven dagger to go with the +3,+2 starting dagger(I found a scroll of Enchant Weapon I, that's why it's +3, +2)...hopefully my luck continues for a lot longer than the Octopod ones did. With the Octopod, I got to the 3rd level twice, and the highest score I had with him was around 350 or so. |

Okawuru is probably the best choice-gives gifts of weapons, armor, and ammo once your piety is high and is very easy to worship-sacrifice fresh kills, and if you get allies somehow, don't hit them with any weapon/harmful spell. Trog is the backup choice-the berserk and Brothers in Arms come in handy, and he gifts weapons and ammo, but they tend to be two handed and other high damage weapons that Assassins likely wouldn't use.

I've already chosen Trog.....if I get far enough, I may just have to switch to Okawuru.
So far so good though, here is a character file dump.
Spoiler
I think finding the 2 rings, and the dagger has helped early on, and then being able to use Trog's Beserker a couple of times when going up against a large group of monsters has helped out. Then killing the centaur with the bow of flame has made a big difference, since I have a large supply of arrows. With that, I've been able to save a lot of poison needles and use them and the curare tipped needles when absolutely necessary for killing the tougher named monsters or the Orc Priests. My first try Fishin Chips, died rather unceremoniously on the second level after being bit by an adder and frantically drinking potions, before finally succumbing to poison, unable to correctly guess which of his potions was healing.

My first attempt. Not terrible. Found enough food. I was cautiouus at first using the needles. BUt really just stormed through like always with my dagger. I definitely used armor wherever I found it (ring mail, leather, shield)
I found a dagger of draining early on. Was GREAT! But I found adder twins that poisoned me. I killed them but well, that poison thing. YOu'd think assassins had antidote with them all the time or were immune...

Trout managed to clear out the sewers on level 3, but pretty much from then on he was on the run, and finally fell to exploding spores on dungeon level 11, well beyond where he should've been at level 7, but monsters beyond my skills kept chasing me deeper, until one finally caught me.

I guess I was someplace I didn't belong.
I think I was a little over confident when I went into the Shoals with this character, but I made it a heck of a lot further than I ever thought I would. Not sure if I'll be able to top this guy or not, especially when he got some great equipment/weapons right on the very first floor of the dungeon. It was quite a ride though, just wish I found better armor during the campaign, I might of lasted longer.

Great job Ozias, that one might stand up. I've not been to the Shoals myself, so hard to say if you were a good level for it. Reading the wiki it looks like you were well suited for it with your merfolk water form, evasion, and a little bit of magic resistance, but things might have been just too tough for your level. Good luck with the next one.

Well Wavecreeper the first has died. Was a frustrating experience towards the end because I never found a better weapon than my starting weapon and my stealth didn't seem to be of much help as I tried to sneak up on things and stab them-most woke up before I got to them.

the worse part was the potion of berserk rage I was carrying probably would have saved me-I hadn't ID'ed it and had already ID'ed curing and heal wounds, so I figured it was unlikely to be a potion that could help me at this point....thus violating my own rule about sipping potions whenever you are about to die. Nice job idiot.

Wavecreeper2 starts up and finds 3 daggers so far on level 1-one dwarven, one elven, one orcish. Threw two of them and killed a goblin and hobgoblin with each one. Then I kill a goblin carrying a runed dagger...and its cursed.
Find a short sword of protection (that nearly killed me with the kobold I took it from) so lets see if I can fight a little better now.Last edited by Thomkal : 07-11-2012 at 04:14 PM. |

Thom (and everyone)
Are you skipping parts of the early levels and descending as quickly as possible? I myself explore every bit of every level unless something scares me further down. But is it more successful to do that? |

I always try to explore every bit of a level-you never know what treasure you might be missing, plus the xp you get for exploring the whole level might be enough to have you go up a character level. If I find a mob I can't handle then I might have to avoid part of a level, and go down to the next, but then I will look for a staircase up that might get me to the unexplored part without alerting the mob I was trying to avoid. |

