FOFC Greatest Band Challenge Part II -DRAFT OVER

Gentlemen,

Anyone can draft a team of top shelf rock stars. But can you mine gold from the next tier? Internet fame and indie cred await. Behold it's the-

FOFC GREATEST BAND CHALLENGE PART DEUX: DEEP CUTS

You know the rules. The REVISED categories look like this:

Main Categories

Lead Singer
Lead Guitarist
Bass Guitarist
Keys
Drummer
Other Instrument
Songwriter
Manager/Producer
Cover Song

Sub-Categories

Rock
HIP HOP/JAZZ/R&B
COUNTRY/METAL
Female
21st century
1990s
1980s
1970s
1960s & Earlier

9 categories and sub-categories. We did away with POP and LABEL. Deal with it.

ALSO TO DEAL WITH: FEMALE can no longer be used as a COVER SONG. You're gonna have a chick in your band. PLAN ACCORDINGLY

We also expanded the HIP HOP and COUNTRY categories. Should provide some much needed flexibility as the talent pool shrinks.

It should go without saying but every individual selected in the initial draft is OFF THE BOARD. That list will be posted below.

As always common courtesy and the honor system apply. Please PM the next drafter after your selection. There's no time limit but if you're going to be away for a while let us know. We are reasonable people.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Nah, I'm good with the turn. I'll most likely be drafting for funsies as much as competition this time around anyway. I need an opening act as wild as my headliner.

Okay, here we go...

1.1 Paul Simon, Songwriter, 1960s & Earlier

This was a real struggle with me. I hate having the first pick, so many directions to go. It's even harder when the best of the best are already off of the board.

Simon is considered one of the best songwriters ever, and he fits with the Cover Song I am angling for.

Go ahead and rip my pick now, lol.

No sir, I think it's a fine pick. Would have fit right in with the first draft which I think is a good litmus test.

Bridge Over Troubled Water is usually the first one that comes to mind for me, but Mrs. Robinson is terrific.

I actually have some idea who I want to go with next, but it's a long way before I go again. I wouldn't give much odds they will still be around when it comes back to me.

I got my first 4 picks bouncing around in my head and trying to decide the order on best odds of them being there. Arghhh.

Don't like the Nilson pick, not this early.

I just bumped this to get everyone excited that maybe the next pick was made.

Seriously, though, raise your hand if you thought it would be CF that would bring us to a grinding halt, lol. Yup? Yeah, no one.

Actually, hope he's not in a bad spot right now or nothing.

we're gonna give crimson till one o'clock est then brittrock's on the clock. i know i said no time limit but this is supposed to be fun and waiting indefinitely for someone who can't be contacted is the opposite of fun.

if/when crimson shows he can catch up immediately.

Chances are everyone's list is pretty diverse, so I doubt Crimson will lose a guy he had in mind.. But yeah, hopefully things are good on his end.

1.3 George Harrison, Songwriter, 60s and Earlier

This pick, thanks to the one-per-act rule, will take a few other great options off the table, but George is too good to pass up. The tougher question was whether to slide him in as my guitarist or my songwriter. In the end, his songs all sound so distinct that I decided he'd have a bigger impact at songwriter.

My favorite early George tune with the Beatles:

His songs are always interesting. Chords don't progress the same way. His musical arrangement always - ALWAYS - sets the emotional tenor that he's going for with his lyrics. Paul himself said that George's songwriting ability surpassed his and John's songwriting ability when George wrote "Something"; consider the source of that statement to understand how meaningful it is.

By the time he had left the Beatles, George had so much material built up (due to his approximate 2-song-per-album limit with the band) that he was able to put out the quadruple album All Things Must Pass in 1970, within months of the breakup. Then, in 1971, came what has to be considered one of the greatest concerts of all time, the Concert for Bangladesh. Here, George cemented himself on even footing with his bandmates once and for all.