I am barely looking at the screen through level 1 really. Everything is pretty easy to storm through followed by a nice rest. There is the occasional random clump of monsters that catches me off guard but 1 is pretty idiotproof. As you say gets you lots of xp and lots and lots of stuff. There seems to be a random factor of stuff. They always seem to give you lots of a type of thing. EIther there is lots of food or lots of potions or lots of scrolls, etc. I like finding the food most of all really. |

What I thought was an easier character that I was making headway with was a lie. Man...that second level is just screwing me left and right. Centaurs throwing things. Named characters disappearing and fireballing and hitting me. All kinds of screwing. Up to 11 deaths already ;(

Use your needles as much as possible unless you're able to sneak up on a monster. That way you kill from a distance. I saved most of my needles for the "named" monsters though, like "Crazy Yulaf", "Dowan", "Jessica", etc., as the monsters on the first few levels you can pretty much have a go with the dagger you're given at the start. Also, I grab any arrows, darts, bolts, and stones I find while exploring, just so I will have some kind of ranged weapon. With the character above, I found a bow, but already had about 100 arrows when I found it, so I wasn't looking for arrows. I dumped the bolts afterwards, because I wasn't going to use 2 different ranged weapons from that category(crossbow or bow). Darts are throwing weapons, so I kept those and the stones you want a sling for, but you can throw them if you don't have a sling, but with a sling they do more damage. I also explore the complete level before moving on, press the "o" key on the keyboard for faster exploration, and it will tell you either "Done exploring" or "partly explored", if it's partly, then you either have to go down a flight of stair and the go back up a different flight to find the area you can't get to, or the opposite, up then down. Just don't go up if your on the very first level of the dungeon, or it's game over, unless you have the "Orb of Zot" with you. Also, pick up things that say, "runed", "glowing", or some other description other than plain weapon, so if it's a mace, leave it, but if it's a glowing mace, or runed mace, pick it up, and then when you've explored the level, use a scroll of "detect curse" if you have one, and it will inspect everything in your inventory, and if it's cursed, it will have a red colored box around the item. If it is, use a remove curse scroll, if it's not cursed, try the item, sometimes you will identify it immediately, other times you won't, and then you can either use an identify scroll on the item, or if it's a weapon, keep using it, and eventually you will be told what the item is. Now what I do is keep my best hand weapon, and discard the rest, except for daggers generally, as you can throw them for a ranged attack if needed, but I won't keep a let's say +1,+1 mace, if I have a +1,+2 sword. This keeps me from training 2 fighting categories, "Axes/flails" compared to "Long blades", even though the dagger is a "Short blade" category, so it keeps me from training 3 separate hand weapon categories. I try to train 1 or 2, depending on the weapons you find early in the game, as well as 1 ranged category, usually I end up in the "bow" not "crossbow" category. If you're unsure where this is at, in the game window, just above your inventory, you will see a sword and arrow in the shape of an X, click that, and then the "asterisk" key on your keyboard, now you will see all the categories I've mentioned, if the skill is lit up, and not darkened out, that is a skill you are training in. You can select a skill by clicking it, and you will see it lite up, so now you are also training that skill, clikc it once more, and now it glows brighter, and you should notice the " + " turn into an " * ", once it does, it means you putting more training into that then any other choice. You should also see the percentage change next to it, so to get good at something quickly, change it on this screen, and to really get good at one thing, darken out the rest of the skills, but I don't recommend doing this unless you find something of a great weapon very early in the game, but just remember to go back to the "Manage Skills" screen and change it back to training your other skills, or your character won't get better at them. I will usually turn off "unarmed combat" unless it's already greyed out, because I'm going to wear armor, and if I find a long sword that is better than my daggers, I will grey out "Short blade" and click on the "long blade", I will usually click the "Long Blade" once more to get the " * " next to it, and go thru a level or 2 to get my long blade skill up quicker, then turn it back to just the " + " for normal skill increase. A lot depends on your style of play, to get your stealth up quicker, get an * next to it, and you can even put another one next to stabbing if you want, then those 2 skills will train faster than the rest, just remember to go back and change it to normal. Only the skills that are highlighted will be trained while you're adventuring, but if you use let's say an axe at one point, then game will automatically highlight axe for you because you equipped the item. So try to remember to go to the Manage Skills screen any time you change weapons, or at least at the "end" of every level, so you don't train one skill so much higher than the rest, especially if you don't plan on using that skill over the long haul, ie., an axe over a short blade, don't train short blade if you've found a an axe and are always using it. I find the weapon of choice is usually decided for you, by the loot that's found, but for the "Merfolk" class, a polearm is the best weapon for them, so if you come across one, start using it, and put a * in the Manage skills screen next to it, and once you get up to 10 or so level with it, then just keep the + next to it. You will notice a "red" +4 next to that, and that is the aptitude of the class, and the +4 is one of the best gains in aptitude for a race, so take advantage of this. |

Dola for an example...
Here is a just a quick peak at my newest character...notice I'm still on the first level of the dungeon, yet I'm a 3rd level Merfolk? XL: is the level of your character, mine is 3 I already have 14 runed arrows, and managed to find 2 pieces of magical armor, and a runed orcish dagger, which I'll use to see if I can't identify it. This is what I mean by pick up everything that is "runed" or "glowing", both armor pieces were runed, and the stack of 5 scrolls I had turn out to be a "detect curse", so now I have 4, but nothing was cursed, so that's when I decided to try them on, you really don't want to find out after you've put it on to find out it's cursed, especially if it's a -2, or -3 type of armor. You will be stuck with it until you find a remove curse scroll, or an enchant armor scroll, but if you only have 3 more scrolls(like my character), it could mean you would waste those 3 hoping for a remove curse or enchant armor, which I don't like to take those kinds of chances, you tend to live longer. Well Sneaky Pete didn't get nearly as far as Slimey Jim.
I didn't realize it at the time, but when I found this artifact weapon ... the +2,+2 long sword of Twal (weapon) {freeze, MUT +Inv rPois rF+} ...I need to remember that MUT stands for mutation, and it reduced my HP total by 5, which hurt.

Well Wavecreeper2 is doing quite nicely in regards to weapons found. I now have a choice between four: a short sword of protection, short sword of draining, elven short sword of speed, and a dagger of pain. Which would you use if you had the choice here? He's also found a vampiric artifact mace that lets me See Invisible, as well as a couple nice rings-protection from magic and sustain abilities. Has a wand of cold and a wand of fireballs, which took out Grinder after my curare needles didn't work on him. They did work on Duvessa and Dowan though.

The protection or the speed...if I remember correctly, the draining one will drain, but also reduces the XP you get when killing them, as they aren't as powerful due to the draining. But if it's a hard battle, go for the drain, as it can let you survive by knocking the monster down a level or two.
The dagger I'm not sure about, as I can't recall how "pain" is in damage terms. Last edited by ozias : 07-12-2012 at 11:01 AM. |

Just narrowly made a deathdefying escape! On level 1 sandwiched betqween a rat and an adder, newt and hobgoblin.
They knocked me down to half hitpoints. So I got out my blogun fired it and poisoned the adder, another and hit the hobgoblin behind them all. Then hit the rat. At this point I was at 1 hit point. I poisoned the adder again. Then the rat, then switched to dagger. THe poison killed the adder. I killed the rat in 2 blows, the newt in one, then finished off the poisoned hobgoblin. Whew! |

Whoops...hahaha....
I go downstairs. Jessica is standing RIGHT next to me saying, "Hey baby. Come here and give me a kiss! My mustache will tickle you!" And I"m like....um...sorry wrong staircase and back up I go.... I find a new staircase. And again it's next to Jessica (on a second case. So I just give her some acupuncture and she dies in 4 turns. I look around and in a room nearby I find Terrence who is flexing his muscles and gritting his teeth and proclaiming his love for Jessica and charges me crying like a baby. I run like hell to those stairs again... |

Well you want Jessica right next to you so that actually was a good thing. Terrence on level 2 however? Not such a good thing. I'd try my curare needles on him if I was forced to fight him, but yeah looking for stairs to get away from him was the right move. |
